12:53 per your suggestion of putting a leather wheel on that machine, could it be wired to spin backwards? If you were going to do mobile sharpening, a trailer with lights overhead and a generator would be the way to go.
As someone who hasn’t watched the whole video.. you’re sharpening it wRoNg 😡😂
Thank you for so much info. Trying to learn this.
I think yours is the best video I’ve seen so far. Thanks very much for all the great tips and info. You’re going to do great.
What’s the income like? I’ve lived sharpening and the feeling of using a sharp knife since I was a child. I have a great career but am considering sharpening as a side hustle
What exactly did you have to do to mount the angle guide on the knife makers platen? Thanks.
Short and sweet....! (...like my women.)😂🤣
Great video. Would you consider making a video showing us your set up and actually going thru a knife sharpening process from start to finnish? I just bought a Kalamazoo 1"x42" Variable Position Belt Grinder and the knife makers platen. (How to install and use the hardware would be great for someone just starting.) Thanks again for all you do. Cheers.
Nice letter opener
Hi, here are some pointers from a guy who opened a sharpening business in 2011. ( I’d already been sharpening knives for 20 years by then.). FYI I sharpen all knives by hand on water stones. If this is the method that you like most stick to it. Eventually as your skill grows you will be the guy people want to bring their knives to because you do it by hand. Best of luck to you.
For that long a blade wouldn’t it be better on the harbor freight going away laying on back?
That Kalamazoo does edge leading?
I appreciate you sharing. I'd like to offer sharpening services to people in my neighborhood.
Go for it!
Great info! I follow a couple of those guys. I’m definitely going to try out that buck belt grinder. I need something to get all the chips out of a blade quickly and do finish sharpening on the Tormek.
You popped up on my feed. Nice review. Retired guy and been watching Cliff Curry. I as many others who wanted to get into sharpening to sharpen tools, kitchen knives or just general sharpening have purchased the Rikon 50-161VS. After seeing this video I have to say all your points are spot on. Thank You for an excellent post. Good luck and prosper with your new found business.. This machine is a cool piece of equipment for any small shop. Thank You
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the review.
Lots of good tips. Im a novice, trying to figure out how to sharpen my own knives for just my use. Would've made a lot more sense to just use a local sharpener. Lol.
So ironic! I just collaborated with a culinary store to do their sharpening for them as well. Great idea, especially for people who haven’t gotten their name out there quite yet.
Awesome
So sharp
Thanks for thoughtful ideas. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
That bad boy is sharp!
And Sharp it is!
Sounds like the key is alot of restaurant contracts
Most of my customers are not restaurants so far. Mostly just people who want their knives sharpened. I do sharpen for a couple of restaurants too.
Honed by jones sounds like a porn channel / name
Thank you,,, i really enjoyed your video on knife sharpening,,, i leaned alot,,,
I’m literally sitting in Santa Cruz right now with my new strop and emulsion compound. You seem like a great dude.
Thanks for all your information. I'm in the starting phase and I have a 1x30 and a ken onion. I have gotten somethings from Curry Custom I'd like to chat with you. I'll message you. Good luck
Hi Warren. I enjoy your enthusiasm for your new line of work. Your video shows you enjoy what you do now as well as using your past experience in massage to help you now. You've chosen some good sources for information. I look forward to seeing how you progress in your new business
Thanks!
do you then meet people at their appointment time to facilitate drop off, pick up, and payment?
Yes. For ex. - A woman is picking up her push reel mower at 4:30pm today. She made the appt online. I got a notification on phone and now I know. The scheduler is also synced to my iPhone/apple calendar.
Do you do mail in sharpening?
I do. I’ve had people mail me knives from both California and Texas so far.
Love the passion in this video. You seem like such a genuine person Mr.Jones! Its also so sweet how you talk about your partner.
Thanks for the kind words!
Great video . Can you do a demo knife sharpening video on the tsprof . Tyvm liked and sub
I don’t own a TSPROF. I prefer to use EdgePro guided sharpeners.
Sorry I thought you had one. I still learn from your videos . Ty
@@sixkings7831 - No worries.
Thanks for the shoutout! You'll be doing great work on these machines!
Thanks for the inspiration!
Great video 👍 Thanks
Thanks!
I have ordered the bucktool low speed for knife sharpening. You mentioned putting a 6 inch leather stropping wheel on that machine. Will i need an adapter for the 6 inch one curry sells? Why not the 8 inch?
No mod needed other than taking off the cover that comes stock. As soon as I received the 6 inch wheel I thought “Darn. Shoulda ordered the 8.” It’ll work even better I’m sure.
Great review, and nice sharpening setup. Looking forward to that longevity review!
Me too!
Good advice 1x30 is a great way to start but having options from other gear is great to add over time.
Very true!
Great advice.
Thanks!
Thanks for the video, I think it's great that the community helps each other out.
Thanks for the video. Thumbs up!👍
So could you sharpen edge trailing with this machine?
Steven sharpens said in his video that he ordered the machine edge trailing straight from the company.
I wonder if you could put a 2 in drive wheel on it to run 2 by 42 belts?
Don’t know. I’d probably just get a 2x42.
Wow! Never thought that angle guide would fit in there! Nice!
Nice, I am trying to decide between this or a Viel
I’m currently uploading a full review of the Kalamazoo
You adjust the tracking by slightly twisting the upper wheel support until the belt center's before you tighten the knob. th-cam.com/video/fE-_KJfFDKI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DyJ9_JetcrGmyU2C
Yep. That’s how I do it.
Did you slap a wheel on the BT 1x42?
Yes. The BT is a 1x30 tho. Ordered a 6 inch leather wheel from curry custom cutlery. Works great. It’s all I use for stropping now.
Please tell us about your need or desire to access the pulley wheels? BTW, good preview!
Thanks! When modifying the bolster of a knife or in various other sharpening situations sometimes it’s nice to have access to the wheel.
I am thinking of starting a sharpening business on the side and more in the future. Thanks for the insights.
No worries. Hope it helped some.
Great video! You and I are in the same boat working to get to full time. I need to look into the guild.
Good luck to you!
Very straight forward video! I am just sharpening my own knives and friends/co-worker’s knives right now. Thinkin’ about only doing this as a side hustle. The info you provided and especially what you would do if you started again was very insightful! I’m an avid Work Sharp fan but realize that there is so much more out there. Now to decide… stay with a guided system like the WSProPA or add a BuckTool machine to the inventory. Decisions, decisions! haha! Stay sharp! Roy- KB4ROY
Good luck with whatever you decide!
There absolutely is a market for waterstones and high precision sharpening. It honestly just depends on your local market. I know a few guys that mainly do waterstones sharpening and they make a killing. But nobody cares how you sharpen a 10 dollar knife from Walmart. And that’s the kind of knife most people have.
I agree about the whetstone sharpening. I’m just not in a good location for that.
