One Foot in Front of the Other NZ
New Zealand
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ส.ค. 2018
We are passionate about tramping (hiking) and travel. My videos show some of the great tramping (hiking) New Zealand has to offer and some of our adventures overseas.
We use videos when researching our own trips, especially for New Zealand's lesser known tracks. For this reason, there are generally two versions of my videos. There is the 1/2/3 Minute on the XX Track series which give a quick overview of a track or trip. Then, there are the longer videos (I try to keep these to 5-10 minutes) which show maps , have come commentary and show the track/trip in more detail. I'm always happy to answer questions via the comments.
In the coming months we will be walking the Larapinta in Australia, and in 2024 the Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT), a 2000km thru-hike in the US. Of course, there will be a video record of our adventures to enjoy.

Here are the first 3 days of our trip in Glacier National Park. We did 7 days of the Continental Divide Trail as a prelude to the Pacific Northwest Trail. These are being edited on the go, so are more basic than my usual videos. They give a taste of what it’s like, so enjoy.
Last Packing for Pacific Northwest Trail

Houston
มุมมอง 585 หลายเดือนก่อน
Those following along may wonder what we’re doing in Houston when we’re supposed to be walking the PNT. To get to the start of the trail in Glacier National Park, we originally planned to take the direct AirNZ flight to Chicago, spend a few days exploring the city, then jump on the Empire Builder train to East Glacier, a 30 hour ride. We’re still doing all that, but when AirNZ cut 5he direct fl...

On New Year’s Eve, we set off from Makarora with 9 days of food in our packs to explore the Young and Wilkin Valleys. The day before, we had driven two cars up the Matukituki Valley. We intended to head into Mt Aspiring National Park at Makarora, go up the Young Valley, over Gillespie Pass, visit Lake Crucible and then go up the South Branch of the Wilkin River. We had never been up the South B...
Shedding Pack Weight: Clothes
มุมมอง 1986 หลายเดือนก่อน
Three years ago, we were hefting pretty heavy packs. The last straw for big packs was a five day trip on the Hollyford Track. Despite being a group of 12 (meaning food, cooking equipment and other communal gear was spread out), our packs were huge and heavy! We realised that we had to make changes or we were never going to be able to realise our dream of completing the 2000km Pacific Northwest ...

มุมมอง 4376 หลายเดือนก่อน
We did the Paparoa Great Walk as part of our preparation for the 2000km Pacific Northwest Trail (PNT) in 2024. Great Walks make for good training trips because the surface is similar to what we'll often walk on in the USA. We struck the most fabulous weather for our 3 days/2 nights on the track. We started from Smoke-ho Carpark in Blackball and had our car relocated to the Punakaiki end while w...

Larapinta End to End Episode 3 Ghost Gum to Counts Point
Have done the Milford before and looking into going over the Dore Pass.
It’s one of our favourite passes. A much more interesting way to access the Milford
Off to do the track tomorrow Thanks for the video
Good luck! It’s a fun track. We did it in October too. I just recommend leaving the car park earlier than 5:45pm!
0:32 Did you see how that car is tailgating that Semi ? ..........That's insane , catching all its rocks .
First
I think it was November
Great video! What time of year were you there?
Go cuz
Brilliant movie
Yep, find it frustrating when you are on the coast and track disappears and no markers. It is a rain forest after all. Heading to mid Styk and back hunting soon
Exciting! Looking forward to following your adventure. All the best.
Awesome, thank you!
Amazing trip, and nice videography. I’ve got this on my to do list this summer hopefully.
Great luck Guys.....will be following avidly.
Have a great time! Can’t wait for the updates!
Have an AAAAAWWWWESOOME time! Look forward to hearing reports from the field.
❤❤
Awesome walk and vid Chrs
Very beautiful 😍❤️
Good on you for turning around. Rabbit Pass is certainly not everyone's bag. I would be the same. The drop off into the Matukituki side is apparently just as bad. It is definitely not a walk of shame to turn back!! I used to live in Makarora and the Wilkin holds a special place. Top Forks is one of my favourite spots. Nice to see it again. Thanks for the vid.👍
Great Video, well beyond my ability, thanks for sharing
Excellent......Keep on rolling.....❤️🌎😎
Always!
Nice video, thanks for sharing. May I ask what inspired you to start a channel?
Thanks. I have a few reasons. I enjoy creating movies of the fun we have in the outdoors four our own memories and record, especially with our kids and other family I finally got them to the point that I felt they were good enough to share with the wider world. We are also pretty experienced hikers and have done some cool tramps and wanted to share that knowledge with others. Finally, as we embark on our thru-hike of the Pacific Northwest Trail in the USA, we wanted a place to share this adventure with friends, family and other interested people. We've also created a website to go with it. (onefootinfrontoftheother.nz) The as-we-go videos will be different as we hike the PNT and travel in South America - edited on an iPad using iMovie instead of Final Cut Pro, but I'll do proper edited ones next year when we return home. Not a short answer, sorry but you asked!
Thank you for sharing. I plan to do this one day!
Beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. 👍2
Good calls. Definitely reduce the undies to 2 pairs. Good to see you got a Montbell windshirt. I'm looking at getting one of those Macpac alpha tops as I've heard very good stuff about them. I did a 6 day winter trip recently into Mungo Hut (with 2 days track work en route) and carried 11kg all up. My base weight was 7kg and I added 3kg of food and a gas canister, a 400g DCF tarp and PLB as party gear plus I had the secateurs for the track work. I carried my ice-axe in my hand.
The alpha tops are great - so light. My brain is currently struggling with the 'but this is an 85 day tramping trip!'
Absolutely!
It can be really difficult as ‘that’s my favourite jacket, I’ve got to take that’ 😆
It would be interesting to see your lighter pack spreadsheet, and see what your overall gear weight is. Like you I love Cactus stuff and would like to support NZ brands as I have done for years (I'm from Dunedin), but I get the impression we are very behind in the development of the ultralight philosophy in NZ. I am getting older and my body isn't as limber as 20 years ago, but I still want to go tramping, so over the last few years I have gradually forked out quite a bit of money to swop out my tent, sleeping bag and sleeping mat to lighter and more modern versions. I have also pared down the clothing and cooking kit. I took the plunge and bought a Hyperlite Mountain Gear pack a few months ago, and it is a dream to carry! Some gear is a really expensive outlay, but if you think of the money you are spending travelling to the USA and walking for several weeks, I personally think its worth it to spend the money on quality light gear that you will hopefully use for years to come. Check out Lauren Roerick's channel- she is a Canadian woman who has done multiple thru hikes including the Te Araroa and seems to manage with a fairly minimal amount of gear. Thanks for your content, and good luck with your trip!
Totally agree that lightweight is behind here. We have done the same with gear over the last couple of years. We went from a 3kg tent to 1.3kg and now to 550g. I put a post on our website about our pack/sleep/tent choices which I can't link on the FB page. Thanks, I''ll check out that channel too. I will share the lighterpack pies but I have had to redo them as I mucked things up and have to start again.
@@onefootinfrontoftheothernz Aha I had a look at your website and you have obviously been through a similar process of gear research and lightening the load to me! I love my old Macpac Ascent pack from the year 2000 (although terrible for water bottles) and Minaret tent and used to carry it solo with a digital SLR camera!! I hope the Durston dyneema tent and all the rest of the gear works out well for you. Love the videos, thanks.
Another fantastic vid. Thanks so much for sharing. Heading off the do the Paparoa this coming weekend so this is particularly timely! Can I ask about the carry method for the Canon camera on the hip belt (sorry I don't know your names). In fact, a gear review video would be great from you guys as your kit looks very dialled. Cheers, Scott
Hi - we both use Capture Clips and it just differs where we mount them. Matt put his on the hip belt - by cutting a slit to get it through - because his shoulder strap was too wide to get it around. Capture clips are really the way to go. I did worry about the camera on his hip when it got a bit scambly though! If the weather's good, don't miss Croseus Knob. We wanted to do the Pike sidetrip too but the track wasn't open when we did it last year.
Would have liked more video footage of your Dore Pass effort - did it myself back in the early 1980s, and it was no doddle!
There is a video on my channel that is only the Dore Pass section. This has more on that section. I try and keep my videos to 5-10 minutes for shorter trips. I found the track was better than my expectations. I think it’s being used much more now and it had been very recently marked.
Here's some more detail here with the full video at the bottom onefootinfrontoftheother.nz/dore-pass-back-door-to-the-milford/
Wow!! Amazing video. Thank you for sharing. subd & 👍16
What fantastic scenery!!!
Nice video, I enjoyed it and great to see the Milford Track in all its glory! Interesting to see Dore Pass too.
Glad you enjoyed it! It is beautiful in any kind of weather, isn't it.
Not much of the glacier left. Looks like you made it in time.
Yep, rapidly retreating like all the rest unfortunately.
Excellent summary showing the grandeur of this magnificent trail.
Glad you enjoyed it! There's a Larapinta in 5 minutes coming too. Such an amazing trail; we would like to do it again.
Wow looks great. I need to add this to my hiking bucket list!
I don’t think I’ve said ‘oh wow’ as much in my whole life! Your pictures & videos are absolutely beautiful!!! I’m hitting the larapinta in May & this is by far the best series I’ve watched! Can’t wait to watch your other adventures 😃👏 ⛺️
Thank you so much; I'm glad you enjoyed them. You will love the Larapinta. It is one of the best walks we have done (we would love to do it again some day!). Plan for some high camps to enjoy those fabulous sunsets & sunrises.
It is an awesome track. Big rain coming through Sunday evening, Monday and through a couple of days after though so second half of plan might be interesting!
Cool mission. I'm looking at heading up there this weekend. Considering heading on from the hut all the way along the ridge then dropping down to the Haast river. Just trying to make sure I don't bite off more than I can chew though.
nice videos ❤❤❤
Great video thank you
Love your video and love Milford Sound. We have just subscribed to your channel and look forward to following your journey. Regards Anne & Alan Woodbridge Hill Cottage, Tasmania www.youtube.com/@WoodbridgeHillCottage
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome ❤❤ just subscribed
Will defiantly be checking it out next time I'm down those ways. Great vid guys
Yes. It was mid-summer and the track had been newly marked with plastic snow poles . I’m not sure how they will stand up in the winter. On the whole, it’s a decent track through the bush sections.
That is more straightforward than some accounts I have read. Some of those snow poles may be new. It's probably harder when visibility is poor or you are doing it in the off-season, with limited light and real time pressure, but it's useful to know to sidle across to that ridge. Great views.
Thanks of your neat Vid. I've enjoyed a lot of adventures in the tramping world here in our beautiful NZ. Always staggers me how much I hav nt done, around every corner there is something astounding to see, whether its a clear bubbling stream, a cascading waterfall or cheeky kea. Good work and nice camera equipment. 😀
Glad you enjoyed it. We have only recently discovered how many huts and tracks there are on the West Coast. Later this year we’re off to do the 2000km Pacific Northwest Trail in the US so look out for vids of that in due course.
What a fabulous trip and place
What a top production, glad to be part of it.
It was the people as well as the trail that made it such a wonderful trip. The night on top of Brinkley was magic.
Awesome video - love the colours of the rock. Reminds me of zion a little bit. 👍
It does!
