The FTC says you can't buy clout anymore. Bad news for companies, brands, and influencers buying and selling fake and misleading reviews.
@SkunkieDesignsElectronics • 2w ago
I gave a negative review on an amp a viewer sent me and data to back up my review. I was contacted by the manufacturer asking me to take it down. When I said no, they openly offered to GIVE me several of their multi thousand-dollar amps to take it down. When I said no and explained what was wrong with their product, they asked if they fixed the product, would I re-review it. I said "Sure", they fixed the main problems, I gave it a nice review. Then they threatened legal action for pointing out they fixed the problems the earlier version had and openly denied that they made any production changes, when I have a video SHOWING the changes they made. Bizarre! Oh, and this Amp was awarded "Amp of the year" by multiple other influencers.

    The algorithms reward and incentivise these TH-cam salesman who pretend to be "reviewers" They like to make claims about what they can hear yet NEVER back their claims up with any evidence. Every single one of them is terrified of a double blind ABX test because they know they will FAIL them everytime!!!!!!! Its much easier to just make their unsubstantiated claims and collect their kickbacks. Try calling them out on their BS and they'll shadow ban you, they're charlatans.

    I think you’ve hit directly on the nerve of this hobby.. I will say that I truly believe there to be another side equally as dishonest. That being the militant measuring crowd. With zero proof I believe not only are people paid to talk up unworthy products, I believe in my heart there are militant measures paid to smear competitors. Erin’s audio corner is the ONLY TH-cam reviewer I respect and trust to be honest.when it comes to measuring equipment. He actually illustrates potential issues with the measurements and explains how that translates to what the sonic difference will be. Being told whether I should like something based solely on a schematic is arrogance at its finest. It should only serve to highlight limitations of a product. Listen to people you trust and be your own reviewer.

    The issue, I believe, begins with individuals labeling themselves as "audiophiles." This self-identification often shifts the focus from the music itself to an obsessive emphasis on equipment. As a result, this reverence for gear makes these so-called "audiophiles" more vulnerable to fake reviews, biased influencers, pseudoscientific claims, and even outright mysticism. Unfortunately, the FTC is unlikely to address this problem because the root cause lies with the "audiophiles" themselves. This "hobby" has become akin to worshiping equipment and engaging in rituals, such as "burning in" cables, which are devoid of scientific merit. Over time, this has fostered a community so deeply entrenched in self-deception that they fervently believe their own myths, to the point of viewing rational skepticism as unreasonable or even absurd. To me, the word "audiophile" has essentially become a dirty word-one that no longer represents a love for music, but instead identifies members of a cult fixated on their own misguided rituals and beliefs. Audiophiles screw themselves.

    The brutal truth is that reviewers AT BEST, can make you aware of equipment you may not have known about and perhaps identify equipment you should consider within certain price ranges. That’s it. The ONLY way to know if a piece of equipment is right for you and addresses your needs is to put it into your system and judge for yourself whether it is worth it or not. And before you waste your time getting a piece of equipment to evaluate, you owe to yourself to understand what the issue is that you are trying to address. If you don’t have an issue, sit back and enjoy your music. The search for “improvements” will take you down a rabbit hole that will only end when you run out of money. If you do have any issue, you owe to yourself to understand what it is and the various ways to address it. Alternative equipment may or may not be the answer

    Your video popped up on my TV. I wondered why you had to buy the tubes off Amazon if you were "working with" PSVANE and why you would be reviewing the Acme series rather than the Horizon series, which is their latest. When you stated you were wearing gloves to handle the tubes, I concluded you have no useful information for me. There is absolutely NO reason to wear gloves when handling vacuum tubes. They are not halogen projector or headlight bulbs. Hell, you could probably spray paint them or put Crisco on them and it wouldn't be a problem. The sad part is someone out there may now think they should go out and buy gloves made from silk harvested under a full moon and spun by a virgin seventh daughter of a seventh daughter to handle their tubes. I don't usually bash anyone after watching a video - I just move on. However, this glove thing warrants calling out and leads me to believe that you just like to make videos without any real knowledge of amplifiers or electronics.

    Most audiophiles have speakers placed within a foot of the wall.... Our vintage JBL's are 4 inches from the back wall! Our downstairs living room, dining area, and kitchen are 432 square feet. The speakers are a bit more than five feet apart. That means the woofers are about seven feet apart and the tweeters more than eight. They image fine with the right source material. Sometimes it sounds as though cymbals are coming from a wine rack! Fortunately the ports are on the front baffles. Paul H. Huntington Beach, CA

    Let me provide another perspective. I am finishing up a high-end DIY OB design. It is not cheap. The drivers (including the custom built horn and rear cap) is around $2,000. The crossover is around $400. All in this speaker is going to be in the $4-5k range (I’m having the speaker built by a finish carpenter). Is it worth it? All I can say is that the design is based on a speaker which is offered finished at 3 times the price. And my modifications to the design made the speaker more, not less expensive. I can also say that the speaker does not look DIY at all. Everything is finished, front and rear. Given what my costs, am I surprised that some OB speakers cost as much as they do? Not really. As you said, OB are in a niche market; they have placement requirements most people cannot meet. They also tend to be big if they are truly trying to be full range, another disqualified for many people. These speakers are not ever likely to be high volume speakers where you can cut price based on volume. Rather, they will be low production and relatively expensive as a result. I think the better way to think about OB speakers is whether the OB sound signature appeals to you. If you appreciate what an OB speaker brings to the table (such as outstanding soundstage, typically), you may find yourself hard pressed to find a comparable speaker in the same price range. OB speaker can be built on the cheap, probably with decent to good results. But they can also be part of an “end game” design.

      @ The speaker is around 15” wide around the tweeter and midrange and around 20” wide around the woofers (dual 15” per side). The speaker is around 5’ tall as well. The baffle is 1.75 inch birch butcher block with one sheet of MDF around the tweeter and midrange and 2 sheets around the woofer. Best guess is that they are around 125 lb each. Fortunately, the finish carpenter is local to me. Can’t imagine shipping these beasts! In case you are wondering, each speaker is in the MTWW configuration. The tweeter is a 1.4” compression driver attached to a horn that is approx 9” rounded off square at the mouth. The horn allows the speaker to be passively crossed over low (1200 hz) to a high quality paper cone midrange that plays from 1200 hz to 200hz. At 200 hz, there is an electronic crossover to the two 15” woofers. The midrange is above the tweeter because there was not enough room to place it under the tweeter with the dual woofers. None of the drivers are from Lii Song.

      How do you know you know you are building a high end speaker? When the designer builds the speaker as a 2-way design, listens to it and finds the upper bass lacking in the 300-600 hz range and adds a Scan Speak paper cone driver that costs almost $300….each! LOL!

    • @ccdccd8615
      @ccdccd8615 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The size of this speaker is why OB speakers will be a niche product. I think it looks great, but no matter how good it looks, it is a big ass speaker which will sit around 3 feet from the wall and 1-2 feet from the side walls. There is simply no getting around this and it just won’t work in most home environments. We had a guest bedroom in the basement and my wife suggested that we get a Murphy bed instead of having traditional bedroom furniture. I readily agreed because that opened up that room as a dedicated listening room that could also host guests at times. Prior to my wife’s suggestion, there was another location for the speakers which was also in the basement. Any other location was NEVER considered. For most people, cost isn’t going to be a factor. Size and placement requirements will take the OB speaker out of the conversation before you ever get to cost.

    Now wait... Years ago you had just the baffle built for $1200 and yet you paid $800 for your Altecs. Material is expensive and 2 inch solid wood (or stone) is a lot more expensive than a sheet of plywood. While I bet almost every major manufacture uses CNC to cut out the shapes there is finishing which could be a lot more expensive than just applying veneer. Also the specs do not necessarily correlate with the sound. Frequency response does not a superior speaker make. My only question is how do they sound? For $8000 is there a speaker be it horn or box that blows it away? I'm a horn guy. I have SpeakerLab corner horns powered by tubes so my sound stage is huge there is none of the constricted box sound. Open baffles can also project the open sound signature which might be different than a horn but is probably more similar than different. How far is the front of your Altecs from the wall? In today's world things are expensive. Even without tools you can have baffles made, install your own drivers and control them with a digital crossover. Then even a person with limited expertise could design their own speaker but if you add the cost of materials and labor another amp and all the time it would take, is the cost really that prohibitive if they sound good? I'll admit this is stupidly expensive hobby and no I'll never spend $6000 for a USB cable but as a guy selling Stereos in 1975 I really do enjoy your posts.

    Oversimplified. Pricing is heavily dependent on route to market and scale, not just cost of materials through the lens of a plywood DIY build. OB clientele are limited vs. box speakers, in part through availability, knowledge, space requirements etc. If they are lucky enough to sell 100 each year vs. 100s for classic box speakers. Retail outlet mark-up ~20-30%, distributor (if you have one) 5-15%, marketing 5-10%, 20% profit (if lucky), cost of capital ~6%, R&D, OH etc. Hence why anything you buy through classic retail is min 2-3 times the cost of production. Direct sales you [should] start to save. However, remember you are also buying into a brand, which costs money to establish. I have been planning for a while on some high quality OBs, cost using reasonable set 1500$ (total) drivers and very high quality components, testing/experimentation inc. my time to build (not research) and I have all the tools/expertise is $3.5-4K. If I sell them I would get peanuts. This starts to make $5-8K speakers that I could recoup money from probably make more sense. However, I love the challenge and learning and the fact you don't have to put all the money up front. Would they be as good as a $10K pair with more R&D put in, unlikely, but it is nice to dream they would be close! As for baffle thickness, I won't go there as your assumptions on the other variables involved are overlooked.

    Lots to un pack here. Thicker baffles are not really needed. The pressures that are in box speakers don’t exist here. We’re using 15” and 18” drivers with almost zero resonance issues and most are using 3/4” birch. Some 1.5” butcher block. Both basically sound identical in our testing. An open baffle speaker also takes a lot of design requirements and takes a ton of R&D, it’s just more focused on driver design vs cabinet. From what I’ve seen anyway. I agree the retail market gets pretty good mark up, as our $1700 DIY baffles have bettered any retail speaker I’ve heard under $15,000. But that’s the power of DIY. Also, some of these manufacturers are working with speaker manufacturers, but they are custom drivers designed per the specifications required. For example, we use La Dolce Audio drivers, which are a custom design and build specific for the LDA baffle designs. LDA works with manufacturers to design the speaker they need with the proper Fs QTs, sensitivity, etc to be ideal for the baffle being designed. Anyway, hope that helps. Great rundown. 😊😊

      I have built the LDA open baffles. @abxaudiophiles is correct here. These baffles defy the norm. I encourage others to seek out the diy space for these builds.

    Buy a pair of Decware DNA speakers. Cool runnings.

    Mostly unreasonably priced.. yes. Also, like you said, I cannot pull them out into my living room. I wish more speakers were designed for easier, close to the wall positioning (like my Larsen speakers).

    Hello, thanks for the post and tips to improve Altec speaker! I have a similar speaker altec flamenco, but bass is not tight, Can you share your experience how to tighten bass? placing some heavy leads inside of cabinet? Do you spike your speaker? thanks.KC
