Wildlife in the Topend of Australia
Project 58 A beautiful Australian Savannah Ant M quality
Ants have become a new topic for me after watching a presentation by local ant researcher and self-confessed 'ant fanatic' Francois Brassard from Charles Darwin University. Ants are quite complex and ecologically hugely important for our environment. They are also a great challenge to photography being small, constantly on the move, shiny and often black. This is my first attempt to showcase one species and getting the hang of it using both long lens and macro lens. Once you start looking for them you will find them anywhere in nature, gardens and urban environment. In this video you find Spiny Ant, quite a spectacular local savannah species with color and amazing spikes and hair on the body. Enjoy!

Project 57 The return of shorebirds in 2024 Eastpoint Saltflats
มุมมอง 222หลายเดือนก่อน
Another site of shorebirds in Darwin with a different species mix is the saltflats, of which I also took some footage last year. This year there are a lot less birds in total although this video was taken 2 - 4 weeks earlier compared to last year. It's a very challenging site because the birds are a lot further away compared to other shorebird monitoring sites and you see them only very close t...
Project 56 The return of shorebirds in 2024 to Nightcliff Rocks
มุมมอง 218หลายเดือนก่อน
Every year in September bird lovers anticipate the return of the shorebirds particularly in recent years where birdflu has created havoc amongst the birds in the northern hemisphere where these birds breed. There are several established shorebird monitoring sites in the Darwin area but my favorite would be Nightcliff Rocks close to where I live. The counts in this video are from the 23rd Septem...
Project 55 The Australian Tiger
มุมมอง 3212 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Australian Tiger is my favorite dragonfly and I could not resist to prepare this clip after finding a few locations in nearby Palmerston where it lives. They are a good subject to film because of their habit to return to the same perch. The footage was taken with a long handheld zoom lens. My next video will feature the arrival of our migratory shorebirds in various Darwin shore locations.
Project 54 August Variety
มุมมอง 1313 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video shows shorts of arrivals of Knuckey Lagoon, a seasonal fresh water wetland near Darwin with September usually the best time to visit, as more and more birds arrive from August onward. Also another short clip of Odonata (Dragon and Damselflies). I have started to document this group for the past few months and have so far covered just over 30 local species. Closing this video with a s...
Project 53 A couple of random insects
มุมมอง 1.8K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
The amazing world of insects is under appreciated by many people, mostly because of ignorance of their importance to the continuance of life on planet earth. Over one million insect species are linked into the food chain of life. Every time we loose a link in this chain because of extinction of an insect species or through human interventions such as application of chemicals we inevitably face ...
Project 52 Varanus mertensi with long tongue
มุมมอง 2805 หลายเดือนก่อน
It is always good to see some of our Top End monitors as they have been badly decimated after the arrival of the introduced toxic cane toad. Somehow this specimen at the Howard Springs Nature Park has avoided the carnage. They are a truly magnificent animal, moving at a leisurely pace when exploring but are lightning fast in attack.
Project 51 Odonata at Leepoint Dam
มุมมอง 1235 หลายเดือนก่อน
Odonata is the order of Dragonflies including Damselflies and refers to the large teeth-like mandibles of both larva and the adult. The distribution of many species of the over 105 odonata found in the Top End is quite patchy. Recently I had a look at Leepoint Dam constructed to collect and store surface run-off water for irritation. I was interested to see if there are any dragonflies at all a...
Project 50 Life at the Pond
มุมมอง 186 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is a lovely site at the Darwin Botanic Gardens, where I found a nice and secluded spot to observe the life at the pond. I'm sitting comfortably on a clap chair under a shady paperbark tree while my immediate foreground is lit by the sun around mid morning. All photos and video were taken handheld with my OM1 camera. The more I look out for dragonflies the more interesting things I discover...
Project 49 Predators in the backyard in May
มุมมอง 486 หลายเดือนก่อน
Just a quick one, all captured at home. I will be doing more on dragonflies and perhaps frogs which fits in nicely with my main study object for the year which is sedges, all three of course usually found in freshwater wetlands. In wetlands such as billabongs and lagoons I will likely also encounter interesting waterbirds as a bonus. Yep, plenty of scope to test out my new pair of gumboots.
Project 48 Terns and Friends in April 2024
มุมมอง 67 หลายเดือนก่อน
As I was recently reading up on the situation of shorebirds in Germany I was shocked to learn that some of the shorebird species there are now threatened by extinction all the while volunteers picking up dead birds by the hundreds mostly due to a new strain of bird flue that is quickly spreading across the globe even as far as to the Antarctica recently. Terns are particularly vulnerable as the...
Project 47 Babblers and Crimsons entertainment
มุมมอง 1128 หลายเดือนก่อน
Well, I'm back with a video at last. This one presents a couple of lovely bird species that are relatively easy to find in Darwin, Babblers and Crimson Finches. the first have a lively and lovable temper and the second are somewhat fierce. There is never a dull moment watching these. How lucky we are, still having birds around us for our entertainment. They are intelligent and advanced as they ...
Project 46 Shorebirds at the Saltflats
มุมมอง 4910 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the second video of shorebirds for this location but from a different angle that allowed me to show how quickly the tide is coming in and also giving a better more close up view of the birds that visit this site such as the critically endangered Far Eastern Curlew. As we are now moving past the tipping point of 1.5 degree global warming we will probably experience inclement weather at i...
Project 45 Flowers and their visitors
มุมมอง 1110 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had been slacking a bit as we had some wild weather for a few weeks. This video is about pollinators a subject that has a lot of personal interest to me as former amateur beekeeper and horticulturist. While it was raining I read the 788 page book 'Pollination and Floral Ecology' a seminal work by Pat Wilmer and realized there is endless complexity to the topic and I will never fully understan...
Project 44 Boxing Day shorebirds at East Point Reserve
มุมมอง 8511 หลายเดือนก่อน
The final shorebird count for 2023 for the East Point Reserve location by Birdlife Australia volunteers revealed a nice group of Great Knots in a slightly different location from where they usually roost. The last three months have been quite dry and much of Top End wildlife does it though particularly to cope with the heat. Although we had a few local storm events, they didn't produce the usua...

You shoot this in a war zone?
Great video, thank you for sharing all of that with us !
Purty babies
protostomes are not our equal.
geckos live matter.
Wow! Incredible. It looks like there's something growing on its back. Maybe a fungus or lichen?
Not a fungi, natural texture.
a very majestic, but intimidatingly calculating predator. :]
Thank you for this footage, I will be paying attention for future videos like it!
Thanks, I will start doing a few macro videos next month.
incredible resolution you’ve captured!
All filmed and photographed with OM-systems OM-1 camera, some with long lens some with macro.

Uh-oh. Try to find your way back to being able to suppress your perception of the constant drone of the 20th century, which was the Internal Combustion Engine century. As soon as you start to notice it too much, it creates CONSTANT annoyance. 😬
Yes, but most likely electrification of fossil combustion will soon quieting us down a little bit. Currently one out of five vehicles sold worldwide is electric. The momentum is building up a lot quicker than anticipated and will hopefully extend to lawn mowers and other devices.
Wonderful
I miss seeing these around Darwin more.
These guys have personalities like dogs and are just as smart and full of character. Nice photography!
Life certainly would be mothing without our natural world. It'energy force is what sustains us and yet we continue to pollute it with toxic plastic and degrade it urban sprawl.
So ignored are out little feathered wild and intelligent friends
Does this little actor have a blue tag on his leg?
Bird Australia manages the national shorebird monitoring program. In Darwin shorebird counts take place on a monthly base by experienced birders and number counts of species and details are reported electronically to the national data base. More information on birdlife.org.au/groups/birdlife-top-end/ Tagged birds are reported to a different database and help us to understand the movement of migratory shorebirds.
Evokes a great sense of regret and sadness that we are as a species threatening every other species through our ignorance and self-importance. Great video Roland.
This channel communicates as if from the animals viewpoint. I propose that spaceship earth is not owned by one species to the detriment of all other but to be shared and nurtured respectfully. Understanding and developing empathy for animals ultimately helps us to re-connect with nature and so become nature.
Nicely presented. Thanks for sharing so beautiful shorebirdrs. Big Like
Likely related, Piping Plovers (shorebirds) here.
Thanks, I read with interest, it got me to the wiki page and "The Parker River Refuge on Plum Island, Massachusetts is a national network of lands and rivers dedicated to the safety of its native wildlife and specifically the piping plover. Protecting the Piper with full beach closures, the Refuge now "has the second largest plover population on the [Massachusetts] North Shore"
@@Goosemonk Beaches are closed here too during nesting time.
