My personal opinion: whether you are religious or not, this is a SPORTING event, meant to SHINE THE LIGHT ON THE ATHLETS And the EVENTS. The city hosting the Olympics will often share its history and culture, and Olympic history, too - but it IS the backdrop - not the main story and there should be NOTHING that is offensive or potentially offensive to the people attending or watching. They are HOSTS - and good hosts make sure the guests have what they need (the athletes) and feel comfortable and welcome. ALL of them. All cultures, religions, all orientations. The French are not stupid - they are hosting nations from everywhere, representing a ton of cultures and religions and they know better. This was an 'organizer's' fail - and they don't want to admit it. Do not fall for the "gaslighting" attempt by the artists/organizers ("you people are not educated or sophisticated enough to understand what you are seeing). Ridiculous. ANY event where guests are left wondering, offended, or questioning the taste or appropriateness, is not an event that is well though out. It was inappropriate and not well executed - and like these ladies say, nothing to do with athletes, France or the Olympics, and especially "inclusion". There was no need to mix LGBTQ "inclusion" displays with a religious reference. That IS subversive and disrespectful. Include LGBTQ references somewhere else in the ceremony - or how about just CELEBRATING an excellent athlete who just happens to be LGBTQ? I like France and the city of Paris, but do NOT let this artist/organizers them make you believe you are an "uncouth" North American who isn't educated enough to "get it". These are the same organizers who couldn't plan enough to put protein on the plates of elite athletes and promised them "state of the art cooling systems" instead of air conditioning in their rooms (also a fail). The host nation should get busy fixing their issues - their job is to ensure the ATHLETES have what they need and are safe. It's a beautiful city the French are proud of so get on with the business of providing athletes a beautiful experience. They can experiment with their subjective, political "art" another time.
