Lessons Learned: Restoring a French car in Israel (Full 5 years story & Tour)
Hey everyone!!
Today I have a special video about the restoration of my 1972 Peugeot 204 which took me 5 years to accomplish.
I would tell you a little about the model itself, take you on a tour inside the vehicle, and tell you how hard it was to restore a 50 years old french car in Israel.

Is the registration or road tax expensive for classic cars in Israel? I know the import duties for cars in Israel is very expensive but hopefully they give you a break on the registration costs especially for a classic.
The annual registration cost is low (around 350 shekels which is 90$), the insurance is also low, around 1000 shekels (270$~) While on regular cars its 4-5 times the price. Import tax is 117%, very high, and it's calculated on the vehicle price + shipping. The taxes on imported spare parts is also high, around 55%... I rather pay regular annual price and dont pay such high fees on spare parts from time to time.
@@DIY-Mechanic Do they still charge 55% duty on used parts?
@@Marklin15 yes why not?
I also used to have a 204 Sedan from 1972. My is white, stil alive, but not in my ownership anymore. 1972 were the grills more silverish gray, not black. Black grills were only last models, after 1975. But lovely job, your English isn't bad at all. I met some even in Britain born people and their accents are stil worse than yours, so don't worry. 😉
Didnt knew about another grill in silver, i would check. I replaced mine with a NOS someone actually found for me in Israel. British accent is the worst. Can't under a thing😅
Your steering wheel is from a 1968 model-year. Earlier steering wheels were similar but the centre wasn't padded.
Thanks for the precision
I noticed you have a 6-digit odometer. First time I've seen this on a 204. It is usually a 5-digit odometer. How come? Do you know?
@@laurentherjean9165 i gota bunch of spare parts from someone, and one of the clusters had this odometer. I guess it came off from a newer model but in any case mine doesnt work
@@DIY-Mechanic It must be from a 304 GL. When the 204 was discontinued in 1976, Peugeot introduced an entry-level 304 that was basically a 204 in a 304 body (same seats, same 1.1 engine, same dashboard). I have just found out that they had a 6-digit odometer.
@@laurentherjean9165 it could be, but i dont think it was in israel. Maybe only the odometer mechanism got replaced from 305 or even 205...
*New Subscriber* That was great ! My dad had 2 404's in the late 60's to mid 1970's. Then a 504. All manual. I remember the 2nd 404 ( in petrol blue ) and the 504 ( maroon ). Then the recession in Europe and higher petrol prices meant that the 504 gave way to a new VW Jetta. That car had a recurring electrical problem due to a design flaw that allowed water after rain to collect somewhere it shouldn't in the engine bay. Then that gave way to a 2 year old BMW E30 in 1988. A coupe 318i again in maroon that he still daily drives in his 90's. But the Peugeot 504 was my favourite. I love your car. Greetings from Prague CZ
Thanks for your comment. It means a lot to me. My dad also had 404 pickup in 73. he is missing it very much. Soon i would make a video with E30 :) so stay tuned

Hello there. The cover you have is the right one.. a broken 2501.65; it is the one for steering wheel shifting as fitted on the 204 and first 304. I do not know the series number of the engine/gearbox you have but after 77 i think the shape and gasket changes; I still think it is possible to use the old covers. Just get a new cover and linkiges :) Hope it helps!
Hi it's 2501.65 the problem is that this is not a 304 or 204 gearbox, it's a 305 gearbox.. I also have a newer model (from the bb6) I would try that one as well.. i think that's the reason it's deformed.
I believe you need cover 2501.65 - this needs confirming as I am not sure I understand the parts catalogue completely. Apparently 2501.65 was fitted on most of the 204's XK4s, all the 204's XK5s and all the 304s with a column change. 2501.65 is currently available from Série 04.
250165 is right for the BB6, but in this case it's a BB8, the cover I showed on the video is probably the right one - 250170\71, but need to adjust right linkage to that. it would not be easy...
interesting car. Those rear light clusters are not Euro specifications. We got the square rear light clusters on the 304 and the 204 had narrower horizontal tail light clusters and different headlights as well.
Its not from the peugeot. We got here the same rear lights, but somehow this car ended up with a fiat backlights... I invite you to watch some more videos on my channel about this one and the other 204 I restored. (Episode no. 5 has been uploaded right now)
I enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks for the effort and the great videos!

Your cat has the same voice as mine.
Haha he is not mine, but I take care of this old guy
Are you sure it was a 204 originally? OK, it has the 304 fenders, headlights and grille, but it also has a 304 dashboard. That's a lot of changes. (edit: it has a column change, which is clearly a 204 feature - all 304 cabriolets had a floor change).
Yes. Check the full video for that matter. It is a 67 and have a 204 chasis number in the engine bay
Give a birth to a fuel cap LOL. 😆 Great work!
Oh can you show more of that 304! That bonnet is interesting and the rims look cool! A lot of cool Peugeot machines in Israel!
Haha its actually a firebird... The engine is from a donor, nothing good over there. I want to disassemble the transmission, would upload the full video later in a week or two
Haha same here
Excellent video, Thankyou.
Glad you liked it!
Hi there, check your fuel pump as the filter should have been placed before it and not after it so it probably got a lot of the junk. I would flush the fuel lines and clear the reservoir. The gearbox cover seems correct for the BB6 gearbox. The gasket was probably leaking so they did an ugly seal on it.
Thanks! I just went to the car and did that as you suggested. that was a good idea, I would show what i did on the next video. the BB6 is the right one that goes on the XL5? (I guess this engine is from a 305)
Ah yes it is not the original xl3s but an xl5 engine.. after 75 différent gearbox bb8 but if I am correct only double gearbox linkage for xl5s engine so this looks correct to me
also the xl3 wasn't original here since it's a 204 initially :) I see that the bb8 have a different cover, number 250171. the one on this cab looks from the BB6, which a rod end and not a ball insert (I hope I'm using understandable terms..)
Oh this a one of a kind rebuild! How is the engine mounted on the bottom? The interior is from a 304 but you have a gear lever at the steering wheel and not on the floor which changes the whole mechanism at the gearbox… The Bosch spark plugs are correct for XL5, you can run BP6EFS from NGK as well…
@@tiesto1102 yeah I guess that on the 90s the 305 was very common here in oppose to 204 or 304 cab which were only imported personally by a few people. I havent checked how the engine is mounted yet But the distributor is from a 504/404 which have a different advanced timing... so the spark plugs are not the only issue. For the lever - i think it is just as to replace the cover and put linkage with the correct length.
What a perfect car!! Absolute beauty! Nice job!! Thanks for the videos!
Thank you too! I just started a new project, you should check it out :)

I tried this cam angle. ended up using a headmount with the gopro on top of my nose.

I can totally feel the satisfaction of that new steering wheel beaming through. Interior trim might just be the hardest part of any car to deal with if you don't want to mess it up.
Thanks. it's the hardest parts to find in a 50 years old car, although they were very common... none exist where I'm from :)
😅
great video. what are the 2 kinds of paste/lube you are using? I'm trying to pull that info from the video.
Hi. Wow. I see you just posted the comment now. I used liqui moly (antisieze ) copper paste and Parmatex ceramic grease for the caliper guides. For the guides a silicone grease is also suitable. Good luck
