I was born in sunset park in 1986, and lived on 60th street between 6th and 7th ave. My mother , all her brothers and sisters and even THEIR parents grew up in sunset and even on the same block 60th st. We’re talking going back to the 1920s in sunset park. When I was a kid in the 90s there were mad Puerto Ricans , 8th ave was all Chinese but not as much as it is now. There were still a lot of Irish people in the neighborhood but in small smatterings here and there. I remember block parties in the 90s on 60th and on 61st between 4th and 5th. Free lunches , swimming in sunset park pool, swing away batting cages, the raggamuffin parade, the OLPH bazaar, I could go on

as a 60 year old nuyorican i'm going to say that new yorkers created hip hop. you had to be there, the blacks and puerto ricans are the og minorities of that era - both were considered and called "ninjas" by those in power and i'm not excluding any other cultures but they weren't representing at the time - and they were the creators of an a "urban" culture that has became a world wide phenomenon. hip hop was fostered by the african american experience but created by the black and brown youth of the boroughs who all had one thing in common which is they were from a hood in a time and place called "new york city"
