Jitensha Adventure - Cycling in Japan
Japan
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 มิ.ย. 2021
Konnichiwa! On our channel, we'll show you what cycling in Japan is like, specifically bikepacking with a light cross bike and mountain bike. We've started this channel after our first bikepacking tour through Tottori and Shimane. With each video, we want to bring a piece of Japan to you and show you hidden corners and cool cycling routes!
We started out shooting our videos on iPhone and invested in a GoPro Hero 10 later on which was a great decision! Despite not being professional (yet?), we hope to provide tips of cycling in Japan to make it easier for you to plan your trip.

Taiwan East Coast Cycling Trip - Hualien to Taitung [4K]
Are you curious about what Taiwan's lesser-known East Coast is like and what some of this area's sightseeing gems are? As we heard from people living in Taiwan that the East Coast is best for cycling, we planned a 4-day bikepacking trip in March to explore this rural side of Taiwan.
We rented bikes from the official Giant store in Hualien (which we reserved online in advance) and set off on our adventure, following mainly the national route 9 inland to Taitung City. When planning your route, you can choose between cycling inland or along the coast - we chose the inland route as we wanted to cycle along the stunning rice fields and explore aboriginal townships, but it also gave us the opportunity to follow the train line and jump on a train with our bikes if needed.
Our highlight on this trip was probably the bike path in Chishang (which we found out about on TH-cam, thank you!) as the scenery is just stunning. We met lots of friendly locals who invited us to join them for meals!

Amami Oshima is a stunning island south of Kyushu and north of the Okinawa island chain. The island belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture and even people who have been living in Japan for a long time may not have heard of it! It is just as stunning as Okinawa (if not more!) and a lot less touristy. We visited this tropical island for a week in October and were lucky to be spared typhoons and enjoyed ...

Did you know that autumn is one of the best times for visiting Lake Biwa? Lake Biwa is located near Kyoto and is Japan's largest freshwater lake. It's best explored by bike, as then you can take your time enjoying the lake views, and autumn foliage, and visiting all the sights surrounding the lake. We cycled around Lake Biwa anti-clockwise (which is recommended) and cycled approximately 40-70km...

As I have commented previously... this is THE Lake Biwa cycle video! It is the one that I show friends when trying to explain the absolute Charm of doing this ride. I did it in 2 days and that was a mistake, should I be fortunate enough to do it again, I will likely follow your lead and take 4 days to complete it. Without feeling rushed, taking the time to really SEE it all! I am sad that this lovely video only has less than 1,000 views so far, perhaps in the Future more people will discover it's beauty and elegance, just like the Biwa Ride! 😃🍜🍣🍶⛩🚲
Thank you so much for your continued support ❤
thank you very much for this video
You're very welcome 😊
Going there tomorrow but the maples were still green last week. We'll see tomorrow. Thanks for the video
I hope you’ll be lucky with the colours! Have a great ride with lots of fun sightseeing and cafes on the way!!
Beautiful filmed 👍👍
Thank you so much!
You riding alone?😳
Well, the two of us 😇 and lots of friendly Taiwanese people who help us along the way!
Thank's for your nice video, it's really inspiring :) Do you remember the name of the place you stayed in Beppy ? It seems great !
Thank you for watching 😊 We stayed at In Bloom Beppu - travel.rakuten.co.jp/HOTEL/167829/167829.html
You were right: that's an amazing adventure! Excellent video footage and editing. I'm heading to Sapporo in July and then to Okinawa in late August. Japan is an awesome place to visit and the natural beauty of the place blows my mind! Where will your next trip take you?
Thank you so much 😊 We are undecided about our next trip… in March we cycled aroune the east coast of Taiwan, just before the big earthquake there. That will be the next video! Enjoy Sapporo and Okinawa!! Perfect timing to visit those places.
Thanks to your video, my friend and I had lunch at Chalet Mizugahama; what a beautiful spot!
Glad to hear that you had a great time there! 😊
I love the shot of the train from the bridge! Great video and nice music 👍
Thank you so much! Highly recommend to visit if you’re in Yokohama 😊
Always a BIG smile from me, 😀😃😄 when I see a new upload from you guys, Thank you!
Thank you so much 🤩
20+ years ago my wife and I were bike-packing through Shizuoka. Our first muti-day trip. We had decided instead of paying for airplane and hotel etc in a foreigner country, to but her a bike and sleeping bag and ride our bikes from Tokyo to Nagoya instead so that after the trip we have some actual bike left over from the money. Along the way we took a detour through Shizuoka to stay off the busy coast. Just riding through a random tea field and enjoying it. Didn't even have a Digital camera at the time, let alone smart phone to take photos. So we were just looking. Started chatting with the old man woking in the field. Turns out it was his family business for generations. Then his wife pulls up in the little white truck with a portable stove and pot to and snacks because it was tea time break from working in the field ,so we sat with them and drank some of their green tea. That had such a big impact on me. After that we never made another international vacation again, instead only riding our bikes around Japan, meeting the people, seeking out interactions like that. 20+ years later and now I am guiding bike trips in Japan. Largely because of that one interaction in a tea field in Shizuoka.
Oh what a wonderful story! 😊 Shizuoka does feel like a special place. We spent two days cycling around there and kept wondering why there are not more tourists around, as the scenery is just so beautiful. We also get approached by locals sometimes who invite us for some food and drinks - always a great encounter and unforgettable memories!
Wow! I am very impressed with your trip and video! Excellent video quality and editing. Did you use a GoPro? Something else? Super clear and so many stunningly beautiful spots! Consider me a new subscriber.
Thank you sooo much for your wonderful review and subscribing to our channel 😊 We use a GoPro (95%) and sometimes also iPhone clips. The quality is really good and it has built-in shock-absorbing technology, perfect for cycling videos. Lake Biwa is amazing to explore by bike, as then you can explore all the sights around it!
@@jitenshaadventure I hope Okinawa is a future destination!
@@seizethedayandlive We're actually working on a video of our Amami Island cycling trip right now!! 😊 (Amami is part of Kagoshima Prefecture and less touristy than Okinawa. It was amazing!)
@@jitenshaadventure Sounds good; I'm looking forward to seeing it!
Exciting video!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much ☺️
Thanks for cycling in Lake Biwa. It was refreshing to see how you cut out the charm of Lake Biwa differently from us who live there. Thanks for making a great video.
Thanks for visited us!
THIS! You can't imagine the huge smile this put on my face. As a follower of yours for quite a while now, when this showed up in my feed tonight, I exclaimed happily. Having just done this ride in Nov. 1- 2, '23 I have watched every single Lake Biwa Cycling video since then and can tell you, in all honesty... this one is The Best! It captures the joy, adventure and calm vibe of that ride, Perfectly! I can tell that you two had fun and we all appreciate you taking the Time to film it, so that we can share in the fun and also reminisce. This will be my go-to video when I'm trying to share the magic of the Biwaii-chi. 😄
Oh wow, thank you soooo much!!! 😊 It took such a long time to create this video, so this makes us really happy to hear!!! There was so much to see around Lake Biwa and cycling around it really seems like the best way to explore everything. Our friends drove around the lake and felt underwhelmed. For us it was one of our favourite cycling trips in Japan so far. The autumn foliage was an added bonus! Would definitely do this ride again. Thank you so much for subscribing and taking the time to write such a nice comment!
Hi Jonathan, thanks for sharing your adventure! Which month of the year you did this trip?
We did this bike trip in late October!
Love your videos, want to plan the cycling trip in Beppu like you guys. Could you let me know how to book the guest house like you. Where is about in Beppu ? Thanks Lily
Thank you very much! The guesthouse we booked is called "in Bloom" and we booked it on Booking.com. Unfortunately it looks like they may have closed their business though! To find a similar guesthouse to stay at, I would recommend looking at AirBnb or Booking.com/Agoda. Hope you'll have a great trip!
Are you mounting the GoPro or Iphone on the bike? How to deal with the stock? Any stock absorber? Thanks.
Yes, we mount our GoPro on our bike (on the handle bar). After testing various mounts, this is our favourite one, but it doesn't work well with all types of bikes. The latest gopro has a really good integrated shock absorber and makes the footage look really smooth.
thanks.
Hi! I like your video. Could you share when you visit there? I have plan to visit Miura since the sakura will blooming early than other place in Japan. Around 9-10 february :)
This year the festival at Miura Kaigan was from the 17th of February to March 8th and the trees were in full bloom. You can probably already see it bloom a bit earlier, but it always depends on the weather conditions. I also recommend checking out the city 'Kawazu' on Izu Peninsula which is most famous for this winter cherry blossom festival. This might be perfect for your travel dates. They also have a live cam so you can check what it looks like before you go 😊 kawazu-onsen.com/eng/
Ooh I wanted to visit this lake! What an epic ride and great video Chrissey 😄
Thank you! I highly recommend it 😊 You can rent bikes at Tsuchiura Station or just drive or walk around the lake with your dogs 🐶
@@jitenshaadventure That's a great idea! We'll have to go there sometime thanks for the info :D
HI. Do you know of a place to rent ebikes for a few days? Also where did you rent your bikes from? Or did you bring them? Looks like a great trip! cute video too!
Hey! Thanks for subscribing 😊 We brought our own bikes on this trip. There are quite a few shops around Japan where you can rent bikes from, including the official Giant shops. Often you can also cheaply rent normal bikes at train stations or tourism offices, sometimes even for free. There’s also docomo baybikes in some places like Yokohama, they’re small electric bikes and you pay by hour. So it depends where exactly you’re planning to rent a bike and how long for!
hi!wow. splendid done.
Thank you!
Love your videos, Chrissey! 😊 Very relaxing. Great music too, Jon 👌
Thanks, Alex! 😊
Always bringing us the best! 😄Thank you ❤!
Thank you 🤩
Awesome Video 🙌🏻
Thanks, Tim!
Nice work guys! Great video!
Thanks, Nathan!!
Love your videos , this is a route I would love to do.
Thank you!! The hill climbs with sea views were epic… no wonder so many motorcyclists go there! I would actually highly recommend going by train to Shizuoka, cycling to the ferry that crosses over and doing that, such a great experience!
I did a ride from Nagoya via Koka ,Matsusaka , Ise, Irago and eventually back to Tokyo. Always wanted the local governments to do more with the Pacific coast cycle route.
Wow, how long did that take you? It did seem like quite a few of the cycling paths were new, but there's definitely still more that can be done. Especially on the hill / forest tracks, it doesn't get cleared regularly... But we're getting there I think 😊
any camping spot?? free camping
We're not sure if there are free camping spots along the way! There might be a camping area on the north side of the lake.
Fantastic place. And great choice in music.
Thank you very much! 😊
Awesome 👏
thanks for the video and included map !
You‘re very welcome! Thanks for watching 😊

Hey! We just cycled here yesterday!
Did you like the cycling route? Yesterday was great cycling weather!
@@jitenshaadventure My riding buddy and I didn't really have a plan. We met at 5:00 a.m. in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Pref. We had both been to Baird Taproom in Numazu before, and have friends who brew for them, so we though we'd go there and say hello. We arrived too early though, so we rode up to their brewery in Shuzenji. Up to that point it was a good ride. On the way home, we relied a bit too much on Google Maps, and it got kind of maddening. My idea was to go home via Ito because it was the most direct route to the coast, but my buddy wanted to go via Atami because he wanted more elevation gain for the day. (He's crazy.) Going via Atami meant going farther back down the valley toward Numazu, and a lot of zigzagging through the rice fields. We missed the last conbini before the hill climb because of Google, so we both ran out of water on the climb. Luckily, someone I stopped to talk to gave me a sports drink. We made it back home to Shonan safe and sound.
@@veloboy That sounds like a fun adventure!! It has happened to us before too, thinking there are lot of conbinis around everywhere and then not finding one for ages and running out of snacks and water...
Really enjoy your videos, I lack the skills and time to compile mine over the trips and years that I have made it to Japan. Brings back memories of places I pass through when touring in Japan.

Thanks so much for your vlogs on wakayama. You've already convinced to do the wakayama 800 for my 3rd bike tour in japan , next year straight after golden week. The site for the 800 is very informative, all i have to do is link up the routes, book accomodation and off i go. Enjoyed jonathan's music-nice effective use of what i believe is a 5string bass. Will check more of his music. Lucky for me, first to view and like this vid! :)
That's awesome! Where did you do your first two bike tours in Japan? We also found the Wakayama 800 website very useful with the planning of our trip! Let us know if you want to know any details - accommodation, specific routes etc!
Robert, I hope that individual touring will be allowed soon as I want one more long tour in Japan. We might even be on the road at the same time, who knows.
@@jitenshaadventure my first bike tour( last century) was for 7 weeks doing bits of each main island i.e. kyushu, shikoku, honshu and hokkaido and 2 small islands, shikanoshima and enoshima. 2nd tour was bits round tokyo, kyushu then the shimanami kaido awaji shima and southern shikoku using the ohenro pilgrimage as a guide. I'm so busy with work so the wakayama 800 and your vlogs have been a blessing as i have little time to plan my own.
