It was on a very cold February nite in Ottawa in 2018 that I heard Fred play this gorgeous arrangement for the first time. I was in the midst of struggling with some lyrics I had written for a possible song about reconciliation between folks who are pulled apart. It's good that Fred hasn't really "jazzified" this tune which would really render it too "way out". It's a very tasteful rendition which characterizes everything he plays.

What a sensitive and so well balanced take on this beautiful song. I think it can be common for jazz pianists to destroy the heart of a song with an overkill approach with improvisation and unusual chord structures but this is just so gorgeously restrained and a tender, gorgeous performance.

This is like the 5th listening to this post. WOW this exceptionally precise delicacy truly serves Mr. Wheelers harmonically sophisticated lyrical composition to tee. This tune is deservedly being embraced by great players and singers around the world btw. But this improvised pointalistic counterpoint of Mr Hersh is something profound.
