    Actually visited this church yesterday on the way back from Birmingham. Wonderful both inside and outside. What I also found unusual was the image of a cat pulling at a monks ? robe on one of the external statues surrounding the church entranceway. A cat is a rare sight as its usually a sheep or dove or donkey depicted in church art. I was also impressed by the modern stained glass and some of the replacement stone work especially on the front of the church. The crypt was also fabulous. Next time Im back in Lincolnshire I will use youre video guides once more.

      @@TheLandBetweenTwoWalls Thank you kindly good sir ! Yes, the statues on the west entrance are very impressive displaying significantly less wear than similar aged buildings. They have treated the SW window restoration most sympathetically. That modern stained glass in the north aisle is also beautiful and befitting. The crypt is a gem. To think that the steps down had to be reversed due to pilgrims’ footfall is amazing; and the reliquary to Guthlac bears homage to where new meets old in harmony. Thank you for your kind words.

    Good old oak pillars, still doing their job. Some dendrochronology would be interesting. From what I could see, the main door was a similar, massive piece of engineering. I like church doors, they always have a fascination for me as they are rarely mentioned in the church guides, and yet they are often hundreds of years old, of simple, massive construction, and seem often to predate the Victorian restorations. If you look carefully, the adze marks can be seen. Some even have a door within a door. Grantham? They have a simple beauty of their own, quite equal to some of the finest masonry. ( I think ). Thank you for your film, commentary and well chosen music

    • @englishparishchurches5630
      @englishparishchurches5630 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andrewc2498 Thank you, Andrew and I agree with all you said. As you are aware, there exists a huge difference and distinction, often, between church doors and church porches. It’s most gratifying when they both align in a linear pattern. The wicket door , (door within a door), was often deliberately designed smallish in order for the congregation to bow their heads in deference when entering a church . Also, often ignored, is that the church door, particularly from the Perpendicular period was protected from the weather by the porch, whereas the stonework was liable to the elements. So, in some ways, wood was preserved longer than stone. Thank you for your support and comments. I have six more churches scheduled for release, but sadly they are true ‘fenland churches’ not intended for the undulating earth 850 years ago, falling short of the southern Lincolnshire galleys, but worth their inclusion all the same. Thank you once more, Jonathan

      @englishparishchurches5630 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, and I agree dendrochronology would be useful - would probably require bore holes. Four of the eight pilasters sit in medieval footings and so that’s who I would start.

    Thanks for your delightful documentation of these wonderful English Churches. My early adulthood was spent in New England here in the United States, where I fell in love with Anglo Catholic Church Architecture. Even the lowest of "Low Church" Liturgies, took place in the most dignified of English Style church architecture.

      @englishparishchurches5630 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chrisgosey1821 Thank you, I am most grateful for your comments and support. Over here, commonly, the oldest building in a small village community is the village Parish Church, the majority built between the early 1100s and the mid to late 1400s, nearly 1000 years of daily use and frequentation. Unfortunately, with the recent massive increase in secularism in these isles, the future of these buildings remains unclear and uncertain. I see them as ancient communal structures and therefore never reference religion directly in my tours, focusing more on the character and community that have lived, loved and died for their whole lives within feet of their doorways. If, when I am long gone, future generations can tap into what they resemble today as their carers become sparse, then hopefully I will have done my part in keeping them alive, if only visually. Thank you.

This is purely a hobby - I make no monitisation at all from any of my videos, hence the lack of the 'Please hit the bell, share and subscribe' as viewed on many sites. Now retired, I know my days are numbered, but if I can leave a legacy for future generations that 'this is how parish churches used to look like', then I would be happy. I have been doing this for several years now and I am afraid that my floorspace has taken up my book case. From that I mean that the historical information to which you you allude comes from research. However, there have been many times that I have been hoisted on my own pettard when I arrive back home following a 120 mile round trip to read that I have missed the most important artifact/contribution that the church had to offer in my bungling filming ! Funny thing is, Matthew, when I arrived during the beer festival a couple of months back I was astounded how big, bold and beautiful it was inside. I thought 'this is a church worthy of more than twelve minutes commentary - I'll do my research and hopefully do it jusice. Obviously, as you can hear, I couldn't get access. It wasn't the 'usual' locked door with a keyholder living miles away. This time it was the entire perimiter that was padlocked - never made it to the South door. Really sad because if you look at their website you are provided with the opening and closing times. It appears to be a problem hereabouts with churches such as Whittlesea being 'out of bounds', yet if you go down the road and see my commentary on Ramsey, they were so accommodating going beyond themselves to help me.

The saving grace was the candleabra - one of the few items that added colour. I trust that you understand that this is not me being selective. I have an OS map and I will visit every church on there. We, the Anglo-Saxon Race brought this world into the modern age. Now we see politicians, that are us, tearing our heritage and our birthright down for some idea that if we prostrate ourselves to these people who despise us, everything will be Honky Dory. We, the White English speaking descendant's of our Great Anglo-Saxon Race should have listened to what cautions were spoken at the tail end of the Great British Empire and not relinquished so much of territory that was conquered with Anglo-Saxon lives. You may think me a racist, but I see what is happening and I will not apologize for my heritage and the greatness of my forefathers in their accomplishments of the past 800+ years. If we just lay down they will trample and take everything we have built and fought for. Sorry for the rant, You Sir are ding a Great Deed documenting our still standing Houses of Worship and I Thank You.

    So sad it is no longer a church worshipping God

      So true, particularly for the more rural churches. My ambition is to record as many as possible before I 'pop my clogs' so that future generations may appreciate what we are fortunate enough to have today. Thank you for your comment.
