Nice little amp
Why did I waste money on modeling amps? Thanks for the demo!
Thanks buddy! Great to still have comments this many years later!
The fatal mistake of this video is that you mic'ed the amp, thus disguising how loud it will be---it's not how it would be used in a real setting. You can make a pocket-sized transistor radio sound loud if you mic it
It was more loud enough for a small flat like mine :) I hope my word is trusted over my fatal microphone
@@zoostationjason It's not---words are cheap, hearing is believing
@justsumguy2u haha!!
A little bit of Benny Hill theme is always a bright spot to a day!
Haha I agree!
Since they are made in china now. The sound has completely disappeared
Since it’s only 20 euros more to buy the cr instead of hr and you can also connect it to a 16 ohm cab, is it still better to buy the hr? I guess they would sound the same through the cab?
thumbs down for taking 6 minutes to play the dam thing. i just wanted to hear the amp.
Sorry you felt as strong!
I suggest you use the timestamps if another video is similar - they are super helpful if you don’t enjoy people talking.
Hi Jason - what do think about the hissing noise that appears when the high gain channel is on ? I noticed that you turned down the volume on the guitar. Is there something wrong with the amp ?
Hey - thanks for the comment! Not too sure. I don’t think anyone was wrong with it, the electricity in my room can be rather noisy at times. I did sell the amp not long after this video so I haven’t had the amp in years - hope that helps!
Really interesting and helpful ! Thank you for sharing Jason !
Anti-reflective glasses. There, I just changed your life. ;0) Oh, and great review!
Haha! A great idea - if I ever upload again I’ll look into it 😂
Just found this review and it’s great! I’ve got a Les Paul and, like you, I want to move away from modelling amps (Catalyst) to a simple valve amp. Naturally I’m looking Marshalls to match the Gibson! Would you recommend the DSL5CR? That’s the one I’m considering but I’ve been told to look at the Blackstar HT5 too.
what about the emulated out when plugging your headphones in? top or flop?
I got this amp 2 months ago, changed out the tubes for better tubes and put a 12AT7 in the V2 socket to tame the high gain channel a little and now I love this amp. I also have an Orange Crush 12 and a Bugera V5 and a Swart Atomic Jr. The Marshall is the most fun to play at the low volume levels I usually play at, it's the perfect bedroom amp.
What tubes did you put in?
@@jeremywho2289 Some tubes I already had, a Groove Tube 12AX7 and a Sylvania 5751 which is a 12AT7. The power tube is a Mullard 12AU7 I got from Amazon. Any decent tubes like JJ, EH or TungSol will sound better than the stock tubes.
I just ordered a JJ 12AT7 for the V2 to hopefully tame the gain in my Peavey Bravo. Hope it works.
Exactly the review i was looking for. Thank you.
Is it normal for my amp to hiss ?
I wouldn’t have thought so man, hissing reserved for snakes! 🐍
@@zoostationjasonI looked at various reviews of the latest version of this amp, and found yours to be the most helpful. Really enjoyed your demo and your playing. I'm now very tempted by this amp. Thank you.
What's with the hum/buzz? you're not using single coil pickups?
Probably the room he's in. I have the same problem. None of my guitars have sc's and sometimes the hum is so bad I just stop playing. I even get hum on the tv.
@finishin.my.coffee8780 I think so man, it happens more often than not in my wee flat
but all the amps I buy never like they do on the youtube
What amp do ya use? :)
DSL1C, Supro King 8, Spark, Vox super beetle, blackstar fly 3, Fender Mustang V.2 20watts @@zoostationjason
@atvau ohh nice one man! How is the Supro?
sounds alright I use a overdrive pedal on it. pretty good but not far out like the youtube demos. Have lollar pickups in my 1990 les paul Gibson too @@zoostationjason
@atvau I’ve heard Lollar pickups are quite the treat!!
listen to that noise!!!!!! seriously no mention???? wtf
Not sure I noticed any noise - my mic set up wasn’t ideal so I recon noise from that. It’s a quiet wee amp :)
Triode Mode is Full Power, Pentode is Half Power for saving the life of the tubes
Both together sounds brighter as the pickups are in parallel. Two resistances in parallel reduces the resistance and impedance a bit like how a lower output pickup has a lower impedance and resistance.
I've got the same 1983 model but in Arctic White which I bought new in early 1984. I wanted the black version for the same reason as you...fallen in love with the Edge's Strat, but my local music shop only had the white one in stock and in the days before on-line shopping, you had to take what you could find available. It cost £199 back then and the USA Strats in the shop were, I think, about £450 which was too much for me at the time. It was the only guitar I had for about 13 years when I started playing in a band and bought an Epiphone SG as a back-up. It was still my main gigging guitar for quite a few years. The only part that's been changed is the 5 way switch which I had to replace about 20 years ago. I don't gig with it any more as the frets are getting pretty worn but I still use it for home recording and sometimes take it to band rehearsal as a treat as it's one of the nicest guitars to play, even though I now have a couple of Fenders and a few other mid-range guitars. Hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed mine !
What a great story Peter! Thank you for sharing that with me. Interesting £199 in 84’ is equivalent to around £800 in today’s money - which seems to be the top end I’ve seen this going for on Reverb!
Time stamps in video! Thank you to anyone who manages through 15 minutes of my waffling! A proper tone demo/full chat coming soon(ish).
I really wanted one! They weren't sold in my country.
Aw that’s rubbish! Where are you from?
@@zoostationjason Ukraine. Rubbish location for the last 2 years, indeed. :) Love your accent! Brilliant review, enjoyed it tremendously. Very personal, yet concise and qualitatively produced.
@LegsON I’m very sorry about what’s happening in your amazing country, I have had the privilege to meet many incredible Ukrainians here in Scotland and with my work & very honoured you’ve watched one of my videos!
@@zoostationjason Thank you very much for your kind words, Jason. They're greatly appreciated.❤️ God bless you!
That's your strings ringing over the nut.
Just the footswitch has a bad feedback “ click” when switch from the dirty channel to the clean channel. Damn
Great : playin : getting one of these Amps now
So kind of you to sat Kenny! Thank you! Hope you enjoy the amp
Does attenuation bring it down to .1 of a watt or as you claimed .5? I have tried to find out and it looks like it is 1 tenth of a watt or 0.1.
You are right! Puts it to 0.1 watt
Great!
Thank you Sir Charles!
Один вопрос - зачем? Зачем травмировать свою психику, когда есть Yamaha thr, Boss katana air, Positive grid spart и etc? Мазохизм? Ок, я вышел из чата....
Cool review Jason, wish more review videos were like this. What mic did you use to record the amp? Sounds great!
Cheers man! The mic for this one was just a Scarlett CM25 MkIII, pretty affordable and probably not meant for an amp haha
This vid is a yr old but the amateur in the bedroom 😂 was great commentary!!............Awesome sounding amp and guitar!!
Haha! Thanks dude!!
@JasonLikesThings Absolutely Bro HA HA 🤣
Great review cobber 🤘🤘Thanks very much. Best one I have seen yet. Och aye!!!
Thanks man!! Very much appreciated 🤘
You have my favourite intro of any TH-cam channel 😂
Haha thanks!
Awesome review and playing. If I could get a metallic orange or copper, especially with the pink model's iridescent pickguards, it would be a no-brainer as it's a very stylish guitar that sounds great. I'm trying to buy no more Chinese guitars and instead buy more Vietnamese guitars like IYV, so that would be great for me. Maybe a Lipstick Red - Hartwood already offers that finish in another model.
Metallic orange would be amazing! Cheers for the comment
Great review, convinced me to buy one. Especially like that you showed us how the 0.1 watt setting sounded like, thanks man!
Glad I could help!
Did you buy one?
@@carlob95yes but don’t have it anymore. I still have a Yamaha THR, my favorite for really low volume playing. I also have a HX Stomp that I run both bass and guitar through as well if that also helps
@Sei_Kato Those wee Yamaha amps are brilliant!
@@zoostationjasondefinitely agree!
Vert nice sounding pickups
Still loving them to this day!
just bloody play man. 5 mins of chat! 😂

@@zoostationjason do you mean that or are they empty words?
That nasty sound with the bridge pickup sounded great!
Thanks dude!!!
I have purchased one of these, great guitar recommend to those who don't want a run of the mill looking guitar, great demo video kind regards Pete
Mon the Bairn's! :)
Indeed my man!
Aye ye tak tae bloody much 😛 just joking with ya. I’ve got one I’m waiting for now. Should be here Tuesday. I’m also from Scotland. Needed a great tube amp again. No more solid state for me. Ever.
Just getting round to seeing this comment sorry - I know, I will shut up when I next upload (a willny) 😂
Thanks for this great review and very nice playing! Also I like both guitars, but the Hartwood ... wow. Some cheaper guitars have something special even they aren't playable well. Reminds me on Blood Red Shoe and the Tucson or the german "Hertie Casters". Can't decide wether to choose the 1CR as a bedroom amp (quiter playing at less watts), having the 5CR (should be too loud, have to be run with volume down, but ha a volume/gain for the clean) or going for modeling. But I also like to keep it simple and clean. Well, unfortunately - and you demo it a bit, the clean channel isn't that clean at the start (ok, humbucker) and there won't be a clean volume range. I like the Marshall sound, but also the clean tone. Not sure, how loud you can get in clean channel without much crunch, that part is missing a bit, 'cause you set it to 0.1 watt. Don't know if this combo will fit to me? Thanks in advance.
How long would you say the valves will last with 3-4 hours of daily use at lower to mid volumes? Your amp sounds great and I want one..
Thanks for the kind comment, unfortunately I have no idea! I know people who have never changed the tube in amps they’ve gigged with for years and some folk who have had terrible luck with tubes going.
Could last 4 years or even 20. Depends ... and you can't influence it. There's no standb and it seems the heating up is very fast. I always let the amps heat up for some minutes. Jason, how warm or hot gets this combo? When it gets hot you may open the back, but at 1 watt I don't expect much heating.
I think I'm going to try my luck and buy it for home recording. I have a question.. Can the dsl1cr speaker cable (at the back) be plugged to a separate solid state Poweramp pedal or solid state head?? (such as the orange micro dark or the exh 5mm). My goal would be to use the speaker of the combo only ( for daily noodling etc to prolong tube life).
@@lucid_delirium976 Wouldn't save the tubes by not using them, makes no sense since this combo isn't that expensive and rare. I think this combo is self biased and so you only have to change them pairwise (matched ones). You can detach the speaker cable for using it in amp, yes. 16 Ohms. The speaker itself only cost around 25-35 $€. Go better for a 12"
@@rotepillenfresser4544 I'm not sure I explained my question clear enough. I have a solid state Poweramp+preamp pedal. It's made to power any guitar cabinet of any ohms. What i was wondering was If the speaker cable of the dsl could be disconnected from the dsl, and then plugged into my Poweramp pedal. The dsl would be turned off. The 8" speaker in the dsl would get powered by my Poweramp pedal. Is this possible? And wouldn't this method prolong tube life?( seeing as the dsl would be turned off. )
I live in a private house and can afford to play loud. Can this amp play really loud through cabinet112?
I’m sure it would be loud enough to suffice in a room but it is only 1 watt!
@@zoostationjason I'll take 5 watts and we'll see) thanks for your honesty
Let me know how it sounds!!
When living private go for the 5 watts,, also due the better controllable clean channel, but there's not that great difference you might expect in loudness. If you halve the loudness of 100 watts you'll have a 10 watts of a valve combo, halve 10 watts -> 1 watt, 1 watt -> 0.1 watt. In dB that's always 3 dB. Check out the comparision DSL 5CR vs 20CR. That's not that much and the reach both more than 100 dB, think 107 vs 112 dB. That's too much for your ears. You should better go for a bigger combo with a 12" speaker. The 5CR should fits a 12" with some work, the 1CR won't take a 10" as far as I read. The 1 Watt is still too much for a room, be aware!
Yes! Let's do this 💪😍!!! Get to know the secret - p̶r̶o̶m̶o̶s̶m̶
Great to hear my language on a guitar channel mate. Great work you're doing, Cheers from a Glaswegian in Austria.
Yass man! Paisley boy here! Glad you’ve found a west coast voice! 🏴
You seem to enjoy the sounds of the 60’s 70’& 80’ s that’s a good thing , the best years of music , that was my best time in the center of the universe, Muscle Shoals Sound
Yes! 3 excellent decades of music, I’m especially inspired by 60s electric blues and 70s rock. Thanks for the comment
Great review showing exactly what can be achieved with this amp. Most reviewers just stick to 1 or 2 tones or just shredding which doesn't help much at all.
Why thank you so much! I certainly can’t shred so that’s why there’s none of that 😂 thanks for the kind comment!
