Piaggio BV400 First Ride Review – Better than a Vespa GTS 300?
recently reviewed the 2024 Vespa GTS 300, a stylish icon with classic Italian charm. But today, I’m hopping on something from the same parent company-the Piaggio BV400. This modern maxi-scooter packs more power, bigger wheels, and a sportier ride, but does it outshine the GTS 300?
In this first ride review, I break down how the BV400 compares to the Vespa GTS 300 in performance, handling, comfort, and overall ride feel. If you're torn between classic Vespa style and modern Piaggio performance, this video is for you!
Would you choose the timeless charm of the GTS 300 or the extra muscle and stability of the BV400? Drop your thoughts in the comments!

At $800 a set, it's too rich for me. Also, it might not work with long exhausts. I'll keep spinning bikes on their kickstands. Nice collection though.
Nice garage!
Grazie!
Fellow sport touring enthusiast who has owned several VFRs and Versys and recently picked up the 2024 AT ES AS DCT. It’s the most impressive motorcycle I’ve owned. Love the bike for many of the same reasons you’ve listed. Ride safe out there 👍🏻
Thx for the comment and it seems like we have been on the same riding journey! Enjoy!
Is it possible to use AirPods?
Sure you can but it would be a hassle putting a helmet on and off with them in I think
@ i ‘ve tried an is not complicated, do you imagine listening music and calls with great quality and noise cancelling? Thanks!
I just test rode the 1100sx last weekend and i have to say, its the best all around bike I have ever ridden. No fatigue at all after a couple hours of riding and more power than a person will ever need
That's fantastic to hear! I'm really enjoying mine too.
I have now a Kawasaki Ninja 1000 sx ( 2023) The first one Before I had Yamaha / BMW This is the best mc I had very good. I .R
thats a great endorsement. Congrats! Safe riding Mate!
Nice review. Any recommendations for ZX10R bar risers, and maybe even lowering the pegs a half inch or inch? I can't find good options other than race options which make things even tighter. Or this 1100SX with slightly lower bars maybe - how much can the bars be adjusted you think before they begin to interfere with the tank. Thanks.
Its an interesting question. So you are looking for a riding position that is closer to the ZX10? I would probably start with the pegs first. I really like Woodcraft pegs as they are very adjustable and i use them on my track bikes. They make them for the ZX10 and i am sure the SX too. As for the bars, my understanding is that there are very limited options for the new models. Ive seen some folks use APEX riser clip-ons. But as you know, clearing the fuel tank at full lock would be challenging
Thanks for your video. Can you connect the phone with the bike and use google maps without a headset being connected?
No problem, and yes you can
How is the wind buffeting at hgwy speeds? Any improvements? Clean air\dirty air hitting helmet?
Hey there Ian. I’m 6ft, but everyone has different torso’s even if they are the same height. For me, with my Shoei RF1400 it js pretty good compared to my old Multistrada V2, but with the peaked Shoei Hornet lid with visor on, it’s pretty average.
Just wondering, if you're in nz, where did you get the demo bike from as I'd like to try one as well? Cheers
Hey- I live in the US, Seattle
Thanks for another informative review on an incredible bike. This bike has several “Easter Eggs” not noticeable at 1st glance: 1: The hand painted green lettering on the Supercharger emblem. Kawasaki states they hand paint it. 2: The twin taillights at first seem nondescript…until you realize the taillights are twin “H”, representing H2. 3: The large yet hidden “Z” on the right side panel. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. This Z is reversed on the left side panel. 4: The nut on top of the triple clamp is in the shape of a Japanese Shuriken…a Ninja weapon!
I’ve seen the Shuriken, but I had no idea about the H2s! Thx for the insight
@@KiwiMoto72To confirm, all 4 Easter Eggs are on the bike you reviewed, the H2SX, not the original H2.
Thanks for the review. Did you successfully convince your S.O. that this machine needs to be in your garage?
Thx Paul, and yes, indeed I did!
Thanks for the review. I noticed the same annoying whistle that I heard when TMF was riding his. 😐Couldn't really hear it when you put the visor down. Did you notice it? That's a fancy mic. Have you tired the 32bit float recording on the transmitter? 👍🏽
hey thanks for the comment - i have a wired mic setup on this particular helmet, and i actually thought i had set the gain right but it turned out that i hadn't. I do have 32bit floating setup also, that i will start testing. As for the whistling, i didn't notice anything other than the typical whistle that i have seen to be characteristic of some inline 4's. Safe riding!
@@KiwiMoto72 Getting good sound can be tricky, but you've def got the right hardware. Yeah, I thought the whistling was from the screen, but if you didn't notice it then it can't be that bad. Cheers.
@ keep the feedback coming. Thx!
Excellent review! I love that you set up the ride review with a sit down category review. The shop owner interview was nice as well!
Thx for the feedback Rick! I’m still finding my way around this TH-cam thing, so please keep the feedback coming!
ZX10 with high bars. Problem solved
A great observation and one that would probably see me lose my license... lol
Another great review mate….. I traded my 2018 Ducati’s Multistrada PP for a 2024 Ninja1000SX and being of a similar age totality agreed with the sentiment and reasoning for the Ninja. I’m really enjoying the bike , it’s a great for the roads over here in Scotland and I can manage a 500 mile day on this bike as well as fill the panniers and get away for an overnight camping trip. I’m and 5’8” , fitted the lower seat for a more comfortable “ engaged” position and it suits me perfectly. Keep up the great content and good luck with your wife when you’re explaining your new purchase.
Mate - thanks for the feedback. I'm a total newbee so its encouraging to hear. I am also a Scotty! My family are from Dreghorn, but i was obviously raised a Kiwi. Glad to hear you love your Ninja! Stay in touch!
Thanks mate, if you're ever in Sydney I'm buying because you've explained this so well. I also know programmers and one once said "you make it idiot proof and someone invents a bigger idiot". Honda didn't get that memo.
Mate- thx you! I’m a total newbie at this YT caper and am glad that it made sense. My day job is in Tech too, and that quote is classic! I take a pint of VB 🤪
Song new way cleaver just the way it is the sound how and what you say your .hearing the kind the of music just the way so cool
Hey Vicki and thx you for the feedback! Ride safe!
Hi! How do you like the new windscreen? Helps with the wind over 120 km/h?
Hey there Ivan. For me at 6ft tall it’s definitely better than the stock shield but torsos differ from person to person. Even two exact same height folks will feel different in my experience with any shield. Also the ADV style helmets are generally pretty bad with wind protection and I tend to wear a shoei RF1400 most of the time.
What phone mount do you have on that jewel of a Bike? I have a 24 as well, got it in July!
“Jewel” is a great way to describe it! I’m a huge Evotech fan. I have their Quadlock mount evotech-performance.com/collections/kawasaki-ninja-1000sx-performance-2020/products/evotech-quad-lock-compatible-mount-kawasaki-ninja-1000sx-performance-2020
I bought a 2022 went to it from my 2012zx14r. Just found myself doing more long distance touring zx14 worked for it but the hard bags are just so much nicer than the sw motec blaze system i had on the zx14. Looked at the 1000sx but the power was far from being able to replace the zx14. When they added the adaptive cruise in 22 is when i decided to get one. On long hiway runs on the zx14 it was almost impossible to keep it under 100mph so i decided to get something with cruise control before loosing my license.
Thx for the comment. Funny you should mention the ZX14. I took the new 2024 SX out yesterday and came close to ridding a ZX10, just for shits and giggles. It’s also a wonderful machine, but that and thiz H2 SX are a bit too expensive for me right now. You are luck to own one! Btw I just rode the 2024 1000SX, and I’ll post a first ride review soon.
Once all of this is setup, can you use other map apps like Gaia or Garmin to navigate on the Africa Twin screen?? I'm looking to buy a 2024 AT this spring and was curious if I would still have to use my phone for navigation when using any app other than Apple Maps
Hey there - so long as the App runs on iOS or Android then you can run the app that way. But the AT does not have native support outside of that. In my case, i opted to have my Garmin Zumo above my AT screen because i prefer a dedicated GPS - call me old school :-)
Thx for the comment- I’m still learning this stuff but plan to add index to content to more videos moving forward. My latest videos have them
I like the video but why do you dub in different engine sounds while you are riding? My previous bike was a 23 Triumph 1200 GT Explorer which definitely had a lot of HP. I traded it for a 24 Honda CRF450RL to do some dirt riding. I miss the road so now I'm fixing to buy my first Africa Twin ES DCT in the near future. Great scenery also. Thanks.
Hey Mate- the Explorer and the Tiger 900 have both been on my “almost bought” list for a long time. I really like the way Triumph think about their model line up. The new Tiger 800 Sport looks very promising too. Thr CRF450. I have a CRF300 Rally and like it a lot. The 450 is next level! So about my audio. Honestly I am learning this stuff and I know the audio wasn’t my best work. What happened was my mic was messed up and so I had to try and mix the sound back over. Would love feedback on engine sound. Do you like to hear it or not? Please keep the feedback coming!
@@KiwiMoto72 I do like to hear the engine sounds. Sorry if I sounded too critical. I have never done any video, so I am not a good critic. Keep up the videos. I will own a new Africa Twin soon.
@ Mate - all good and no need to apologize. I am a learn it all, not a know it all,c and i love the feedback. I am actually going to set up a mic for engine noise - and next time i am out on it, i'll record some for ya
Remember to turn the volume up by the control on your left handlebar next to the page lever. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't hear anything. Once it's all set up your Cardo doesn't control the sound level the bike volume lever does. Yes, I'm an idiot.
Great tip! Thx!
Hi there Thanks for the nice content you put out 😊 I had a H2 SX and used it for commuting 90km daily. I found it a bit too much on the heavier side and have switched to the lighter 1000SX . Watching your video gave me a reminder of what I gave up and what I have. There is less stress in dense traffic with the lighter bike and here in Norway we are getting heavy fines for breaking the speed limit which is maximum 80km/h in most of the west part of the country. So in my case no need for the mean green speed rocket. But I loved it, specially when I took off to a longer journey Cheers
Thx for the feedback. The struggle is so real! The hooligan in me wants an H2!
hi you can buy a security bolt for the ram mount👍
Oh good tip! Thx!
I am making the same comparison at this moment and I feel the same about Kawasaki edging out the Suzuki for the same reasons, however, I might be buying the Suzuki simply because I think the local dealer is offering a better financial deal. I can get the hard bags, USB, and heated grips at almost the identical price as the base Kawi. If I hadn't tested both there would be no issue, because they are both great
That is a really smart decision. Sometimes a great deal wins you over! In all honesty, I think the Suzuki has a more engaging engine… Will be super curious how you line those brake though, in terms of feel. Ride safe Mate!
Thanks for the video, appreciate being able to see someone else be the test dummy before buying and pulling my own bike apart haha.
Glad it helped you out - let me know how it goes with your install!
Afrika je určena do terenu, na kvalitni asfalt je lepsi cestivni motorka jako nt1100 nebo harley...kupovat si afriku na ježdění po rovném asfaltu neni dobrý napad
I agree that the NT1100 looks like a great sport tourer, but it’s not available here in the US. But having owned a few Harleys, they don’t hold a candle to this Moto with the 19 inch front. This would out perform the Harley in all areas other than a straight line..
Hello thanks for your video. Have you done long distance touring on both your multi and the toureg ? If so how do you rate the toureg for road touring ? Long distance comfort ?
Hey there- I have toured on four different multis over the last 15 years. The Multis, regardless of type or generation for me, at 6ft tall, 200lbs are much more comfortable for long long 400 mile + days in the saddle across large Geos. But the Taureg is no slouch either, and will easily mile munch but with less touring features. The Taureg really shines when you see that gravel or dirt road and wonder what’s down there… Deoending on the Multi, you would think twice before venturing down the road, but not with the Taureg or the DesertX for that matter.
Funny how you mentioned Mallory Dobbs, however you failed to mentioned she was just a joke when she was racing in MotoAmerica, and I believed she finished around 40th spot last year ran, of course the commentators kept talking about her like she was something special, just because she was woman. Fast forward to the girlie series in WSBK and we all saw how pathetic it was for all but the 4 top riders, but what do you expect when wokeness and DEI is the game of the day, particularly in NZ, just look how you pick your ship captains in your navy.
First of all. I am an American. Secondly, what exactly is your point and please tell me the last time you rode fast enough to qualify to race in Moto America.
@ I stopped racing before MotoAmerica came around, but when I raced I was one quickest guys on 125’s, and often raced against who’s who in MA now, and guys like Ben Spies, and the Hayden brothers etc. A few years ago I had the chance to take out a Moto3 bike at Jerez and I did a 1:50.4, not too shabby for someone that almost could be the grandfather to racers in CEV Moto3. So yes, I actually know how to go fast, on top of it I have helped more than one American who did the big jump to go over to Spain and Italy.
@obamabigears734 congratulations - so why are you hiding behind a derogatory “Obama Big Ears” user name? I all up for debate but if you want to criticize others then don’t hide behind user names.
I was lucky enough to have known Mat reasonably well in the early 80s and he's not changed a bit. Maybe a bit less hair. :-) I can confirm as well the part about the West London house having been to some parties there. The poor neighbours... Mat has always been very self effacing. When you're that good a racer or journalist you've no need to blow your own trumpet. So thanks for a great interview and sharing just a few of the stories Mat has to tell.
Hey Mike and thx for the comment. Yes 1000% I can see he’s a very humble guy which is a rare thing in our sport!
Loved the interview 🙏
Thx!! Keep the feedback coming please!
Mat Oxley, Kevin Cameron and Cesar Agüí, the best Motorcycle Journalists who I have read ever. The common thing between them: Passion for Motorbikes. Thank you for the great interview.
I think it was TopGear who said you weren't a real petrolhead if you haven't owned an Alfa Romeo. I'll top it off by saying that you're not a MotoGp freak if you don't listen to EVERYTHING Mat says/writes!
I love this quote, thx for the reminder!
Can’t understand why 688 views but only 31 likes🤷♂️ WTF
first of all Mate, i love your user name! As for the lkes. Who knows. I am a total amateur and this is not my day job, but please feel free to share and help with the awareness! :-)
Interesting! I have a 1000sx the past 2 years and just added an Africa Twin as well! Heading to Alaska this summer! Let us know when you plan on heading up!
That sounds amazing. I hope you have an awesome trip and be sure to post pictures! I think the two Motos really are a great balance for any garage… well that what I tell my Wife!
Great thanks, did not know Matt that much but had a great listening to your podcast. Thanks very much
I’m really glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent, love Matt as a journalist and his days as a racer especially the Team Bike days on the RC 30, a spade is a spade with Matt. The only gripe with this interview is the sound volume between the two of you, got to be a bit of a pain by the end.
Hey. Thx for the feedback and apologies about the sound. I’m still learning this stuff. Keep the feedback coming!
Ask Mat about his Microfone set up, it is perfect in his side.
I love what he said at 41:50 👍 Thanks Dave!
Great review, love your thoughtful, articulate style …
@@scottwood135 hey Scott. thx you! I’m a total amateur so really just learning this YT thing. Please keep the feedback and requests coming!
Just came across your video now, and I am in the process of selling my Ducati multistrada 1200 Enduro, for a Ninja 1000 sx performance tourer,
I've owned all the Multis since they first launched, and I love them, but nothing beats how a proper fully faired sport touring bike feels in terms of the road feel it gives you. I hope my video was useful. I am totally new to this TH-cam thing. I also did a longer video on it here th-cam.com/video/ffBTnh8fW88/w-d-xo.html
Gotta get Zach up to the Ridge! That would be awesome!
Contents good but the music. why oh why, so not necessary.
@@MegaWebsters good feedback, thank you. I’d love to get more. Personally I don’t get too excited listening to people ride with nothing but wind noise, unless the undertones of the bike’s engines are clear and awesome. So I try and break it up. I actually just bought a great mic for recording engine burr so will try and cut back on the music in the future. please keep the feedback coming!
N1K sx....all the way! Traded in my C14 for the Ninja, no regrets.
I actually had my Sena 10C EVO connected to my phone and AT additives working fine. I got a new helmet with a SC2 built in headset and it didn’t work. I’m gonna connect it how you did it.
Interesting - i haven't tried a Sena. I did find that before i did this setup, my Cardo would very randomly work, but this dedicated setup has been flawless. Good luck, and let me know how you get on!
Having just collected my 2nd hand Africa Twin (2020 model) this has just helped massively, so big thank you from Australia!
hey Mate - Kiwi in Seattle here :-) You are most welcome! Enjoy the Aussie Summer!
Question, do we need to stay plugged into the bike / usb for the entire ride to use maps, music, contacts ect? Thank you for this video and for not rushing through the setup process to quickly. 😊
Hey thanks for the note. I am an old man, so like to try and keep this stuff as well paced and specific as I can. Yes, unlike car versions of CarPlay, this is a wired system so will only work when plugged in. BUT for contacts and music, you can still access those thru the Honda Propriety setup where you phone is listed a bluetooth connect device. It kinda clunky but works ok.
Thanks!
Glad to be of help!
