We want to welcome you to our Navigation Rules Of The Road series where Captain Pedro will go through each one of the COLREGS Rules Of The Road and explain what they mean, why they are important along with mnemonic phrases to help you remember the Navigational Rules Of The Road and prepare you for your captain license course and so that you can pass your USCG captain exam.
Many people are seeking to obtain their captain license to learn more about safety and in specific, boating safety and other wish to start their own charter fishing business and are seeking a charter boat captain license or most commonly referred to as a 6-pack captain license. The reason why it is called a captain license 6 pack is because this license allows you to take up to 6 paying customers on your vessel and is the most common license for charter fishing captains.
If you are wondering what does COLREGS stand for, it is the Convention On The International Regulations For Preventing Collisions At Sea. When obtaining your Captain’s License, you will be required to learn all of the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea. Collision avoidance is a very important subject when you are engaged in navigation at sea. These ship collision regulations were updated in 1972 and are still in effect internationally as collision regulations.
Now you might be thinking that you will never need these are you don’t plan on being the captain of a ship but the reality is that we are all involved in these conditions while boating and fishing and might not even realize it. If it makes it easier for you, think of the ship collision regulations as boat collision regulations.
In this series Captain Pedro will aim to ensure you understand the complex language of these rules and we will cover the COLREGS in depth going one by one through each rule and hopefully you can use this content as your 100 ton captain license study guide. Nowadays there are many online eLearning schools that are great for taking your captains license courses because they let you work at your own pace versus an actual classroom environment.
In this video, Captain Pedro breaks down COLREGS Rule 32. This rule is in the Sounds And Light Signals section. This rule covers the definitions for the following:
• The word whistle
• The term “short blast”
• The term “long blast”

    A little bit confused. Maybe I am missing something here. Understand that without the loop trick, dart can go backward through the shackle and harpoon can be lost. However, with the loop tie to the shackle/harpoon, how can the line goes through the shackle freely and allow the fish to run? Thank you!

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes! The line will run freely through the shackle and the harpoon shaft stays on the line. This is what you want, you want the harpoon shaft to not be attached bc if it is attached it can pull the dart out. The fish can run and the line will be coming out of the basket on the boat.

    • @lakershen
      @lakershen 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@pescatarianfishingThanks. I watched the video again. How can the line run through the shackle freely? It will be stuck at the loop which is tied to the shackle through the long line clip. I must be missing something here. Thank you.

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No that prevents the line with the dart from coming out of the shackle. If the line were to come out, you lose the shaft. The fish is running and the line is running through that shackle keeping the shaft loose on the line.

    what do you do if the anchor is in a rocky bottom

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So for anchoring on a rocky bottom I would recommend a grappling style anchor. Then I would set up the chain from the flukes of the anchor and run the chain down the shank of the anchor and place some zip ties there. This way, if the anchor were to get stuck in the rocks, the pressure from the anchor ball will break the tie wraps and pull the anchor out backwards. We cover this in detail along with proper anchoring techniques in our anchoring 101 video. Below is the link for that video. th-cam.com/video/F83iYNkc2HQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wRdNZ02ZLeUZkvFn

    How can i tie to my braid or main line?

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For sword fishing everything is connected using aluminum sleeves and is crimped on. From the main line which is braid off your reel you attach the wind on leader via a cats paw connection then at the end of the wind on leader you have a ball bearing swivel which is crimped onto the wind on leader on one end and the other end is crimped on to your bait leader.

  • @TobiasBollmacher
    @TobiasBollmacher 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Can you also use a knot to connect leader and braid for sword fish fishing?

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No because the leader is too thick to tie in a knot and if you were to tie it someway, it would not be as strong as a wind on and a knot won’t go through the guides of the rod. Remember the leader is 150ft long so if you can’t roll it onto the reel then you would have to pull the fish in my hand for all that distance. You might be able to pull in a small fish but it will be difficult and dangerous to try and attempt to pull in a big fish by hand. All that leader on the deck of the boat can create a serious situation if it gets tangled on someone’s leg and the fish takes off. Swordfish can dump a thousand feet of line off your reel in seconds as they dive back down.

    • @TobiasBollmacher
      @TobiasBollmacher 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@pescatarianfishing So how would you do it. Thanks for the explanation

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are welcome. I will go in order to try to make it less confusing. First you need to tie a Bimini twist know at the end of you main line. This loop is what you will use to attach your wind on leader. This video shows you how to tie the Bimini twist knot - th-cam.com/video/XHoe0a04e8M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AXHE4WH04OzpcX_l The. You will have to attach the wind on leader with a cats paw connection. This video shows you how to attach the wind in leader. th-cam.com/video/yigCePetgpA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qa3k_mcGOOsFGvjh Then you will need to follow the steps in the rigging video to attach your barrel swivel and the bait. This video shows you how to properly do it using the chaffing gear. th-cam.com/video/YE1cXIokqxA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hrPm1KNBhCpc6VRq Then you just attach the lights, clip on your lead and you are ready to go. I’m not sure if you have seen the entire swordfish 101 series that I have but I walk you through all of this, exactly what gear you need in your tackle box and boat and I show you how to rig bait for swordfish also. Are you talking about braided dacton line or something else? Do you have a link of the dacron you are using? Thank you!

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yes, regular dacron. this really helps identify it when its coming up in the water and the material helps it not slip in your hands. here is an example from Miami fishing supply. www.miamifishingsupply.com/tu2530orda.html

    Can you advise what lb test mono you use to connect to the lead? Thanks.

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I use 80 or 100lb test. You want to have it light in case you get hung up on the bottom. You want the lead to break and be able to retrieve everything else

    Great video’s Captain. I’m from Australia. We target squid & bottom dwelling fish in the ocean, but not at the depths you’re describing more like 20 to 40 feet. I’ve got a ECHOMAP UHD 95sv. Could this same effect be achieved by zooming in on the bottom.

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the support all the way from Australia! You can zoom and in 20-40 feet it might not distort that much but in the depths that we swordfish, if you use the zoom feature it will get very distorted. The shift feature basically excludes any other area that you do not select and the transducer solely focuses on the selected depth range. I would imagine that in 20-40 feet the zoom feature should work perfectly.

    I tried to set the LP drag and mark the reel as you did. My brand new LP's drags are very different from yours. It starts at 10, but only goes up to 20lbs. Then I did some research online. There are so many different ways to set drag. Preheat the drag or not, using spring scale, digital scale, or stick weight, put the reel on the rod, not put the reel on the rod, pull the drag slowly, pull the drag very fast, pull the drag working speed, etc. The way you set the drag has a huge impact on the drag readings. Besides putting the rod on a rod holder and pulling the line straight down, what exactly did you do to set your drag? Did you preheat the drag, did you pull fast or slow? Did you use a spring scale? I used a spring scale and pulled the line very slowly. Maybe that's why my reading was much smaller than yours. Thank you!

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You have to put the reel on the rod and pull straight down because the rod itself will also add drag to the fish. This is why is has to be on the reel and you pulling straight down. I did use a spring scale and I pulled very slowly so that I could get the reel right as the line started moving. One thing to note is that no two LP reels will be the same. If you feel that your drag is too little and that all the way up the reel only has 20 pounds of drag, you could adjust the wheel on the side of the reel and click it forward. Every click of the wheel up adds 3 pounds of drag and when you turn it down every click removes 3 pounds of drag. I would recommend adding some clicks and starting over. You really want to set it to 35lsh pounds but not that the reel can’t go anymore bc if you hook a large shark, you will never be able to slow it down. Sharks are a major bi catch when swordfishing. Then as a recommendation, I would set the wheel all the way back and count the clocks that you finally set it at. Then I would place a sticker on the reel. It happens to everyone, someone will turn that dial and then all your settings are off so if you know what number of clocks the reel was set to, you could bring it back to zero and clock it to that and be back in business.

      @@pescatarianfishing thank you so much for the detailed explanation. Your channel is so underrated and it will take off soon. Keep up the great work. One last question, do you preheat/warm the drag before setting the drag?

    • @pescatarianfishing
      @pescatarianfishing 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I never preheat the drags. The most important thing when setting though is that you place the reel in the rod and pull down on the line in the same fashion as the fish would pull to capture the drag pressure from the rod. Thank you very much for the support!

      Thank you very much! This year for the stone crab season, I am going to try and record more to show the viewers about stone crabbing in Florida. We are almost exclusive with stone crab here in Florida but it’s tough to record because we have very rough seas in the winter here. Lots of saltwater on the cameras and microphones.
