Wow, 1950s Edinburgh Caught in Colour on 9.5mm Cine Film
It's not often we get to see vintage cine film footage like this, colour filming on 9.5mm cine film, in Edinburgh, Scotland. A busy street scene on Princes Street with the traffic being directed by Police shows us a snippet of daily life in the late 1950s. Look at the double-decker buses with McEwan's Beer advertising, the vintage cars, the fashion! What an insight into this decade of time. Subscribe to see our other 1950s or 9mm film reels. Do you know any of the cars seen in this film footage?

I love it the rail lorry, police on point duty in princes street i maybe driving one of those buses
Hey Alastair! Oh thats wonderful Haha yes what a turn out that would be if you were driving the Buses Amazing! Thanks for your contribution to our Content we bring back to life!
Final street scene suggest may be a 1920s Fairground East Sheen area, Surrey…
Oh that’s great Thank you for shedding light on location, it’s not easy when films are not indexed Happy New Year & Thank You for your contribution
Nice film of a bygone era, thanks for uploading. Regards John
Thanks for your feedback John & Happy New Year to you
Heads up that Aliquippa is in Pennsylvania.
Great thanks for solving this really amazing & your contribution is valuable info Happy New Year & thanks for your interest
HARD HARD WORK
Absolutely.
That generation knew what putting in a honest days work was all about.
True, we are very fortunate today.
Do you have a darkroom lab splicer you could sell me?
Hey unfortunately not! We don’t use a darkroom as all our media we restore is processed already! Have you tried eBay? Good luck with your search & thanks for your interest Stay Tuned for more
@thecinefilmfactory thanks. No luck on eBay. These are hard to find.
where was this back in the day? Anyone know?? thanks
Be interesting to know!!! Maybe when Ai advances further it will be able to tell us locations from a image
There is a mistake, my friend, it is the trajineras in the lake in the state of Xochimilco, Mexico.
Ah great thanks for the correction Amazing
Amazing 👏
Looks like hemp.....
Hi Simon what a wonderful story, what a day that must have been for you at that boot sale and the feeling of having that memory coming flooding back. I started filming in 8mm way back in 1960 and got hooked immediately then progressed to 16mm. Now some 64 years later my interest in the format has been rekindled, thanks in part to your channel. keep up the good work. Kind regards John in Surrey.
Hey it was indeed a very surreal experience! Excellent you’ve certainly followed the filming trend through the years excellent Keep Filming! Thanks for interest in what we do
Hi Simon great video, nice to see you son Louie taking an interest in an old format, he is a credit to you, cheers John
Thank You
This restored video sure has a wealth of Historic Value to show the following Generations how crops were harvested with Real Horse Power and a lot of Manuel Labor. Farmers today still work long hours but most have Air Conditioned Large Tractors and many other Labor saving types of equipment. Farmers then and now keep food in our Grocery Stores, how fast we would starve without our Large Farms which feed Millions of People.
True, it's good to be able to share footage of what farming labour really used to be like.
Great footage, I have an image of my grandfather ploughing with 3 horses, probably in the early 1930s. I wish it was a cine film.
Ahh, that would be so good for you to have.
Hey The back arm of my Siemens 2000 projector doesnt lock in position properly. Do you have any solution ? Thank you
@@cosminz100 Hmm it’s multi lock position have you tried pushing the arm in to release the lock?
Awesome work!
The colors of the harvest are so beautiful and vibrant
That was super, thanks for saving/showing.
Glad you enjoyed it.
They are making silage to feed cattle . The steam engine is running a chopper blower that chops the crop and blows it up a pipe and into the silo .
A man in the know!
Great ...peaceful times not rushing...
Life is certainly fast-paced today!
Sound's not very good..................... only joking.
I found that using film cleaner on older acetate film actually detaches some of the emulsion in places, giving it a raindrop effect, so I chose not to go through with the cleaning process and rather scan the film as is. Curious to hear your experience with this.
It’s all about trialling different methods! Different film here today react differently to different cleaners on the market it’s a lengthy time consuming process with no quick fix we’re afraid! Our advise of 20 years is trial lots of solutions available online to see which works original cellulose dependant! Thanks for your interest in what we do here
Sileage.
YES! I am 16 and I just love this. Spent the last 9 months leaning about analogue photography and shooting film it's just so much pleasing than digital. I'd love a 16MM film camera and a film projector. I'm so glad you also showing your son all this tech as well! If I wasn't born in this digital age I would of loved to be a film editor.
That’s fantastic ! Well done you if you ever need any advice just let us know & if we get donated a 16mm projector we will let you know! Keep up the experience with 16mm Film & Thank You for following us
A wonderful video, hardworking men and some lovely horses, a very good watch thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Not asylum seeker in sight either, much safer society too, no stabbings in those days, how our politicians have betrayed us.
Very good real character
Thank you so much for sharing this, I have listened to my father and grandfather telling me how farming was back then, it's great to actually be there just for a few minutes.
That's a lovely comment, thank you.
pas des fainéants ...
This looks like north of England or Scotland to me, with the style of the horse harness. With lightweight harness with front of cart saddle turned up in a lip and that type of tipping cart. Varieties were a lot taller then, the sheaves would be hand tied after sail reaper had cut them, before the day of reaper binders. The whole crop was being put through a chaff cutter driven by Fowler traction engine. By the look of the building is this whisky production! If that’s right this would of been barley. What ever it’s a fantastic bit of film👌
Thank you, you sound very knowledgeable about farming. We will have some more farming footage available soon too.
@@thecinefilmfactory I am beginning to think this may be a crop of flax, grown to produce linen cloth. Though they did not appear to dry in sheaves in the field before processing. Unless someone can tell me different!🤔
Really interesting video that has inspired me to dig out all my VHS tapes and old cine films ! MC
Excellent! Well remember we can transfer any of your cine films into digital for you :-)
An excellent piece of film - Educational - demonstrates the labour required and the amount of moisture and nutrients used producing straw.
Thank You for sharing your thoughts about this piece of film we brought to digital! How times change Thanks Again
I've not seen a Reaper since 1957
Glad to be able to share the footage with you,
Crops look so much thicker a fuller back then. Seems like we get a pittance of what they got back then. I know crop yields have risen since then but it just looks more
NO - The grain is 'The Crop' NOT the straw which would be burnt if allowed. Since world war two plant Breeders have continually produced more varieties that produce less straw and more grain. Wheat yields in the UK, (on average), have increased from 2.3 tonnes per hectare in 1926 to just short of 10 tonnes per hectare in 2015,
@@davidhorn6008 I’m not on about the straw, I was on about a clip in the video of a man harvesting his crop and it looked a lot thicker than today’s crops. As I said, I know this isn’t true as crop yields have risen since then, it just looks more. Thank you for your comment.
@@spencersanderson1894 O.K.
Way more today, not even close.
@@kirtflesher1603 I know I clearly say that, just looks like it, learn to read.
Very quiet in those days.
😂
This is “incredible footage”? Back in my day, this was 10 years ago 😅 not some ancient hidden found footage Jesus
Amazing feedback yes we think it’s incredible too so clear & vivd in its digital transfer form! Thank You for your comment, if you haven’t already we have lots more in our channel with more coming
How I long for those days to return

Image search on the building mural came up with Mexico City.
Thanks, that's a good start.
Good strong colours, detail which you can get from 16mm, of course.
@@FilmbuffWSussex The Beautiful depth of colour 16mm could produce! Unfortunately today not all 16mm films look like this example! Thanks for reaching out!
The other double deck I can remember was the Amstrad double decker. These were not particularly well made machines. I think the best, most solid recorders were made in the 80's and early 90's. The first VCR I ever used at home was my dad's N1500 [Philips VCR] system back in the mid 70's, before VHS and Beta existed. My dad also had U-matic equipment in his factory, which was a very high quality system. In the end I settled on Betamax as a consumer system, and continued using it up until the transition to digital. Side by side I could see a definite edge in picture quality over VHS, so I rarely ever used the VHS format myself.
Hi Richie, Thanks for your contribution! Could agree more on build quality. Yes of course, Amstrad made a double decker along with as mentioned in the video Baird & the Orion we feature here in the video! On to Betamax great quality format however in 13 years now of transfers in the UK serving thousands of clients probably only ever had a handful literally count on 1 hand how many enquires for Betamax hence that’s the only format we do Not transfer here Thanks again for watching our content & hopefully subscribing to our channel so your kept in the loop of our content as soon as we release it, Have A Great Weekend the CFF Team
@@thecinefilmfactory Yes, you are correct, I rarely get any Betamax to transfer and even less V2000, but I do see a lot of 8mm/Hi8, MiniDV and occasionally Digital8, and obviously VHS, I also get U-matic and Betacam as well, but that is because I worked in broadcast environments when I was younger, and so still get called on occasionally by people who know me. I am retired now, so just do it more as a hobby rather than a much needed job, it keeps the grey matter ticking over. It's funny to think that when I was younger and got to work in a broadcast environment, I wanted so badly to use the kind of recorders at home that the broadcasters use, I was so envious of their quality, but they were prohibitively expensive, hence my choice of Betamax for home use. It was the closest I could hope to get to anywhere near broadcast quality at the time. Now you can pick up used broadcast equipment on places like eBay for peanuts compared to their original retail prices.
@@richiereynGreat interesting career you had over the years ! As you can image we have seen hundreds actually into the 1000s over the years of the dreaded Hi-8 tape, I say that because if haven’t checked out the video we made about these a few years ago now highlighting the deteriorative state we see them in more & more today! Check it out here & Thank You for contributing to our wonderful world of transfer th-cam.com/video/p3oxDb4GIec/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9_jRkxriBYFNiHVn

My guess is sorghum.

It looks like oats to Me
I’m thinking this could be flax, for linen production.
Sorghum, that is why they are putting the stalks into a press, to get the juice for sweetener
Love seeing the fashions -- I was young in the seventies, so these styles are what I and my friends wore. The young mens' suits, with their wide flared pants and super wide lapels, were typical. The bridesmaids are wearing the same popular peach colour I wore as a bridesmaid at my sister's wedding in that decade. The bride's dress is inspired by Princess Anne's (first) wedding dress of 1973 with its medieval sleeves. And floppy wide hats with gauzy ribbons were a trend, and often found their way into bridesmaid ( and sometimes bridal) outfits; I used to own a hat in exactly the same style as these bridesmaids hats, in beige.
