Utah Desert Landscapes | Southwestern Road Trip - Part 1
Some of my favorite southern Utah locations -
In fall of 2023 I was joined by friends and fellow photographers Andy, Hougaard, Marshall, and Sarah for a photography road trip around some of my favorite locations around southern Utah and northern Arizona. Featuring large format film, digital, and aerial photography, this road trip had it all with good times and great photo opportunities abound.

A Black & White Negative Film Comparison | TMax 100 vs Delta 100 vs Acros II
Really enjoyed the video! Gave me lots of inspiration for my trip to Lofoten next year.
Great comparison
This may be a controversial opinion, but I think Velvia is quite overrated. The colours are awesome, but only if you get the exposure just right. You can’t overexpose it, you can’t underexpose it, and its too slow for me. I was lucky enough to get a 35mm roll of it once (that’s another problem, it’s way too hard to get), and when I was shooting it I was really looking forward to the results. After processing, I found that nearly every photo had a bad exposure or was too blurry (I had to handhold the camera). I don’t think I’ll ever use slide film again, because of the speed and the dynamic range.
What dates in October were you photographing in Southern Utah?
Hi Rita, this was around the third week in October if I remember correctly
@ the second week I did the Nebo loop and the one north of there. I heard southern Utah if timed right is magnificent. I’d like to try it sometime, but by the third week I’m in the Smokies. Thanks for replying I sure appreciate it!
Really, I have grown to love all the photographic possibilities of a beautiful Autumn in Utah! Such a stunning landscape!
@@ritagray3716 You’re absolutely right, I always feel like I haven’t had enough time to enjoy the fall season while it lasts, and so many unexplored locations - but I suppose that just leaves more for next year
Outstanding! Love these compositions and you do a great job!!!
Wow Chris you captured wonderful images in this vid! So happy I came across your channel!
The opening shot I knew exactly where you were behind Ouray. I noticed the overhang was removed on that section of road this year when I went. Nothing like Colorado in the fall for sure. Thanks for sharing, nice pics.
I shoot tmax 400 at 250 to get shadow detail and get more contrast in the shadows off the toe, then shorten development 15% to protect the highlights. From there, I can pull down shadows if desired but start with detail and contrast and can darken highlights. Massive dev app does all the computations for me.For me, tmax has a fine grain in 35 mm, in 645, it's barely there, in 67, it looks digital to me. I have never tried delta 100 but love acros for portraits as you found. It is an ortho panchromatic film and has a wonderful look with skin tones for me as a portraitist. I also like tmax 400 at 1000 for street giving me minimum 1/250 at f/11 with 4' to infinity zone focus and with aperture priority on a voigtlander 28m,, stunning glass for point and shoot onmy nikon fe, fe2, f100, 6.
Enjoyed this ... thanks for taking the time to put it together. What do you scan the negs on and what software do you use convert to positive? Would ove to see some slide vs neg comparisons with same subjects.
4:20 ahhaa you dont take photos under sunlight nor portraits on E6 film.
this was such a great kit. i have a toyo omega view with a gossen luna pro f light meter. the notebook is really cool ill be looking into that. that small grey card is actually so nice, i carry a full sized 8x10 cardboard grey card. thats actually so cool and i insta-bought it on amazon. that short 3d printed monorail is genius and ill be stealing that idea haha. need to figure out how to carry this thing as efficient as you are.
So you see that red small house across from the shack. I air bnb Ed there. That shack is actually sewer processing plant! A local told me and the building next to it is jail and police station !!! Very interesting!
Thanks for the great video! But I don't think f/45 is the right aperture setting because the diffraction effect will degrade the image quality. If you need everything to be in focus, f/22 with some tilting is a better choice.
Gorgeous works👍
wonderful images
You should have thousands of views and thumbs up for your videos...
It’s good to see a new video, but better to hear about your personal life successes. I was married when I was in school and anxious to get through as fast as possible so I took 18 credits…BUT I did not have a job at the time. Your work and school load says a lot about your work ethic, that’s a grind. As far as that first frame, I’m not sure what the issue could be-maybe air bubbles? I’ve had similar issues in the rolls I develop at home, but I don’t get them as often when I give the tank a firm bump on the bottom and tap the side with the side of my counter top after I agitate.
I just got a baby graflex. This instruction was exactly what i needed to get a "feel" for what to do. I got a 120 roll back and I'm ready to go. Thanks from idaho falls.
so what if you do not have an empty box yet?
Hi James, what I did in the beginning was to just wait until I had an entire box of film ready to ship and then sent the whole thing to the lab. If that is not an option then Harman actually sells an empty box and inner liner kit, although it ships from the UK: harmanlab.com/products/sheet-film-empty-three-tray-box-and-bag Lastly, I've been told that some labs will actually accept your film holders with the film still loaded in them if you're willing to ship those, but I'd contact the lab you intend to send them to and make sure they're ok with that first.
appreciate the work here, but unfortunately this comparison is not quite bang on, because each stock isnt exactly true to box speed, and chemicals used will have an impact on the negative also. They have different tone curves also. You will get an idea, but any alterations to any of the above would change the result.
Thanks Steve, I've since learned that lesson and can agree that has been my experience as well.
@@ChrisDarnell you settled on a film and Dev process now? I stick to delta 100 and id11 as I don’t do home dev .. i exposure with n- or n+ in mind. Everything is done with scanning in mind.
Hi Chris, enjoy your videos and all your content. I just got at auction an Omega View 45C (like your Toyo 45). Been following your Toyo 45 adventures. I am a 77-year-old who works out of my car mostly, but anxious to learn to use the Omega. Do you still have the Toyo? I don't see it anymore. Keep up the videos.
What a great, detailed comparison! I know you touched on it a couple of times, but one of the stand-out differences for me was the higher acutance and detail resolution of the Velvia. I shoot 120 and am in Europe, so shortages haven’t hit me yet. But I could be tempted to order a few multi-packs for the freezer!
Realise this is an older video, but did you publish those 3D files anywhere ?
I have the latest photoshop for windows but I can't adjust the fuzziness/range when I select shadows since they are disabled...
So excited to see a new video.
Great video and some really nice shots .... loved the 4x5 shot , that worked out so well given the sun was bright and in front of camera ... Excellent !!
Awesome to see a new video Chris. All the shots were incredible but the drone shots were out of this world.
Really great video Chris. I always look forward to seeing your latest adventures and your photography.
Great work Chris! Love the leaf litter. Craig
Got the warm fuzzies watching this Chris, what a trip that was, and all the memories came roaring back. Really glad you’ve found time to put it together, it’s a lovely video and you got some awesome images. Hope all is well with you, really looking forward to the next video
really great work my friend. especially the drone series at the end. makes me want to charge mine up and get it out there!
Hey Chris. Happy you are back. I really love the soft light (overcast shots). Those tones are really hard to find anywhere else. Keep it coming. Thanks for sharing the trip.
This one was an absolute treat Chris. Really enjoyed your opening set of images. The textures, tones, and contrast were incredible. Just love Utah!
Beautiful Chris
Nice one! Great photos with a well put together video. You're getting to be quite professional. Love the twilight images, so rich in colour. Keep up the good work. Yours is one of the only channel I look forward to watching. 😊
Simply amazing.
Great photos!
Great shots, Chris. Your aerial views are sublime! Can't wait for the next installments.
Been looking forward to this and certainly well worth the wait. Sue and I enjoy camping near the Butte. And now…it's almost color season. Well, almost.
drone shots are epic, next time make more shots also from ground level. I like to support small channels, you have a lot of potential.
This is awesome! The black and white with the person out on the flattop rock was breathtaking! Can’t wait to see the rest.
Dam that looks good! Looking forward to the rest of the trip!!!
.....we are waiting for the next videos!!
The last photos, those taken from above wonderful!!, it doesn't seem like reality, it seem like something truly unreal, unnatural, very cool!! thanks teacher Chris!!
Epic drone shots
Cool shots Chris! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your adventure. 😎
Hi Chris, Love your work! is there any resources/books you'd recommend to get up to speed with Large format?
Cool camera Chris! Glad to see another video from you! Looking forward to Zion!
Great video and great shots!
Nice photo, but i agree with you. Just not quite there as an image i would want to come back to look again and again.
