Steam Launch Engine on Test
This is a compound engine, which means that although it has two cylinders (high and low pressure), the steam is only admitted to one of them - the high pressure. When it has done its work there, the exhaust goes to the larger low pressure cylinder and does some more before finally being exhausted. The cylinders on this engine are 2.5" and 4" diameter with a common stroke of 3"". It is big enough to power a 21ft boat.

Steam boating on Windermere

This video was shot in 2019 and shows my steam boat heading upstream from Newby Bridge into the main lake. The engine has two cylinders each 2.5" bore and stroke and was home built. The boiler (also home made) works at a maximum pressure of 250 psi.

This a home made two cylinder steam boat engine having a first test run on compressed air. The cylinders are 2.5" diameter by 2.5" stroke and as the engine is double acting, this gives four power strokes per revolution. The engine should be powerful enough to drive a 20ft boat at 6knots, which is more than enough for most inland waterways and lakes in the UK.

Our dear old Labrador Rosie, broke a shoulder bone in 2017 and will have a limp for the rest of her life. She still enjoys short walks (especially if it passes a pub where she can share a packet of crisps and some beer with me!) but what she really loves is swimming - and muddy ponds surrounded by duck poo are much preferred to the nice clean hydro-therapy pool!

This video was shot during the 2019 'Puffing a 'Wey' steam boat rally. This is an annual event held at Dapdune Wharf, which is a National Trust property in Guildford. The Steamboat Association of Great Britain is always very grateful to the National Trust for allowing them to hold this event and use their facilities on site. For the technically minded, the boat is driven by a twin cylinder stea...
First steaming of 5" gauge Britannia Pacific

This video dates back to 2011 when my locomotive had its very first steam test. In case anyone was wondering, the large pressure gauge on the boiler was there to check the small one in the cab! This engine took more than 2500 hours to build.

This is the very pretty engine belonging to Mike Bell, which powers his beautiful steam launch 'Michelle'. It is a copy of a design dating back to circa 1895 by the LIFU (Liquid Fuel engineering Co.) but actually built in 2017. It is a compound (where the steam is used twice in successive cylinders). The cylinders are 2.5" and 5" diameter and have a common 4" stroke. When delivered the engine h...
A Britannia Pacific in Sussex !

A video shot from one of the passenger cars of my 5" gauge 'Britannia' locomotive running at Beech Hurst miniature railway near Haywards Heath in Sussex. The engine was home built and was completed in 2011 after about 2700 hours work. Since then it has run well over 700 miles and given rides to thousands of passengers. The biggest load hauled to date has been 17 adults (including the driver) wh...

Twin cylinder steam engine 2.5" bore and stroke. Three drum water tube boiler supplies steam at up 250 psi, although 50 psi will suffice for a normal cruising speed of 5mph. In this video the engine is just idling while the boat is tied up . The exhaust steam from the engine passes to a condenser outside the hull and returns to the feed water tank via the air pump (seen on the left of the engin...

Taken on the Sharpness to Gloucester canal 02-09-2017. Steam launch 'Lady Amanda' is an 18ft GRP hull with twin cylinder steam engine and three drum Yarrow type water tube boiler. Also fitted are a vertical steam feed pump and a chain driven condenser extraction pump (air pump). All machinery constructed by the author of this video.

Taylor twin cylinder steam launch engine having a test run on compressed air. Stephenson's Link reversing gear. 2.5" bore and stroke cylinders. Should run at around 500 rpm on 150 psi steam pressure and is intended for an 18ft boat. Built by John Richardson 2012-13.
it's ticking over nicely,, even on air,, it will run even better on steam..
Very nice!!
Thats a lovely twin. Is it based on a Taylor twin, or?
This is my dream to own one
What a beautiful engine
Glorious

Super !!!
It's like a clock smooth to listen to.
Excellent!! Looks, sounds, and runs great. Thanks for showing us!
Gorgeous, is it your design or a published one?
Fabulous! I wonder how many horsepower this can produce?

So Lovely to hear the exhaust note! It's a shame this sensory aspect is lost in the marine application when installed with a condensing exhaust! ..and if only a 2way valve could give option of atmospheric exhaust!?,.. to onlookers whom have 'locomotive expectations' ( as i once did)
One of the joys of watching steam locomotives in action is to hear them speak. As you say, it's a pity that marine engines can't do the same, although if you were standing on watch beside one for four hours at a time, twice a day for five months, as I once did, I expect you'd pretty soon wish for some peace and quiet!
Hello sir
That's one very sweet running engine! A first class job!
in short - poetry in motion
I’ve seen you pass by our house on the Wey at Send 💕
I çan only imagine what the scale speed of this would be...
very nice loco you can never have too much steam. My regulator is a ball valve and it does not like closing slowly, i can do it but its not easy. What size injectors have you fitted? mine a no4's Bri
I also have a ball valve on the regulator, I extended the cab regulator to sit over the tender. This makes it a little easier to close/open the regulator a little bit at a time. I have a pair of lifting injectors no4's, they work very well - maybe too well !!
Do you blow tubes on the midwatch?
Hi there Hank, I only just picked up your comment and no, I don't have the facility to blow tubes, so all the boiler gets in the way of a clean is a handbrush applied through the firehole door after every steaming. With good coal, properly fired, there is very little soot and just doing this will get me through the season. Every winter when the plant is laid up, I remove the covers on the boiler and give it a good hoover out. Best regards, John.
@@steamchief1 That plant of yours is gorgeous there chief, you must be very proud of it. I can only dream I had a steam launch, but alas, too old and lame, but as a young man I did steam naval boilers with superheat and got to go 'round the world doing that so I have no complaints- except blowing tubes on the midwatch, dreadful necessity, and the topside afterwatchers hated us but, had to be done...☺
Just love it!
I like your plant setup. Beautiful little Taylor you have there.
Is there a permanent cut off of steam in a double acting compound engine?
Hi there, this engine is actually a twin cylinder simple expansion type not a comound but the answer is the same anyway: with Stephenson's valve gear, the point of cut-off can be varied from full (about 75% stroke) right down to nothing in both forward and backward gear. I usually run my engine at around 40% which gives better economy but it still runs smooth. Compounds are not usually run on such short cut-offs as this because the steam is being used twice anyway, so you need a biiger chaarge to start with. Hope this helps.
A nicely detailed Brit, and sounds sharp too. Good to see one with the BR1D tender.
Thanks for your comments - I too have always preferred the big tender versions - they make the locomotive look so much beefier.
what make is the engine
Hi there, the engine is a Taylor with twin high pressure cylinders 2.5" X 2.5". Built from castings with some modifications of my own to the valve gear.

Apologies to anyone who now requires a neck brace after watching this with their head turned sideways! I can build a steam engine but have no idea how to change the orientation of a video.
