Here are videos from my Berklee College of Music class the "LA Studio Ensemble".
"KINGS" LA Studio Ensemble Berklee College of Music
This is the Steely Dan song "Kings" from their debut album. I always loved this one, so I wrote up a chart and we recorded it in my LA Studio Ensemble that I teach at the Berklee College of Music. I gave the chart to the band two weeks prior and instructed them to listen to the record and learn the parts.
Berklee professor Mark Wessel has the Advanced Ensemble Recording Techniques class that records my ensemble. On this day the engineers and our drummer Kristyna arrived at 8am, the rest of the band and vocalists at 9am. By 10:25 we had the take.
In this performance nothing was tuned! No Melodyne no auto tune. Pure talent! Here are the specs:

Just WOW.
Thanks Wesley much appreciated! Marty
Love the drummer................... she spot on . Is she single
Pretty good. But Jack O'Connor's delivery of Elliot Randall's solo was freaking EPIC.
Yes I agree Jack's a great player. Thanks for taking the time to post this. I will tell him.
Nailed that guitar solo!
Thanks 7and5 much appreciated, Marty
Nicely done!
John L comments are so appreciated thanks Marty
Whoa! Ballpark walls mean nothing to you guys, you hit it out!!! Thank you!!! 😊
Thanks for the comment much appreciated Marty
Awesome. 8 years later...I hope that these young people have found success after school.
Actually many of them have! Thanks for the comment, Marty
awesome!!!
Once again thank you! Marty
love it!
Thanks Thomas. The song "Kings" from album 1 will be mixed soon!!
OMG. So good. And I've been 15 feet in front of Donald Fagan at a Steely Dan concert. It is also one of my favorite songs. And the musicianship was beyond first class for everyone involved, including the recording engineer. Well done!
Wesley this is the first SD song that Jeff Porcaro and David Paich played on. We in the valley were blown away these 2 guys were on it. That always stuck with me so I wanted to do a version with my class
Wondeerful
Helen lead the charge .... amazing
Ya Helen is a star. She is doing very well post berklee
The lead singer is good, and he'll gain real success when he learns to cover his vocals in a thick patina of filth. You can't sing this song sweetly. It's not a sweet song. The rest of the band rips. Keep it up!
Thanks for the comment. David Stewart the vocalist is doing quite well, living in LA and doing a lot of musical director gigs for other artists. His band Migrant Motel is releasing music too.
Let's see, a wolverine ate up some girl named Annie Dale... I hate when that animal attack kinda stuff happens.
Okay, not sure what that means. But thanks for the comment. Marty
Damn the talent in that room.
Thanks mucho for the comment! Marty
Shout out to the horns on My Old School. Excellent all around cover,😊😊
Thanks TonyStone! Marty
Damn these kids are good
Music Man thanks for commenting. Much appreciated! Marty
Watching this incredible performance makes me appreciate that great song even more.
Thanks Walter, I am doing the song "Kings" from album 1 next week, video to follow!!
Nice!
Thanks Art!
everyone is amazing especially the drummer keeping it all together
Thanks Relax! I agree, Marty
Wow. It's one thing to read a horn chart, but I'd love to know how the drums (or the lead guitar!) are notated!
There were horn and vocal parts, with a master rhythm. The rhythm section shedded by ear and learned the parts that way. I gave them the charts 2 weeks in advance and a link to a YT video of the song. Drums were in at 8am, the rest at 9am, line checks and sounds were done by 9:45. We started tracking at 9:45 finished at 10:25. Marty
@@martywalsh4427 Fantastic. BTW, I am a friend and former bandmate of recent Berklee president Roger Brown.
ya Roger and I are big pals, I have not seen him in quite som.e time though.
Great job, great voice, great musicians - but I prefer the original - and to those who say she was better than Grace, remember one thing - high end recording capability back then likely doesn’t measure up to the basic stuff available today.
Nobody can touch Grace or the original. That's why we changed the arrangement. Thanks for the comment!
I had the Mad Dogs album back in college in the 1970s and have been a huge Joe Cocker fan since then. Absolutely love this! I can picture Joe and his spastic actions while singing these tunes! Love the whole concert - I wish I could sing like you all! Bravo!!!!!!
Me too the greatest tour ever!
Chills!
Thanks Nancy I agree with you! Marty
Well done. The vocals are actually more clear than the original. 🎉
Thanks mucho Barbara, Marty
That was great!
Thanks for the comment and I agree! Marty
👆
The weak link in almost all the Steely Dan tribute bands is the drummer they never get the feels right this drummer is a stand out
Absolutely. And Helen De LA Rosa is just that.
BRAVO!! Donald and Skunk are proud to hear this, make no mistake.
I heard that Gary Katz has seen it
If anyone recognizes it, what is that compact console/surface George is mixing on?
I have no idea, who knows with George he could have designed it haha
@@martywalsh5348 I hope not, lol! I could never afford his gear!
What is George doing the mix on?
The original session of September. He brought the files to Berklee.
I’m asking if anyone knows what the console or surface is that he’s doing the mix on?
Great .. also see the Leonoid and friends version
Thanks Phil and yes many people have mentioned that other version to me which is obviously excellent
I close my eyes and I swear that could be Skunk Baxter on the guitar. Awesome cover.
Thanks Jeff! Much appreciated. Marty
Tremendous!
Thanks Jerry I agree! Marty
This just warmed my heart. Hope you all are living amazing lives.
Tight!
Thanks Alan
Some very distinctive vocalists at work here, and the band is perfection. No bigger thrill than hearing a classic song performed this well live!
I lost some if these. I had put up years ago and have to repost.
@@martywalsh3684 Thanks for this one. I'm old enough to remember loving the Ray Charles' version in early 1962.
Oh, man, Marty, you and your students are just way more fun than the laws allow! Thank you one and all for this show.
Very nice vocal harmonies
Thanks JW. Much appreciated! Marty

Thanks so much! Comments appreciated. Marty
Drummer is spot on as well as rest
She sure is! marty
Absolutely love the brass rhythm section!
Fantastic cover!!!
Thanks James!
The thing with My Old School is that every section plays a key role in the song. Take one section away, and the song falls short. But when every section is ‘ON’ the song delivers. Every section was spot on and it sounded great.
Thanks so much for the compliment. Much appreciated! Marty
slower tempo?
Maybe, never A/B'd them.
We were so busy reading Ayn Rand back then that it took me until decades later to understand the reference with the band's name.
I'm 52 years old. This song was very popular when I was at Georgetown University from 89 to 93. 😊
Glad you could reminisce Andrea! Marty
Love it!!! You guys killed it 👏 🙌 👌
Thanks Rich comments much appreciated! Marty
Faaaaabulous! ❤️
Thanks GP Handman. Much appreciate comments. Marty
Better than the original!
Thanks Fiddling! Much appreciated. Marty
