    The is one of the best covers of a DF vocal that I’ve heard. The band is so obviously good here that I wanted to single out the singer first - doing it very much his way.

    Fun fact: This song was the first Steely Dan recording to feature drummer Jeff Porcaro (just 19 years old at the time). My wife and I first noticed Jeff drumming on TV's "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" in the late summer of 1971, mostly because he looked young enough to be a member of The Partridge Family. On Sunday March 19, 1972, we got to see 17 year-old Jeff Porcaro at a Sonny & Cher concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The local Gazette newspaper reported that it was the highest-grossing concert to date in the city's history.

      @@martywalsh5348 In the Toto Encyclopedia Jeff explains that he took way less money ($400. a week) to join Steely Dan than he was making with Sonny & Cher ($1500. a week), just for the opportunity to play with his favorite band at the time.

    • @blueshorecreative3146

      wow, that's all very interesting. Jeff was an incredible drummer. I guess Steely Dan wouldn't have hired him otherwise. But SD were making less money that 🌽 Sonny and Cher, so they had to budget. I would like to see a pie graph of 1. People who were satisfied with a Steely Dan concert vs 2. People who were satisfied with a Sonny and Cher concert.

    • @andyinoregon
      @andyinoregon หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@blueshorecreative3146 Jeff explained further in The Toto Encyclopedia that at $400. a week he was the highest-salaried Steely Dan member, because Becker & Fagen were only drawing $250 each per week (of course they were also receiving songwriting royalties, split just two ways). He was so good on their 1974 "Pretzel Logic" album tour that Jeff became the featured studio drummer on their next album, "Katy Lied," and that got him the gig in late 1975 on Boz Scaggs' Grammy-winning album "Silk Degrees" -- and all of this before the age of 22.

My wife and I were lucky enough to see Steely Dan at the U. of Toledo in April 1974, just 2 months after their third album "Pretzel Logic" was released. They played that tour without a horn section or female backing vocalists, but were still remarkably faithful to their studio recordings. Not a criticism just a question - I presume this is a video made after the recording (e.g. 2:52 - surely there's no way people would be banging around in the next room while recording).
    The sound you create here is incredible - really capture the vibe - no mean feat. Again, no criticism as your lead has a really nice voice, but it really makes me appreciate what Donald's unusual voice brings to Steely Dan. Many hate it, until they get it... Even Donald lacked confidence in his own vocal quality (hence the first album).

Maybe it's me and studio technology is better than it once was. 🙂
