    This is brilliant. That's a whole lot of information for a 15 minute video. Bravo! Loved the analogies between the ark of the covenant and Noah's ark. Interesting that a jar of manna is in there too. "preserved seed in the ark" ("manna was like coriander seed").

    I enjoyed and learned from this discussion, but I have questions about the thesis concerning people of the past having a radically different apprehension of the place of the divine in the universe, based, in significant part, on different social and material arrangements. One example: we can go back at least as far as Xenophon's Memorabilia to see a (reconstructed or imagined) conversation between Socrates and his friend Aristodemus that bears on this issue. As you likely know, Socrates there attempts to convince the latter that gods exist and should be worshipped. At one point, after Socrates seems to be making progress in his case, Aristodemus says: But I can't *see* those supposed designers of man. In response, Socrates makes a wise and important analogy to the human soul, but the point is that there was nothing about his ancient material and social reality that made Aristodemus immediately sense that the world is "full of gods." The idea that "seeing is believing" is not a modern invention. On a more biblical note, I for one do not see much difference between the "belief in God" of Ecclesiastes and modern, skeptical agnosticism or a rather pale Deism.

    Fantastic. Listening to this and considering the image of marriage in relation to Christmas has me pondering the traditional identification of Psalm 45 (itself a Psalm of Royal Marriage) with Christmas Day. Cranmer in the Prayer Book mandates its use at mattins. "Gird thee with thy sword upon thy thigh, O thou most mighty".

    A interesting and wide ranging analysis. It is very clear that this episode signals the decline of David's rule and was a grave sin. I would be interested in though how you would describe the event - you don't think rape is the best term but you don't think it was consensual adultery.

    • @DobbotheGreat
      @DobbotheGreat 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      A related question would be, given all the biblical data, what do you think would be the most comprehensive account of the event? Who does what when and for what reason?

      @@DobbotheGreat Like you wrote - it's all in the Bible. And this in no way signals the decline of David's rule. Sin , specifically David's sin was central to his story, followed by sincere repentance - which endeared him to God.

    This all sounds very nice, but it ignores the reality of the current extent of the differences actually present in the academy, the church, and within western culture. I have been within the academy, and it is simply not possible to participate without a commitment to philosophical naturalism. That has been the dominant metaphysical/philosophical position for the last 200 years and I have seen even good, faithful people, and I myself, falling prey to that overarching pressure. It is also nearly impossible to stay within a progressive environment when one is orthodox. You are simply not allowed to question that ideology. There may be a very few people who can with grace stand up to those influences, but what I have seen for the most part is those who are faithful and orthodox, when in those environments, increasingly compromise. I have taught part-time at Fuller theological seminary, and I have watched with great grief as it has abandoned its former faithfulness. It was trying to be that mediating,non-sectarian influence that you talk about, but has been unable to keep from giving way to an increasingly progressive stance. I do agree with you to some extent. For example, I am in the ACNA, and I have been greatly heartened by a number of people across denominations who are seeking to retrieve Nicene orthodoxy. I have been reading with great appreciation Lutheran, reform, Baptist, Catholic, and Eastern orthodox writers. So I get what you say about sectarianism. Those writers that I have been listening to and reading all have in common a love for the Lord and a desire to learn with the ancient church. When one is worshiping the same Lord, fellowship is possible. It is difficult, if not impossible, when everyone is making up their own God. My former church was like that. You could believe anything you wanted, but you could never say anything was true.

    There are still some translations that say Saul asked, “Who IS that guy” about David after killing Goliath. Now, there are plenty of passages afterwards showing Saul’s insanity, and being demonized, and switching back-and-forth personalities, etc. And so that could be what’s going on here… but I think it’s something else going on. It could very simply be that when Ezra pieced the old Testament back together after the exile, some parts didn’t come together correctly. Try it this way: Remove 16: 14-23, and insert it between 18:1 and 18:2. Now read 16-18 through THAT way, and it flows perfectly!

    This was an interesting listen, especially as you drew attention to various political dynamics, such as inferring that Haman held a deceitful posture toward the king. (And it's nice to hear someone argue within a particular tradition and honoring its contributions rather than casting it aside completely.) I am not familiar with the various commentaries you mentioned here, so I hesitate to offer any extended comment. This is not intended to argue against your interpretation, but maybe it might add something to it: have you heard Keller's interpretation of this passage ("The Man the King Delights to Honor")? Keller interprets the refusal to bow through the lens of wisdom literature and sees Haman as the embodiment of Proverb's warning that pride goes before a fall (a "case study" in pride). This reversal of fortunes between the humble man (Mordecai) and the prideful man (Haman) would also echo the reversal of fortune in Joseph's story. And, as was characteristic of his preaching, Keller adds Christological themes wherein the cross is the main exemplar of this dynamic: in Christ's death and resurrection, the moral fabric of the universe is perceived to be one in which the humble--defined as those who think of others rather than think of themselves--are exalted and the prideful are cast down. Those who act in their own interests at the expense of the community are cutting against the grain of reality itself.
