Ep 84 - When Your Dream Makes You Puke
If there is an obstacle between you and the adventure of a lifetime, this episode is for you. "Change is fast but transition is slow and things rarely go as we expect. Three days ago we stuffed our duffles and caught a jet stream to our new floating abode. This unlikely dream journey is already six years old." Fresh takes on 2014 when our family of seven moved aboard s/v Fezywig.
Welcome to the What Could Go Right? Podcast. We’re your hosts: Erik Orton and Emily Orton. We talk about personal growth and sailing. In 2014, with little experience and less money, we bootstrapped a year on a sailboat with our five kids and it changed our lives forever. We tell the whole story in our book Seven at Sea. On this podcast, we want to help you go from fear to freedom one adventure at a time.

Hi Eric and Emily Great subject that really got me thinking about our past Christmas trees. This year we broke down and purchased our first fake tree. I don't know about tree prices in you area but here in southern California $ 200-250 for a 7' tree forced our decision. But our first was the best tree ever. While stationed in wuertzburg germany it was our first Christmas together. We lived off post in a little berg outside of town named eisengen. Having no car this posed a logistics problem on transporting our tree from the PX to our little 1 bedroom duplex 10 miles to eisengen. We convinced our taxi driver to strap the tree on top of his cab to make the trip home. Of course we tipped him well. That night setting up the tree and decorating it is one of our great life memories.we decorated with ornaments we bought from open markets in town sent to us by family and gifted to us by friends we had made while in country. 40 years later some of those ornaments still survive and are on our tree right now. It always brings back memories of those times how carefree and uncompleted life was back then. We didn't need anything but each other, that hasn't changed.

Ah, this is so great. Thanks for sharing! We lived in San Diego right after Covid and made the same decision to buy a fake tree. Glad to know we’re in good company! 😊

I thought I would let you know, while we were in France and Germany, we found that we could buy a phone chip for our phone for around $30 euros. This was much cheaper than paying for an international plan on our phone service. It included calls, texts and data for a month. It worked well for us.

I have struggled with my in-laws over holiday culture, I was expected to show up at all family functions with no concern of our own needs and if I wasn't able to show up due to needs at that season that was difficult, I was seeing as a bad daughter in-law or taking their Son away etc. Was never communicating if I tried to communicate to explain I was seeing as disrespectful. In-laws can be a great source of pain especially if the parent in-law doesn't value you and your needs. As a mother in-law I try to support my Son and daughter in-law the best I can by not demanding holidays or anything. Marriage is difficult enough between two people trying to figure out their lives I don't want to be the reason of conflict over family culture

Hi Ortons! Thanks for sharing! We are a family of 6 that has been sailing on the Columbia River out of Portland Oregon over the past year with the goal of getting out on bigger waters for a longer adventure. We are now prepping to do just that. Awesome also to see what you’ve done with those experiences since then. About sailing specifically and the more generic ideas about following dreams and using a story context to live our best lives. Very inspiring! I’m a Don Miller fan as well! Looking forward to seeing more of the content you put out and figuring out how to share our own.

I think this is great advice for everyone not just young adult children. I quit my job and started my own business 3 years ago. I served seniors living in memory care communities and I worked with children teaching both communities how to build with LEGO. Within 2 days, all my clients disappeared ue to COVID-19. I don't know what the future holds, I do have a few ideas but I had to stop and just work on my art for at least two months. It was all I could do. It's only the past few weeks where I am able to look up and see what is next. Thanks for sharing.
