Al's Drum Hang
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 27 ธ.ค. 2022
Hi! I'm Al, a drummer, gamer, artist, and all around fun guy. I've been playing drums for about 35 years, and I've done hundreds of gigs, made plenty of mistakes, and learned a lot about the instrument. I'm here to help you be a better drummer, a better bandmate, a better musician, and a better businessperson. I'll be talking about gear, composing drum parts, preparing for and crushing gigs, and little tips and tricks I've picked up along the way.

Thanks for the sub and thanks for the kind words!
This is a great sounding set of drums! I've been looking at the Tama Superstar Classic vs the Yamaha Tour Customs and will likely pull the trigger on one of them. I don't have any stores in my area that have any available for play, however, so I'm trying to narrow it down via TH-cam. I've always wanted to see the Sweetwater store in person.....maybe I'll make the 600 mile roadtrip to look around and test them out in person. :) Does anyone in the comments have a recommendation to share? Pros and Cons sincerely appreciated.
I can't speak to the Tour Customs, but I can tell you that the Tamas are a very good investment. Hardware for both kits is superb. The Yamahas only come in 4-piece shell packs, so if you want a 6-piece like this one, you'll have to order add-ons. Also, consider the rim-style Tama suspension mount versus the Yamaha YESS mount, which works fine but is still technically a shell mount. other than that, it may come down to finishes and overall looks for you. Good luck!
The best yet that ive seen and ive seen many. 😊 Awesome job.😊
Thank you! 😊
I am very impressed with their durability and comfort.
Agreed. I bought 6 pair at the beginning of summer and by today (~70 gigs/rehearsals) they're still holding strong.
i have same one but blue color its awsome love the sound too
They're great drums for the money. Thanks for watching.
More good advice! I am not good about that AT ALL. 😢
Nothing's improved my drumming faster, or more, than incorporating metronome into practice.
I put mesh heads as rest head, with Remo Pinstripe batters.
Good tactic! Gives you a concert tom sound an d feel but protects those bearing edges.
it makes me chuckle when people purchase a new kit and complain about the heads not being great. Pros will immediately change out all of the batter heads to their liking and playing style. It's a given. Most of us change out the snare wires immediately as well. Sometimes the hoops on the snare----maybe die cast batter hoop triple flange on resonant side. All of the excellent kick drum head combos, again for your style of music and/or mic'ing. Make the kit work exactly for you. If you don't have the extra money, then you have to make the best of it.
I bought this kit used, and the previous owner who had barely played it had changed out most of the heads. I had to buy a couple of EC2s for the smaller toms to complete the set, and the snare definitely needed a new head - the stock batter was bottomed out when I got it. I agree that for most kits in this price range, you need to factor in the costs of new heads. If I had gotten the kit new with stock heads, I could have given an honest review of the stock heads - and I'm kind of glad I didn't have to. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful work and feel on the ride But.... can you play with your dong??? No one wants soft stuff...WE WANT ALL DONG BABY!
I got this kit in a different color and love it. Only other difference with mine is I also have the 13" rack tom. On the snare I have the Evans RC reverse dot and it eliminated most of the ringing. You only hear it now if you're really laying a stick hard into it.
I did get my snare into a sweet spot. I ended up ordering an S-Hoop for the batter side (I love those things) and it also sounds killer with my BFSD on it. 13"s are a weird beast for me. I love my 13" on my 13/16/22 Ludwig I would never run a 13" next to a 12" or a 14". Enjoy!
Nice video. I picked up the same kit with upgraded batter heads, rock and sock throne, required hardware for all cymbals and drum rug for $250 yesterday. Prior to all rhis, i had purchased a new 7 piece tama walnut birch kit for $3k. I want to tell you, as of now, i like the maple kit right off the bat more than the expensive kit. I find the walnut birch kit harder to get the sound out of them to my liking. Ill keep working at it, but im not a happy camper Consider yourself lucky doging a bullet bu getting that nice maple kit.
What a smoking deal! Enjoy!
😂😂
;)
It's an honor to be part of this list - thank you, THANK YOU! 🙏🏼 🥁
Thank YOU for being so watchable!
Great video! I am currently looking at a new kit, and the market is abundant with the 6 & 7 piece "intermediate/pro value kits". As best I can figure, they are great quality & sound for the price without jumping into the Profe$$ional lines. How do like the Tama Superstar vs the PDP? In my research so far, I have been leaning towards the Superstars or the Yamaha Stage (would love the Tours), and I always keep PDP and Gretch in the mix at the right deal. Thoughts? I lean to Yamaha Stage because they come with hardware, and my thought is to spend heavy on hardware and cymbals, but I do want the 7 piece to develop my skills all around the kit to promote movement and quickness etc., and I like more toms musically. Let me know your thoughts.
I find the SSCs to be a little sweeter sounding and feeling than the PDPs - nothing scientific at all, it's just a fizz I get digging into them that I don't get from that PDP kit. The PDPs feel sterile and generic in comparison, not nearly as satisfying to play. And my friend Kevin who has played both those kits agrees with me; he'd much rather share my kit than bring that one when our bands are on a bill together. As far as the Stage Custom vs. the SSC... you can always buy the add-on toms for the Stage Custom, but you'll probably be paying a similar price to a basic hardware kit if you do. So it really comes down to the sound you prefer. The latest Stage Customs are also very very good for the price; the birch shell is going to give it a different character to the maple shells of the SSC. It's going to come down to which sounds better to you. of course don't forget to look for used gear - that's how I landed this kit for an insane deal. Best of luck and thanks for watching!
What was the position of the overhead mics?
In the kit test you can see the right hand mic; they were set up to the 10 and 2 o'clock of the kit centered on the snare about 4 feet out.
Hi Al, I like your content. You really naied it with that video. Speaking for myself as a drummer i find me doing the most of it.
Thanks for watching!
Neil Peart took lessons. Well after many albums! He said it changed his drumming completely.
I took about a year of lessons soon after i started, and recently took a few from a friend of mine. In April I'll be headed to a masterclass with Todd Sucherman! It's never too late to learn something.
@@alsdrumhang Tood is good friends with my drum teacher! He said his masterclasses are awesome, and he is truly one of the nicest guys he has ever met in the industry. Have a great time!
Quality on venom custom signature is great!
I may order some signature sticks going into this summer season - not committed yet! but certainly looking to Scorpion for my stick needs this year.
What? Can you turn up??
HUH?!?!
Get a grip, Al. 😂
You're not my supervisor xD
The snare is it! Just got a few new ones, including my first COB. Picked up new heads and wires for all 3 snares yesterday.
Awwwww yeah new snare drum day! Gotta love it.
I've spent more on my hardware than my drums. Pedals=$
A top-shelf pedal costs more than an entire beginner drumset. Should tell you something!
Those cheap ones sound best when you make clap stacks, though! 😂
Not wrong! They *do* have some use!
I don't understand why mid level kits don't even include good heads. PDP top of the line kits, I believe, usually include DW branded heads, which I actually like very much. But seems like most of them have those Remo UT or similar. I guess they figure people are going to change them anyway for what they prefer?
Just another way to cut costs at the low end, is my guess.
I love this video!
Thanks man!
Great points! Ive seen some amazing and famous bands with great musicians make mistakes in concert! Everyone does it.
Exactly! We're all human, after all. It's the mark of a true pro to just carry on as if nothing happened.
@@alsdrumhang Eddie Van Halen said his dad gave him this advice in music: If you make a mistake, Just keep playing and pretend it never happened. Or, do it again and pretend you meant to do it!
Musta worked out okay for him@@Spagz 😁
Great advice. The only time I played with a band so far the bass player told me "what's going to make you a good drummer is that you actually listen to the band".
It's a great compliment to get, but I also feel bad that there must be so many drummers out there who *don't* listen to the band!
@@alsdrumhang good point!
Buy a micro kit problem solved at least it did for me
It's tempting, and I've seen some great deals on micro kits lately - but I think I'm interested only if it doesn't mean a drastic sacrifice of the sound.
@@alsdrumhang absolutely no sacrificing Sound I was very impressed with the Brooklyn micro and I got a heckuva deal on it I mean we’re talking 1400 bucks shiipped but this kit that I got came with a 14 x 12 not the 13 and the owner did re-cut the edges on the kick drum and the floor Tom two double forty fives that definitely made a difference
Sounds amazing@@ronaldwhite3836!
Tell that to the guitar player! 😂😅
No helping those guys, sorry😆
Great advice on getting the song in your head first. But obviously, Metronome is king.
Well, hey, I got step 1 down pat!! That's about it 😂
Only four to go XD
@@alsdrumhang luckily, counting to 4 has gotten to be a regular thing. 🤣🥁4️⃣
Given your line of work I should hope so!🤣🤣🤣🤣@@Spagz
I have a shed... lol It's finished/insulated and climate controlled, but it's an inconvenience. No urinal. 😂
I don't quite have the room for a shed. As Ferris Bueller said, "I have to envy yours!"
Knocking Lars 😂 . You ever fill in for Metallica? I think Bernard Purdy hid under the stage for them haha . What's better for drumming your TH-cam video or the countless drummers he got behind a kit .
Thanks for watching and for your opinion.
Preach brother!
You're the choir 😅
Wait.... I'm not supposed to destroy my drums at the end??? Wow. I'm going to save $$$ now!

Great investment and excellent value for the money. Highly recommended! Glad I helped with your decision, let me know how it goes.

I play several instruments and idk if I would describe drums as approachable. It will always be my favorite to play tho.
I think for folks who don't see themselves as having fine dexterity for guitar, piano, etc. it can be a more approachable instrument (and I definitely struggle with fine dexterity myself!) I truly believe it's in the mindset.
@@alsdrumhang I also 100% believe it is a mindset. At the same time I teach yoga and a lot of people barely have the dexterity to balance on one foot. I also dance and understand how uncoordinated some can be. If I was one of them I would be terrified to learn drums. I think this just reinforces how much of a mindset it is.
Great points about driving. I always wanted to play but never really tried. Then I sat down with a kit I kind of fell into. I pulled up a video in basic drum playing and tried playing the moneey beat. At first of course, awkward as hell. But even with a hand with only two usable fingers, in am hour or so I was playing the beat. I was hooked! "I could do this!". Bought a decent kit after that (the one I had was a horrible Frankenstein) for $300 with everything. So many purchases followed 😂😂😂 An hour was all it took.
Boom! Let's get to 500!! Great vid Al.
Thanks man!
Top drummers make videos about what top drummers do
I'll take the compliment!
Love that too!!
I think you may have forgotten about bluegrass bands. I would be appalled if I saw a bluegrass band with a drummer! LOL
Oooooookay, I GUESS you got me there xD
And I *did* say "MODERN" music...
Nobody Evers dances to the guitarist! (Or to bluegrass 😅)
My favorite modern band has no drummer.
