Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge (1991) Review
I actually played this game a long time ago as a little kid. It looks good, but the controls kinda ruined the experience for me, and probably for some other people, too. If it used the d-pad or the nunchucks control stick and played a bit more like something like super monkey ball, it probably could've been a really good game. Good video btw.
Thank you for watching. And yup, I agree completely. It's nice to see when games try something different though, even if it doesn't fully pay off.
@HydratedGaming Yeah, the game looks good visually, and has some cool gimmicks and ideas, but the motion controls (while also an interesting idea) were the biggest thing holding this game back, especially considering the precision the game requires at times. Either that, or little kid me just sucked at this game, lol.

One of the other great things about GG is that you get 5 extra slots for treasure. I wish the Private Reef and Aquarium were fleshed out more. Perhaps a sequel (official or not) could solve the problem by having various bases for the Private Reef to choose from, or the Aquarium could be overhauled with a medium tank to allow you to place more species (but not large animals).
I 100% agree. I’d also like it if you could catch, name, and maybe breed specific types of fish. Make it really feel like “your” aquarium ya know. Then have it be accessible from the island base and boom, you got a very fun mechanic you can spend hours on. Could probably work in an online sharing component too.
is that marvin sml?!??!
i got codes for little big planet 4. and u cant get them
LBP2 LBP3. But 3 and other games are not made by media molecule. You can still download the updates, if not from sony, then from the archive or ps3 store. Or just play what's on the disc. The whole of v1 or so on, is available on the disc. But this video got a bit tangential
nice to see a nuanced look at "big" games back then vs now that peels a bit further into the black box that is the industry
as a new comer to the series as well this was a really nice look at the games legacy!!! sometimes i also feel like i missed out on the hey day of some of these industry changing games, because well, i was a pretty stupid child as well - hearing you talk about the games you played much later in life was really nice honestly. never too late to experience these gems
Very interesting watching somebody talk about their LBP experience with nearly no past history with it. Personally I played all 3 main titles along with some spinoffs back when each game was brand new, I wasn't a kid during it, so my view on it all was bit different from some peps. Anyways especially LBP 2&3 were great as beginner game dev kits, with enough time & effort you could make nearly anything... for ref besides films as you said, other examples are JRPGs, FPS games or even minigames like arcade machines that plays Space Invaders... The series helped shaped my skills as a inspiring indie dev back then, and I was a pretty active member among the community made message boards! You are right that Sony would probably never make something like LBP nowadays, and arguably Sony didn't truly ever love LBP properly for what it was originally either... what do I mean by that? Well as many folk know, Sony has a history with wanting to compete with Nintendo, often trying to rip off various ideas from them... after the first LBP was a hit, there seemingly later was scheming behind the scenes to shift the series into being a competitor to Mario for future titles, which meant Sony became more interested in only the "Mascot Platformer" aspects of LBP, and became far less interested in the "User Generated Content" side of the series which was the heart of it. This change easily can be seen with the last spinoff game "Sackboy A Big Adventure" which discarded all user creation elements, and instead focused on merely being a generic 3D platformer similar to "Mario 3D World" ...and rumors suggested if that spinoff game had been highly successful, it might've became the new direction for the series! But as it didn't do amazingly... the result was Sony seemingly lost interest altogether... Furthermore with the latest "Astro Bot" game now being a far more successful version that "Sackboy A Big Adventure" was trying to be "AKA a Mario Copycat," ...well lets just say I doubt Sony will ever want to go backwards now. So the conclusion to me is clear LBP is outright officially dead, and likely won't come back from a soulless company that only really wants to make Hollywood style games or ripoff their rival Nintendo, and I can't see that changing any time soon unless the corporate gaming sphere altogether makes a drastic change.
Yup. PlayStation really needs to change course. All their big games feel way too similar.
"I don't even think It will come close to being the same" Hold your horses, cowboy! The hope was lost for a really long time but a clever gadder of the interwebs actually archived all 10 million levels, and they can be played via custom servers. So, LBP as a whole is *dead*, in mainstream but can be played at any moment in time, If people wish to do so. :)
That’s excellent news, and I hope that works well and keeps the community alive, but I still think that’s going to be a massive roadblock for newcomers unfortunately. But it’s always good to see communities doing what they can to keep things going! There’s history there that’s worth preserving.
The problem is way bigger then just the gaming industry, the thing is we live in a shareholder based economy, and when you realize that a lot of actions public companies do make sense. Like, Concord exists because Sony telling shareholders that they have a live service game that they are putting a lot of money in increases share value, Concord could of never have been released and it still would of been worth every cent put into development for Sony. Or, you know about all the ai stuff that companies spew out? They do it because it increases share value, it's literally just advertisements for shareholders!
I see what you’re saying. Never underestimate the ability corporate accountants have to move money around and make a balance sheet look good, but eventually you do need real cash. I don’t think 400 million cash vanishing into nothing is going to make shareholders happy. I don’t really know if it’s entirely the fault of shareholders though. Nintendo has shareholders, and they always seem to have an innovative and diverse library. I think there’s larger issues at PlayStation.
This series was so amazing, but it was ruined by hackers (and outdated security). The first two games were killed by bad actors before those same bad actors moved onto 3.
I feel like it is also because of money but also about what is the least risky. in the beginning they experimented and eventually they found what sells and despite technological progress the cost of games just get more expensive to make. so you just have less great games over time because they want to make a game that is guaranteed to sell and follow trends
I think you’re 100% right, but paradoxically, the lack of experimentation will decrease sales in the long run. Abandoning franchises before they really have a chance is also hurting Sony in the long run. Nintendo, (though is guilty of abandoning many of its franchises) does a much better job at this. That’s how you get games like Luigi’s mansion going from 3 million sales on gamecube to 9 million sales on switch. I truly believe LBP could have been a pillar of PlayStation, but they already kind of abandoned it after the second game. Series take time to grow. Nintendo series are decades old, gaming staples which will sell by name alone. Sony doesn’t have that because they’ve chased the short term trends. The only series still active from the PS1 era is gran turismo. That is bafflingly bad. If you want an easy way to guarantee sales, you need long running series with decades of excellent games. It feels like no one even questions if they should get the next Mario or Zelda game (assuming they like those genres) Sony lacks this, and it’s self inflicted because they have an amazing history.
i used to do fake let's plays on LBP1 and now i'm a youtuber myself... LBP made me want to be a youtuber! i'd have imaginary guests on and multiple seasons of the let's plays, indicated by the color of my sackboy's cape. I became a youtuber myself because of LBP... great video man! from sub number 127.
I wish I would have played it when I was a kid. It sounds like a game I would have loved. And thank you for watching!
Fr, emulating LBP is one of the worst ways. I replayed it on an emulator, and doing so much to get levels was so much worse than just getting my old PlayStation and booting up levels. You're closer to the actual community that way. Rip sackboy.
I still feel that largely gaming companies have become a lot less creative because they've become more monopolistic. Sony, Nintendo, Valve, EA, and many other competitors were compelled to fund games like LBP because they had a lot fair competition, and would face more consequence for stupid decisions. Now, it's harder to compete with a mega corporations if they are the only ones in their domain to have power over an industry, and make it increasingly unfair to every other company that don't automatically side with them. Within the modern Corporate Capitalism system, they're encouraged to hold onto the copyright to every single IP forever, and keep producing sequel after sequel until they've become the Frankenstein of all of gaming. Other companies like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple, Disney, and others are also monopolies, and their relative industries have also taken the same amount of consequences.
I agree in the the tech space like with Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, (Google especially needs to be broken up, no people should have that much power) but in video games specifically, I’m not so sure yet, but i can see your argument. If Microsoft pulls out of the console space, which I think they might, leaving only Sony and Nintendo, that is not good at all. But I’m not sure what you even do at that point. Nintendo and Sony aren’t even that big. Weirdly enough, Microsoft, amazon, and Google seem to be the ones who struggle the most in the gaming space. Xbox has been losing since the kinect, and stadia was a disaster. Gaming is a creative space, and doesn’t lend itself well to corporate structure. And I think gaming studios are being punished for their lack of creativity. Look at Ubisoft right now. On the other side, EA has a monopoly on sports licenses, which wasn’t true in the 2000’s, and now sports games are getting worse. So like all problems, it’s complicated. I’m not really sure what the solutions are to be honest. I think things will get worse before they get better. I think in the next 5-10 years you’re going to see a Ubisoft or EA go down. Indies will continue to rise. I think the big issue is that games cost so much to make that only the massive companies can finance these projects. I have no idea what the solution to that is. There may not be one.
Dude I was astonished when I saw your sub count, you deserve hundreds of thousands more 🎉
Thank you for the very kind words my friend
the fuck do you mean that Donkey Kong country became a thing because of the genesis version of Alladin? *Looks up the development of donkey kong country from Wikipedia* Wait, that's actually true?
Donkey Kong Lore is truly one of life’s greatest joys.
Oh my FUCKING GOD the opening story about your initial view of LBP as a child is so SPECIFIC it's so funny.
I was a pretty stupid child. But I’ve since grown out of it. Now I’m a pretty stupid adult.

Alright, will do. It’s about water so it’s on brand.
You are a true Sony fan 100% Finally someone how doesn't give Sony a shield from criticism because it's "Xbox's fault." I feel the same way! I feel Sony died with the PS3 all that mainstream attention to appeal more to the west really killed Sony's variety. You guys remember Fat Princess, Starhawk, Twisted Metal, Infamous, we even got a Sly 4.😢 Sony let the Japanese snort coke and make games again!
I hate to break it to you, but Stellar Blade and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart are already on PC, so that leaves you with five games. Even then, Spider Man 2 and Astro Bot are HIGHLY LIKELY to get a PC port. So if these ports get released, you only have 3 (!!!) exclusive games on the PS5. Man, the drout is real! It was a good decision to buy a backwards-compatible PS3 Fat instead! That console has three generations worth of PlayStation games, and in fact, some of the best of PlayStation’s history. Meanwhile, the PS5 has five games, which can reduce down to three pretty quickly. Just think about the value!
Dude you’re so right. I got a ps3 last year, and my goodness I can’t believe I didn’t know how amazing of a library it has. Littlebigplanet, Motorstorm, 3D Dot Game Heroes, I even really like PS Allstars. Not to mention all the PS2 collections on there. Amazing console you can’t go wrong getting a PS3. There’s so much variety that’s just not a thing anymore these days. Hopefully Astro is a step back in that direction.
@@HydratedGaming Mine is the Holy Grail of PlayStation, the CECHA01 model, which has the PS2’s hardware in it. Been playing through the Ratchet & Clank games and Crash Twinsanity on it thanks to full hardware backwards compatibility (Twinsanity has emulation issues on the CECHE01 and CECHC04 models).
Dude nice!! Those PS3 Fats just look so cool too with the Spiderman Font. I am jealous. If you’re playing PS2 platformers I must humbly request you play SpongeBob Battle for Bikini Bottom if you haven’t already.
If I could say anything it's this... The PS5 is the PS3 all over again but instead of Sony learning there lessons and trying to make the PS5 more accessible by lowering prices or making a lower priced version, and giving it more games, they chose to ignore requests/demand, they chose to kill off there IPs for exclusives that will only last for at least a year, decided to port their games over to PC (which removes exclusivity), and sell a 700 dollar paperweight while raising the prices of the original PS5 consoles. XBox has become enough of a joke that they aren't in direct competition anymore. Nintendo is winning, as a fan of them I feel conflicted about that though since they now officially dictate where the console market is going and it worries me. I wish Sega could step back into the game, at least participating in the console market would be fun again with them around.
I think you’re probably right that the implosion of the Xbox One is to blame for a lot of what we’re seeing. I like Nintendo too, but a world where they’re completely victorious in the console war is a very bad one lol. Like all things in life, most of the issues here can be traced back to the Kinect.
@@HydratedGaming I am planning on doing my own video where I make my own console... But I know I'm not going to sell it by hardware alone, I would need something interesting about it... There is something that most console manufactures have overlooked for a long time and I think it's time to bring it back...
If the PS5 was backwards compatible with physical disks I’d buy one yesterday. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Aside form stuff like Ratchet and Clank, Octodad, Astrobot, and a few others I don’t really have an incentive to buy a PS5. Most of the first and third party PlayStation games I’m interested in are from the PS2/3 era, and I can just emulate those (I’ve been doing that to play Resistance, the older Ratchet and Clanks, Little Big Planet, and others. It’s been a blast. If Sony were to make collections of their older games for PS5/PC it would print them money). There’s not really an excuse to not have backwards compatibility since hobbyists in their spare time have been able to get emulation working, and even restore online multiplayer for games whose surfers shut down. The current Xbox is backwards compatible with a good chunk of the previous systems’ libraries; and if you pay $20 for dev mode you can use emulators going up to the PS2/Wii. Certain models of the PS3 were backwards compatible with the PS1/2 (I recently bought a modded Vita so I can play PS1, PSP, and Vita games. I used to have a PSP, but stupidly traded it in when I was a dumb kid. The Ape Escape port was so much fun. Such a shame Sony killed Japan Studio).
Yeah I don’t really understand what Sony is doing. With how long development takes, especially with the type of games they make, collections and rereleases would really fill in the spaces between game releases. Closing Japan Studio while simultaneously trying to pump out 12 live service games just tells me whatever creative and passionate people there are left at Playstation are unfortunately not in charge at the moment. When I play Switch, I can tell this is from the same people who made Gamecube and Wii. When I play PS5, it doesn’t even feel like it’s from the same people who gave us PS2 and PS3.
You are Little bit of GradeAUnderA in terms of art comic + commentary for gaming,i will stick around for sure!

I dream of a remaster of this game
I wouldn’t be shocked if there is one some day.
2:19 for being touted as the best selling home console it is really telling that not many of the exclusive sales number get over 20 million sales, TLOU 2 sell 10 million and Gow Ragnarok sell 15 mil, Spiderman 2 11 mil, horizon forbidden west sell 8.4 copy. this console sell over 60 million unit so where is half of the userbase? still on scalper storage? and all of these game are on or coming to pc too like don't get me wrong over 10 million copy is a lot but it still doesn't reach half of the sold ps5. and most of ps5 exclusive cost well over 100 million dollars to make.
I think a lot of that install base is the COD, FIFA, Madden crowd, which is great that they enjoy playing those on PlayStation, but I think PlayStations problem is that they make 2-3 games in a series and then abandon them. It’s hard to get a ton of sales in series that haven’t been established very long. Compare this to Nintendo. Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Mario Party, Mario Sports, all those series are decades old and still get new games. There’s probably people who grew up playing Mario who are playing it with their grandchildren at this point. Sony has God of War and Ratchet and Clank, and that only goes back to PS2. Gran Turismo is the only series I can think of from the PS1 days that still gets new games, and it’s a car game.
@@HydratedGaming you are spot on on the cod fifa and madden crowd, in my city there is a lot of ps 4 and 5 rental cafe, most of the time they are used for group of friend to play Fifa, fun fact: a base ps5 equal to 10% price of a three room house in my city.
I wonder if someone made a petition to put this game on the Switch.
Not sure The Pokémon Company pays much attention to petitions lol, but I think there’s a decent market for this, so maybe they’ll listen to that.
@@HydratedGaming Okay.
You shouldn't love PlayStation, they clearly don't care about any fan, you see their greed, realize it, I realized it with Nintendo, so can you with Sony
Why? They make good games and consoles. You can like their development team without liking their sales and legal team. Same with nintendo.
Sounds like you are part of the problem. Should have just built a PC after Sony killed all of their IPs during the PS4 era
Damnnn not even TWO games per year??? That's so hilariously sad omg I was wondering if I made the right choice by choosing PC and Yeah, pretty much (´;ω;`)
It pains me to say this console generation is probably a lost cause at this point, we’re 4 years in and not much has happened, but I’m still hoping they change direction for the future. They just need to make some cheaper medium sized games to go along with their big blockbusters. Astrobot is a good start.
@@HydratedGamingExactly what I was thinking. Instead of blowing 300M on a mediocre and generic game, they could've spent 20M on 15 more expiremental games. Even if some of the 15 dont do great, its way better than the full 300M being wasted. Also they should make a hybrid console, to be honest.
Yup. When you hear about what happened with Concord we could have been on Ape Escape 7 by now.
Nice video! Thank you for sharing this piece of knowledge :D
Thank you for watching! I appreciate it!
Thank you! Very interesting fact. I wonder if the developers had already localized the game, but didn't publish it during the NES era
I think another commenter @ClassicSonicSatAm mentioned how this game maybe didn’t even need to be translated from the famicom game. It’s interesting Bubbles is called “Groopy” in it, which is her Japanese name.
Still don't get why Nintendo keep re releasing the nes version without the factory level instead of the full/improved version they had on Wii and 3DS, tho Game Boy DK is the best one.
I agree. I haven’t played all the way through the gameboy one yet as my game battery died halfway through, but it’s one I plan to look at closer.
Can only guess they included it as it's one of the few famicom disk games that doesn't need any language translating, do prefer the disk version it's one my favourites on animal crossing
The language thing would make sense. I was so excited when I found out there was another version of Clu Clu Land on AC. Found out about it on a wiki though, never heard anyone talk about it on TH-cam surprisingly.

They should put it on switch for real. One of my favorite games as a kid
I could see it happening tbh. Lots of Wii games are coming over lately.
Absolutely banger game, Needs to be Switch with another Sequel or reboot!
It would be cool to see them expand upon this gameplay style. I'd also hope for a hard mode, but that will never happen.
This was a pretty good game, but the sequal took all the good things from this game, and added even more, it was phenomenal. More and different mini games, 4 characters to choose from with different abilities.. So good.
I'm curious to see how the 4 characters work. That's a cool idea. I'll have to look at that game too sometime. That sounds very interesting.
I remember for like my 11th birthday getting both this game and its sequel and absolutely adoring them! There’s a super special place in my heart for them, and recently got to replay them on my Wii U. Cool vid, loved your take on it :)
