    No one talks about it much in the firewood industry but I think protecting your assets is major. A cheap insurance if you are good with your books and records is to open an LLC. Seriously, you are driving a dump or trailer and you damage something or hurt someone…your personal assets are fair game depending on who is on the other end. I’ve only been doing this a couple years as a side gig and it’s worth the cost. There have been a couple of close calls.

    not only is a sharp chain needed at all times, learn to flip your bar. that will help with straighter cuts. and invest in a 65 - 70cc + saw with at least a 28" bar for bucking, (I use a 32" with a Stihl MS 360) that will help your back long term. and if you can spend the $$$ have your saw(s) ported and tuned. always wear hearing protection !!!

  • @xdh10x

    Dont hurt your back dragging logs around. Make your measured cuts almost all the way through. Roll log once and finish the cuts. Get a longer bar and your back will thank you.

    my grandfather cut wood back in the 80s and early 90s (retired farmer - old school, not modern farmer - he could GO even when he was old). He had woods that was unproductive land, that's where the trees came from. He had a loader tractor and a dump grain truck that could haul ten tons and suffered from lack of use, not too much use. It was single axle and could get into most places without trouble, and it had tall sides for grain, so no difficulty hauling things. He'd head to the wood with the tractor ( a deere 3020) and the tractor had a fast 3pt mounted splitter that would cycle quickly with the tractor at idle. And he was bored and would probably much do firewood (in his 70s) 3 days a week 6 hours a day. I have no idea if anyone around here does much as most of the trees cut in my neighborhood - 200 miles away from where I grew up - end up being chipped. I've seen one or two firewood processors on hillsides, but they usually have a full wood yard and aren't running. Where my grandfather was (rural), people wanted hardwoods and were usually willing to stack their own - so he had to stack the wood once to season it and then I guess he probably loaded the loader to load the truck again later. I guess he could've seasoned it without stacking it, but he stacked it. $90 a full cord back then, $60 to family. What made it work was that the wood was free, he was bored, and he had retired farm equipment that cost nothing extra to use, and most homeowners back then were too cheap to pay you to stack the wood - which he wouldn't have wanted to do, anyway. He also had a large main tillage tractor, and if trees were hung up or dangerous or leaners, instead of cutting them, he would tie a huge cable on the trees and pull them over. As in, cable longer than any of the trees were tall.

    Nice tips that are much appreciated! I have not sold firewood but have used it for complete heating for 9 years. The most useful thing that I have learned the hard way is, TOUCH YOUR WOOD LESS TIMES! If I have permission to cut and split where I gather the wood I take advantage of that by taking my saw, safety gear, wood totes and my splitter to the location of the harvest (in one trip). That way I can cut, split and stack in one motion. Once I'm home, I unload the 1/2 cord totes with a skid loader and do not have to move it again until it's being tossed in the fire (or sold).

    Hey friend, I see you standing at the side of your wood when splitting. Not sure what wood you have, but I have seen pent up energy in my Fir, and Pine let go with enough force to do real damage. I have watched fire wood split, and fly 12-15 feet. It hurts like hell when your in the way. Just a thought from an old homesteader. Take care.

    Hey man, nice video. Only one thing - that splitter is so slooooooow. Surely you can put a 4 blade on the front? Is there a reason you guys dont seem to like using the faster kinetic splitters?

    • @farmingmini
      @farmingmini 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I picked this splitter because it’s the fastest for the price. I do plan on upgrading once I sell enough firewood to justify it. I appreciate you watching our videos.

    If you want to move up from sidewalk chalk, I absolutely LOVE my Mingo Firewood Marker (with 16" wheel, obviously). I found it on Amazon and get the inverted paint cans from Lowes. SOOOOOOO much nicer than that measuring tape. Especially when I'm marking and cutting in a wood pile. As I climb over and around stuff, it is not only much more convenient, but much safer as well. Great video, brother! Sure appreciate it. 😁

    You had me nervous for a minute before I saw your hard hat and face protection cutting down those branches! Glad 40ish Jason has learned some life lessons! LOL! Also, I helped a friend last weekend with some burning, did okay with the green stuff knowing we were expecting smoke. Do you have any recommendations for a dead tree that had been cut down? It didn't seem to take to the flames or the smolder we had going from the green leaves with branches that went up. Does it need to dry out more? Hotter fire? It was almost soft to the touch. We didn't have a flame thrower like you... also we're in city limits and she had to call the forestry commission before burning. ;) #citylife

    I think you would be a lot better served by your tools to have a separate LogOx without the extension handle and then getting a separate can't hook or Peavey with the log lifter. That method makes the LogOx a lot more useful for stacking or slinging the short cut pieces.

    You have to fill the tote 10" above the existing tote to get an honest Face Cord. The wood will shrink down to 48" after it's dry and you'll have a true face cord. This is for the 275 gallon totes that you are using. The 330 gallon totes are 48" tall to start with so I would go 4" over the 48" so when it shrinks/dries you'll be at 48".
