Have you played with Lego as a kid and had those damn bricks stuck up somewhere inappropriate? I bet you have. But Lego and Vikings aren't the only things that Denmark has to offer. From explorers of the West and innovators in science and philosophy, the Danes really know how to impress the world. So don't feel pressured, Denmark, and let's show Sweden and Norway how size truly doesn't matter. ...

Kalevala was mostly recorded in East Karelia, among the Karelians, who are a closely related but separate ethnic group from the Finns. Finnic mythology and runo-singing was shared by all Baltic Finns but was best preserved in East Karelia.

Oh my....a lot of this video just contains straight up old Finnish nationalist propaganda. Very unfortunate that you try to educate people with this material. Finland was seen as a part of Sweden, not some occupied area. The Finns had equal rights to Swedes and where seen as no different. When Russia attacked Finland (pick a time) it would obviously be primarily Finns defending, as they lived there. The so-called "Swedish overlords" back in Stockholm would hear about an attack days later and could THEN send troops to help, if it was deemed necessary. This is just basic understanding of geography. Finns and Swedes have, since ancient times, agreed that the enemy lies in the East. The thing with taxes happened multiple times is Sweden proper too, everyone but the King and the aristocracy was dirt-poor, but STILL had to be taxed. The pro-Finnish-anti-Swedish propaganda is a relatively modern invention that served the purpose of making the Finns WANT their own country and act on it. It is so sad to watch people use this old propaganda to teach history the wrong way, especially as Swedes and Finns share such a long history together,

this was just brilliant, with its rarely seen knowledge about Finnish people's real history under Swedish (nasty) rule... though it seems that vikings of the east were widely Finns, including "the founder of Russia" Rurik. Vikings were not a nation or tribe, but pretty much mixed punch of pirates. Finnish tribe Hämäläiset also were skillful sailors, even if they lived inland. Most of the vikings of the west were norwegian (and?) or from Gotland, when Swedish (Sveans) were more merchant-minded than fighters, even though they gladly impersonate "the nation of Vikings"... 😏 anyway, this was absolutely beautiful execution, thank you! -Finn

This video threw away all credibility in the first few lines. The civil war was not for indepence and was fought after Finland was already independent and the power struggle thereafter with class being a major contributor to the conflict. Their brief description of the whites and reds is honestly so wrong it's insulting. I think the video should be renamed to "From United State's Perspective"

As a person of Russo-Ukrainian heritage, I can say that the whole debate over "who is the one true heir to the Rus" is dumb. Its like debating over which bla in bla bla bla is the true bla. Especially since one of the blas (Belarus) is never even considered.

It's nonsensical from historical point of view, but very important for national myth. People refer to dynamics of 1000 year old past with a goal to influence today's dynamics. Sometimes unconsciously (when we're dealing with internet shitposts for fun), but basically it's used to justify right to govern land&people. Proving link between Ukraine and old capital can be used as additional explanation for why forced role of 'little brother' or Moscow's rule are not necessary - because they weren't so before. Century ago Hrushevskyi wrote "We are the people from whom the name was stolen", and similar rhetoric is often used to this day. People are trying to protect history of this land from being appropriated by those who they consider outsiders in order to prove that they have right to stand on their own (to have own political centre in more historically appropriate city). Meanwhile from the russian point of view "we are the heir" is an argument for why the rule of Russian tsardom/empire over lands of former Rus lands was legitimate. And therefore they have right to a) soft version: pre-1240 past of Kyivan lands as their own too; b) hard version: continue influence people living here even today, including political pressure and whatever the hell is going today. I believe this is the core reason for such debate. Belarus is rarely considered because its city never was a capital of the whole Rus or indepent state that later claimed Rus heritage. No wonder their opposition likes to assosiate with litvinism, regardless of how weird it is.
