I also think weather control is often an underestimated card! Always happy to buy it.
@16:15 Just to clarify: if your leader survives a battle, they can be used in a different battle IN THE SAME TERRITORY, but not in a different territory that turn. It's p10 of the rules. It sounds like you are saying the winner of the battle can use a surviving leader elsewhere on the planet.
@@hidden-assets incorrect. I am specifically talking about when a Traitor is called. In that case, you CAN indeed use that leader again, anywhere else you have a battle. Normally, it can only be used in the same territory.
@jackredathewarp understood. Thanks!
Did you make this for retail or purely for fun? Would love to buy the room tiles at least
@@simonh2011 just for fun. Planning on a big new custom expansion but waiting until the new Nemesis arrives so I can gain more inspiration.
@jackredathewarp ah fair enough. I had pledged all in for retaliation but cancelled it in the end. May pick it up retail at some point but not a fan of the puzzle style tiles and the all action style gameplay conpared to the survival style of the others...
Funny that you mention the Wayku. They appeared in Paul of Dune and I also found them interesting as a faction. I had some wild idea for a faction who's forces were spread out among other player's reserves, however that might work.
Non binding deals certainly has more room for an interesting meta game to develop over multiple games. I’ve played a lot of Zoo Vadis recently which uses an interesting take on deals that kind of gives the best of both worlds. In that game deals within that round must be honoured but future promises are non binding. I think it’s a good way to stop the moments where you pay someone for something and they just take your money. Which isn’t a particularly interesting form of treachery and is a great way to ruin a new player’s game. It does still allow for betrayal and backstabbing and that ups the intensity and excitement over the long term. For example if you pay someone to go to a specific space in that round they must do it, but if you pay them to support you next turn they can still betray you. It’s interesting because people will still make future promises alol the time even though they know they are non binding and usually people stay true to their word. It’s also cool to see how once a player breaks a promise the entire table turns against them and will try to bring them down. Sorry for the long response, I just think this is a really interesting subject and Zoo Vadis is a great way to experience how binding and non binding deals can coexist in the same game.
Emporer his ability tio support ally should nbe limited, and maybe collecting spice for Treachery should be postpone till end of BIDDING phase, place in front of shield till end of BIDDING phase, money transfer in movement. Maybe even same for GUILD in process of shipment, Thelaxu end of revive and etc.
Maybe Binding Deal can be broken, but you have disadvantage for rest of game. IN BATTLE, instead AGRESSOR is winner unless not broken rules. Or penalty of loss 5 spice of future incomes(1 spice per each spice income go into BANK, spice collection, choam charity, killig leader, give from payment for bidding, shipment,... = 1 spice ofrom each to be able to doing stuff). OR Score penalty in tournament.
The few games my group has tried without binding deals became much less interesting. Nobody trusted anyone else to follow through on any interesting deals, so it ended up being small stuff like Atreides bidding knowledge where the risks were low. Part of what we find so interesting about binding deals is that you can never know what the other person's angle is. Often a "good" deal has a catch that isn't found out until later. It's always fun and interesting trying to figure out the why behind a deal that isn't being presented, and that just feels so thematic and Dune. “When is a gift, not a gift?”
@@Eutress2 ah but “When is a gift not a gift?” is a perfect example of a non-binding deal. Atreides knew they couldn’t fully trust the Emperor, but the potential upside of the deal was too good to pass up. This is why I find it more thematic and interesting. A world with binding deals is far less dangerous, which is more likely to be boring. “The first step in avoiding a trap - is knowing of its existence.”
@ Happy to disagree! One great example: Our emperor bribed another player 20 spice (his entire treasury) to make a major attack on Carthag. This then forced another player to respond with equal force, and allowed the Emperor’s ally to secure a daring win against weaker foes elsewhere. These kind of huge deals, while possible, would certainly be less likely at our table because they could have just accepted 20 spice and done nothing. Non-binding deals work fine with trusting players, but between paranoid ones (like my group) it’s necessary to make deals work at all. The biggest takeaway from my table is that the really exciting, grand deals only happen because there is a guarantee.
I think if deals are non-binding ever, then in the most high stakes moments of the game deals will be useless. Because if its better to reneg, that player will reneg.
@@ericastrue4527 sure. But will it be better? Having played it that way for 30+ years I can report that deals were very rarely reneged. It wasn’t better to do so.
@@jackredathewarp Not necessarily better or worst, I'm quite sure it doesn't break the game one way or the other. I would have to try "only non-binding deals" but with my group at least I think people would then tend to not do any deals. Alternatively, if people can always do binding deals, if you make a non-binding deal it's very suspicios. Maybe there could be a sort of a notary cost to making a binding deal, such as both sides have to pay 1 spice to the bank. That would de-incentivise binding dealmaking, but still allow it.
In any case, I do want to give it a try without binding deals altogether after hearing your reasoning
There a so many things to think about in Dune, and adding lies is a bit much for me! It os cutthroat enoough without it
@@ALDRO88 Arrakis is not a place for the weak.
I love Cosmic Encounter and know Will Luera personally. This content is made for me!
A house-rule that my table uses is that no deal is binding unless all parties touch the Dune planet in the corner of the game board. A player might use it once then they just can't be bothered to reach out and touch it. Laziness wins out over certainty.
I think binding deals are an important aspect of the game, particularly when spice is at stake. Without binding deals, if emp bribes 1 spice to Atreides for a card info, why would Atreides ever tell the truth? A good compromise is to say that deals without spice may or may not be binding especially since this incentives offering spice to make sure you get what you want done.
@@Ace_xD999 why would Atreides tell the truth? Perhaps because they want to get bribes again in the next round. Reneging on deals has a cost. The game would be better with the risk, because it forces players to truly weigh them.
@ Yeah that’s an interesting point, that the lie might come back to bite them but I guess that would only happen if the info buyer bought the card and found it wasn’t what they were expecting (or deduced from future card plays etc.). I guess it would create an interesting dynamic not having binding deals but I think I prefer having them in the game. Definitely worth trying though so thanks for the idea!
Having binding deals does not prevent non binding deals, in a way. You can still make secret deals with other players that are not binding, and of you need to pay spice for it you make a bribe for nothing. I don’t see what reason would there be to remove 1 aspect of the game if the alternative is already possible
I would have to play with non-binding deals to know for sure, but my gut feeling is that I wouldn't like that change. In fact I would go the other direction if anything and codify certain deals like give the classic "zero dial, lowest hero, no cards, no faction abilities" a special name that could be invoked so everyone is 100% clear on the wording of the deal.
Played recently. This thing is RIDICULOUSLY fun, I daresay more fun than the video game. Can't wait for Slay the Spire 2!
I just noticed the Legendary Pictures logo on the GameFound, is this a standard thing (because Legendary has some form of control over Dune rights?) or is it implying that the new edition will be tied-in with the movies?
@@MrSaturn012 they own the rights
Our deal strategy goes like this: You choose BG and play truthrance: if he will play a certain card. Then, you offer them a deal: either they become your slave, or you force them to break their truthrance. According to the FAQ, they must do everything in their power to uphold the truthrance, which means they are compelled to accept slavery. We really enjoy the possibilities that truthrance brings to the game.
It had been a long time since i played cosmic with a dedicated group until relatively recently, i finally got my friends into board games enough that they were up for a more complicated game like Cosmic. I certainly forgot how enjoyable it is to just listen to your discussion of cosmic aliens. Love these vids, jack. In case it interests you, it seems this game has a very international appeal once the english is hashed out, my group of physicist friends from egypt and india especially really love the game and how varied it is. We're all a very structure-oriented bunch so theres a lot of passion for "relearning" the strategy for each collection of aliens. Also you mentioned you love tortoise and now I've got a personal beef with you. Our most recent five player game, I was Particle and had managed to get 6 points against everyone else's 3 or fewer. But another player was tortoise, and he worked with everyone at the table to get me down to 4 points before running out of cards. Then two players made a deal and "won", and tortoise used his power and made another deal with the 5th player and they also won. I had 6 points at one time but ended up being the only loser of that game, and it was because of Tortoise, the jerk 😡
@@glowerworm fantastic!
Hey Jack, wanted to ask a question about the Robbery token. Can a player playing Moritani decide to get a Treachery Card after the target player reveals how much spice they would be giving the Moritani as a part of the robbery.
@@mockforce nope. Moritani must commit to one or the other.
@@jackredathewarp This may seem like a weird work around, but could you ask for a bribe on the decision for what to do? As in tell the triggering faction, I won't take half your spice if you agree to pay me 3 spice.
@ sure
Hey Jack! How do you feel about the BG automatically flipping in territories after other factions have battled there and wiped themselves out? We’ve been playing that the BG don’t flip until the beginning of the next ship/movement phase, but some BG players have felt cheated out of spice and stronghold control. Thoughts?
@@dpollere I play they don’t flip. If they want control, they need to choose to flip.
I absolutely dislike Ace and I would never pick it if I have the choice between it and something else. It is an anti power. Not only that you will most likely not get any alliance invitations as long as you have your power, neither would anyone join you on offense (unless they could win the game this way) and if you are able to pull of to win a foreign colony against all odds, everybody would probably try to target you. I have a similar problem with Winner but it's not quite as bad with Winner.
You're definitely committing to being the public enemy with Ace, but thats sort of just part of the power. The fun of Ace is in properly managing your hand so that you can trick people into using their good cards. But yeah, if you dont want to be a common enemy you wont like the power. It also really suffers with the inclusion of the reward deck in my opinion. Take reward deck out and people might actually invite you as a defensive ally.
Where did you get that play mat from? Very cool
@@DM-Zack artscow
Saboteur is my favorite art from the FFG edition. I'm usually not a fan of spider-inspired alien designs, but the Saboteur is just so unique that I can't help but love it. The Laser and Macron from the Eon edition are also great.
It seems that Desmond was infected with some type of Nano virus that allows him to send some type of signal or message to the victims brain to cook them microwave style. its like powers of the Sisterhood to manipulate individuals, but in a more intense manner. I feel that we will see more of Sister Mikaela going to Arakis in episode 6 (fingers crossed) as her power base of the Freemen.
Hi Jack, Thank you for the video-it's an interesting twist on the reward deck. It really encourages players to ally with defense to unblock the reward deck, especially aliens that rely on it. Toward the end of the video, you mentioned a custom TTS version of Cosmic Encounter. Would it be possible to share a link so we can try it out? Thanks again!
@@sigma5340 I don’t have a link yet cuz it is beyond my capabilities.
unnecessary dialogue. it’s a visual medium. the adaptation was made better because of it.
I appreciate your analysis and certainly respect your opinion. I've read the original six books several times over the years and have a fondness of the Lynch film. I loved the new movies and felt the compromises that were made in the films made them more accessible to new audiences. I did not feel shortchanged and am glad we were able to see two movies from Frank Herbert's universe come to life. My wife is not a reader of the books and loved both films. She did not like the Lynch film, but has become interested in reading the books now.
@@michaelevans1578 yeah, it’s clear that this was the goal, and ultimately I feel it is successful. I simply think it could have been a tiny bit more successful!
Book reader X 60 years. Tech was good in the movie. BUT left out a lot of the most important plot points.
I also find Greg's KH idea for everyone interesting. Maybe just a treachery card, meaning Atreides still has an advantage to gain it, a special worm so that next/previous/opposite player in storm order gets it, adding it to discovery tokens, first player to commit to solo in each Nexus...
About translations, is there any possibility of GF9 reaching out to the community to offer themselves as translators, and possibly even proofreaders? I'm not suggesting for free, rather that professional translators who are already Dune-game fans to present tentative bids and credentials to GF9. I'm positive that there are qualified translator gamers in key languages, or at least gamers who can help their translator friends make it right. Plus get native language gamers proofread the translations before publishing - this could be volunteers, and it's essentially play testing the text
@@MarsVoltaic they do have a team they have worked with. It’s not so much the process- it’s economics. They can only do a translation if it makes sense sales wise. Expansion 3 did not have a big push for translation because the translation they did do for expansion 2 didn’t sell enough. I suspect it is part of their current calculus.
For sure a key issue, though I've heard that sometimes the translations weren't always done well, which is why I think getting at least one native speaking Duner already (very) familiar with the rules could do wonders with ensuring we all have the same base RAW. Also I saw on BGG recently a thread maybe GF9 should reflect on. It pointed out a side issue of having to buy exp. 3 only in English is with the cards' backs being in different languages makes it easier to spot exp. 3 content. Colored sleeves could be a workaround, but maybe GF9 considers having only logos and no text at all on card backs for the KH edition 🤷♂️
What about to add Neutral Faction Leaders for hiring(single combat, or for rest of game after hiring or till his elimination), max of 4, strength 2,3,4,5. None Traitors(none extra traitor are needed), they are loyal to theirs contract. Price for contract is its strength value.
@@TheLichkingMaster but who are these characters? How do they fit in thematically? If anyone in the Dune universe (especially a mercenary) that trustworthy??
Hey Jack! Huge thank you to both you and MrNobody for this battle language / spotlight on the faction, loved watching it and hearing your thoughts on the faction. Here’s some responses to the questions I heard in the video; 24:05 - I got the artwork for the leader portraits from Central419’s (one of the admins on the Dune Tabletop discord) dune homebrew site, he has a bunch of cool fan made / homebrew leader artwork hosted there. 24:40 - You got it on the second guess! The faction symbol is a fist wearing a mailed gauntlet. 30:00 - The homeworld saw a fair bit of testing, at least 10 or so games, but that specific version probably saw about 3 games. I don’t think the threshold values actually changed all that much during testing, I looked at the different homeworlds and decided that 7-20 would be a good starting point and throughout testing I never really saw/heard a reason to change it. After hearing your commentary, I think I’ll try out a 0-6 Low and a 6-20 high (similar mechanic to Secundus needing an extra force to get back to high). 34:05 - I can’t describe how happy I am to hear that, thank you so much! 34:25 - I wont spoil anything here, but Bartholomew, Gordian, and Minsk are all named characters in the Source Book with some interesting lore behind them, and House Ryder has an interesting arrangement with House Mikarrol. I think you'll really enjoy the "Houses of the Landsraad" book once you get it, loads of interesting stuff in there. If I missed anything please let me know! - Gary
Nice job with the faction. I already translated it to polish for my own "Dune abomination". What do you say on what's mentioned below that Raiders should pick from the discards not from the opponent's hand?
I'm no game designer, so this idea would probably break the game in a number of ways that I haven't considered, but I thought there might a "golden path" (sorry I couldn't resist) between spice dialers and spice dial haters by adding this ability: During a nexus phase any Great House of the Landsraad (so not the Fremen, Choam, Spacing Guild, BG, etc.) could declare Kanly against another great house, and until that vendetta was satisfied (maybe with a loss tracker, death of a particular leader, or perhaps just the next nexus phase) they don't have to spice dial against each other when their forces come into conflict. This would at least let non-dialers play with dialers and not be limited to only playing Fremen all the time. And they'd still have to spice dial against non-vendetta enemies, so it would would still expose them to spice dialing unless they strictly limited who they target. I don't have a regular group to playtest this, so I'm just spitballing here, but I thought it might be interesting to have a formal Kanly declaration in the game, and I couldn't think of a better time than during a nexus (probably before alliances are chosen). Of course you couldn't ally with and have a vendetta against the same faction at the same time. Crazy idea, or some sliver of merit? And has anyone already tried something like this?
One of the errors of the game in spanish is that they translated "clockwise" as "left" (it should be "sentido horario"), and that brings up many discussions for those who are just starting to play the game.
@@leonardokuntscher7857 some similar notions though not with the spice dialing element. The trouble is when limiting things to just Great Houses- in the base game, half the players wouldn’t be able to do it, and you could have games where 5 of 6 factions can’t. :(
Will be there be new art or will the Ilya art be reused?
@@knightonart8886 I don’t expect all new art.
It would be very nice to know if the KHE is a new edition or a deluxe edition.
@@rachelw1349 indeed.
I agree with most of your critique. I too read it as kid like 40 years ago and just finished re-reading the whole series.
The first movie was a better adaptation than the second. The second is a better movie but a horrible adaptation. The Atreides are very martial family. Duncan would not have hair like a hippie. I think you could have left out the Liet story, but it helps to show how the freman can unite behind an idea. The second movie especially has the Freeman as fractured. They're not, the leader has absolute control. If you disagree, you fight to the death. By shortening the time frame,at the end of the second movie it's not really a sacrifice for Paul to just marry Irulan.Chani is a brat. By leaving out the spacing Guild the end makes no sense. The guild does what Paul says. This lets his army destroy the noble houses one at a time. The Fremen don't have spaceships. How do they fight the noble houses if the guild's not on their side. By eliminating the guild they minimize the importance of the spice.
The book is about so much more than Paul, Jessica, and the Fremen. The great disappointment in these movies for me is that it is solely about this siingle arc. We learn nothing about the Spacing Guild, and the treatment of the Mentat is criminal. To me, Thufir is far more interesting and pivotal than Duncan or Gurney. The very notion of what a Mentat is is non-existent is these movies, and the Baron's scheme to obtain Thufir is vital in his character development. It is that creepy bastard at his finest.
Jessica vomits because she's pregnant. Even the Bene Gesserit succumb to morning sickness.
it is not in the book!
Transmuting poisons without antidotes is a bit more challenging than morning sickness. In the book, she is caught in a cave in and manages to not breath for a loooong time while Paul digs her out. Her upchucking is absurd.
@@jackredathewarp You've obviously never been pregnant. Jessica succumbs to human frailties throughout the books and movies. The impressive set of skills she possesses does not immune her to every weakness. Her failing to completely master her body in this particular instance is not absurd.
@ I get it. But it isn’t true to her character.
the lynch movie is terrible… he disowned it… nuff said
So much conformity on the web to praise these new Dune movies. Cudos to you for having the bravery and integrity to voice your critiques of these adaptations. I too wish the banquet scene made final cut. That would have been a true accomplishment. Great actors. Great visuals. Great sound, but the script is blah. Lynch was much more visionary by far. Especially in the spice dream sequences. Bottom line, after Jessica puked, I was done. The Chani ending was horrid. aGreat job! Great insights.
Lynch's DUNE IS TEN TIMES BETTER
@@LolitaDavidovich934 well, I would say that is objectively not true but feel free to enjoy it ten times more.
Damn right! Denis's version is dumbed down, and all the weirdness removed for the sake of appealing to mass audience. Lynch is a genius director that takes great risks and dares to embrace the darkness and venture into the mystic.
Sound guns…
This is a neat faction, though I think Raiders would be less problematic if it triggers on combat loss. Less win more, and makes opponent weigh which fights they want to win and when more than usual.
It is a double win for Mikarrol in battle and a double loss for their opponent. This is too much. Raiders should pick from the discards not from the opponent's hand. The threat of losing the discards makes the decision for the opponent more interesting instead of always playing your best cards because you'll probably lose them anyway.
Yor comment on the litany against fear was great. I have not seen much discussion around this. if youve read the book its hugely impactful. it feels like a cool quip in the movies Kudos
I watched the first a few times. Tolerating 3 actors in it that do not work for me. I can't grasp the Stilgar madness in the second movie. The second half of the second movie I found rushed and not Dune. I have zero desire to watch either ever again. Visually interesting. Pacing, chouces and actors spoilled the illusion
Amal can be specially nasty against Mikarrol.
Nasty used against them or used by them! If they get amal themselves they can use it on other players when they are spice poor, then sell some of their own forces to gain a lot of spice.
Seems like an overpowered faction in a way. And it is more dangerous in advanced with Raiders ability
@@RuslanCherryMissing it is potentially a rich get richer model if they sacrifice for spice and win fights. But if they lose, they just fall behind slightly more slowly than most others.
It’s not more OP then the other good dune factions at the top like BG. Cause at the end of the battle phase they have to discard down to 4 cards, so if they want to go into battle with extra you have to buy all those cards or win them in previous battles then they discard down.
@@blaisestritt8177 It is not that they can hold 4 cards but rather that they get the BEST 4 cards chosen from all the cards that they hold and capture, options. And they get this at the expense of their opponents.
