Tournemire arr. Duruflé - Cinq Improvisations (with score)
The five improvisations of Charles Tournemire, transcribed and edited by Maurice Duruflé, as played by Philippe Lefebvre at Chartres cathedral.
0:00 - Petite Rapsodie Improvisée
3:52 - Cantilène Improvisée
8:49 - Improvisation sur le "Te Deum"
16:04 - Fantaisie-Improvisation sur "Ave Maris Stella"
25:53 - Choral-Improvisation sur le "Victimae Paschali"
Charles Tournemire (1870-1939) served as the organist at the basilique Sainte-Clotilde in Paris. His modern-day claim to fame is his cycle "L'Orgue Mystique", a collection of organ mass settings for every Sunday of the church calendar. However, he was also a celebrated improviser. In 1930-1931 he recorded five of his improvisations for the phonograph. 25 years later, his former student and assistant Maurice Duruflé, by then a highly successful organist and composer, painstakingly transcribed these improvisations; his intimate knowledge of both the organ and the organist allowed him a level of detail rarely seen or surpassed since.
The organ at Ste-Clotilde, built by the famed Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, was a very idiosyncratic instrument. Duruflé included a preface detailing these aspects such as the unique sounds of combining the Foundations 8', Voix Céléste, Vox Humana and Tremolo, seen in e.g. the "Ave Maris Stella". Duruflé's transcriptions are also not completely literal; there a points where even Duruflé couldn't discern the exact notes, and he even made some additions of his own (although only when it would be characteristic for Tournemire also). Nevertheless, both the improvisations and transcriptions are extremely virtuosic. There is always structure, however; it is remarkable how they sound like written-out pieces. By transcribing them, Duruflé produced an immortal monument to the heights of French improvisation.

Duruflé - Scherzo op. 2 (with score)
มุมมอง 9K4 ปีที่แล้ว
The Scherzo op. 2 by Maurice Duruflé, as played by Olivier Latry at Duruflé's church of St. Étienne du Mont. The Scherzo was Duruflé's first published organ work, written in 1926 for a composition exam. Already, the 'orchestration' of the organ is very nuanced, with Duruflé's ethereal use of the organ comparable only to his organ teacher Charles Tournemire (to whom the work is dedicated). The w...

The Prélude et Fugue sur le nom d'Alain op. 7 by Maurice Duruflé, as played by Vincent Warnier at Duruflé's church of St. Étienne du Mont. Prélude - 0:00 Fugue - 6:35 Maurice Duruflé, despite writing only a very small body of works, is one of the most important French sacred composers of the 20th century. His Requiem Op. 9 is his most famous work, but he also wrote an important body of solo org...
Howells - Master Tallis's Testament (with score)
มุมมอง 12K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Master Tallis's Testament, No. 3 of the Six Pieces for Organ by Herbert Howells, performed by Thomas Trotter. Howells was one of the greatest of the English Romantic church composers; his many settings of the canticles are performed and recorded on a regular basis, and his influence can be seen in virtually all subsequent English and American sacred music. This work, one of his more performed o...
Mulet - Carillon-Sortie (with score)
มุมมอง 37K5 ปีที่แล้ว
The Carillon-Sortie by Henri Mulet, played by Gerard Brooks on the famous Cavaillé-Coll organ in St. Ouen, Rouen. Henri Mulet's surviving works are only a few in number and pratically solely for organ; however, among them are such masterpieces as the 'Esquisses Byzantines' as well as this carillon. It is striking how, this piece manages to conjure up a full and virtuosic texture despite a relat...
Elgar - Triumphal March arr. Lemare (with score)
มุมมอง 2.6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
The Triumphal March from "Caractacus" op. 35 by Edward Elgar, arranged for organ by Edwin Lemare, played by Adrian Partington on the organ of the Albert Hall, Nottingham. Lemare made many transcriptions of Elgar's orchestral music, including a famous one of the Pomp and Circumstance no. 1 that is still the main organ arrangement of that work today. As can be seen from the manual indications and...

The Prelude and Fugue in B Major op. 7 no. 1 by Marcel Dupré, played by Yves Castagnet on the organ of Notre-Dame de Paris. Prelude - 0:00 Fugue - 3:12 Marcel Dupré was one of the greatest organists of the 20th Century. He established a style of playing that became the dominant in France, based on an absolute legato. Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 (with score)

The famous Bach Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 as performed by Ton Koopman on the 1693 Arp Schnitger organ in St Jacobi, Hamburg. Toccata - 0:00 Fugue - 2:41 The organ is tuned at A=495.5 in meantone temperament, so sounds completely different to modern organs. Koopman is very free with the tempo and ornamentation, creating a very improvisatory feel suitable to the 'stylus phantasticus' w...

Rumor has it that Dupre wrote the prelude as a kind of friendly "I can do better than that!" showing off to his tutor, Widor, after hearing Widor's Symphony #5 Toccata.

The pitch in this recording is off sometimes - more noticeable in certain places and not at all in others so I'm not really sure what's happening!...might that be the way this organ is pitched, or something that happened in the audio file processing here?

I love Henri Mulet and this is a great performance - but am I the only one that wonders whether Mulet had real difficulty in how to end any of his works? His climaxes a wonderful and well earned - but then he appears to get stuck on how to follow it up. If it is just me then so be it.

It's kind of hard to swallow the "tuned about a tone higher". It sounds more like Koopman hit the transpose button before recording and ended up playing the whole thing in E minor. I am not an organ proficianado, but if an organ is truly tuned for A to be at 495.5, then EVERY SINGLE PIECE played with other instruments would have to be transposed down a whole step. It just doesn't make sense.

Outstanding performance! The lack of the reverberation is regrettable, but all the more advantageous for the transparency of these highly virtuosic pieces. Nevertheless there are better possibilities to mix in spacial sound.

Interesting point, indeed! Makes sense, considering that there are films that show him improvise double fugues on spot. And this is essentially the same technique you need for making a cantus firmus-based piece like this. Still an insane and almost inhuman level of counterpoint skill, especially because it is integrated in such a personal and recognizable style of harmony.
