Join me on the journey of learning and sharing about my first RV experience. I purchased a 1996 Fleetwood Southwind 35 foot motorhome on a Ford chassis that needs some "TLC"...a lot. Come along as I begin the renovation and numerous repairs to get this once four year dormant RV back on the road and fully functional. As if that isn't challenging enough, I am doing the work all by myself (mostly) and I have to figure it out as I go!

Thx south wind. This was detailed and all should watch this before spending $$$ for a mechanic to do a 15 minute job. If you repair/rebuild your ebrake please post your experience!
I’m doing this, the carpeting is a great idea cause my rotted wall is in the drivers area too
Did you use carpeting because the original wall paper/covering is no longer available from Fleetwood. I have a Southwind also with water damage in the same area.

My electric step will not remain retracted in off position. What could be the problem?
Make sure you have a good ground connection. Also check your on/off switch to be sure it is functioning properly.
Good video, going out to try this on my 1997 Itasca today. This is the only thing pending inspection.
All campers end up leaking and falling apart i feel like they should all come with a free 32 gauge pin nailer

Im a new rv owner i got a 1994 fleetwood p30 model Anyways i have a similar issue but my parking brake symbol pops up when i put it in drive but goes away when its in park any ideas
that would be the hyd auto park break located at the end of trans. lots of info on youtube.
I’ve been looking for good four season truck campers. The only ones I find all have some form of water damage which has kept me from being interested. But having some confidence from building normal houses and after watching your video I can see that it doesn’t have to be as daunting. I found a nice 95 alpenlite 11’ for $3500
Same boat, thankfully there are tons of videos walking you through how to fix.

What do I do if the metal beams are rusted out ?
The beams in wall construction for campers are aluminum so they shouldn’t rust at all let alone rust to the point of not even being usable
Excellent video It helped me get my steps working I had a loose 4 wire connection
You answered my main obstacle to replacing my step controller. How to get the steps to extend when they fail to function when the door opens. My steps were working intermittently. I had replaced the motor and gearbox 2 years ago, so they should be good. All the Lippert and Etrailer videos had the steps already out or loose. Your partial install to open the steps and verify the new controller works solved my issue. Thank you Sir.

Thank you could you let me know what type thickness of wood you used please.
If your steps are stuck make sure your RV is level. Our motor home didn’t look too out of level to me when our steps got stuck closed. My wife insisted we just needed to level the RV as the steps were likely bound up. Once again, she was right.

All Fleetwoods do that there. Condensation. That's not from leaks. It's the front cap collecting condensation.

Nice! Simple do it yourself tips its good for everyone.People should help themselves more oftten rather than wait for compagnies to work for them .And what a nice feeling when you did it yourself!

Many of the cranes I used to drive,Had this setup.Most of them would slip because folks would drive with that brake on.Trucks with normal emergency brakes also didn't hold.Same reason folks would drive with the brake engaged.
I would have used some Red Guard on the back of the wood to seal an offer future leak protection.
The problem with that is your sealing from inside out. You may keep that water out of the interior but then it’s trapped in the wall
If you lay it flat & get it damp it will remove all creases

I must have hit something on the road that tore the wires for the steps out. I have 4 wires not connected to anything and can not seem to find a diagram showing how these wires connect.
What kind of wood do I use if I'm replacing a part of my wall on the back part of rv?
