    What thing is sticking in the top hole? I bought an older Duncan kiln and such thing didn’t come with it!

    • @arkansaspotter7250
      @arkansaspotter7250 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's some sort of plug. I tried to look around for it online but I wasn't able to find anything. It's defiantly a different shape and material from the peep hole plugs. It seems like a vent hole because the plug is a slightly loose fit and it's a small hole. I bet that missing the plug doesn't really affect firing.

    Very helpful troubleshooting for someone who has no idea on this stuff. I’m looking at buying the same unit as you have here. They want $300. They said they bought it 3 years ago (but can’t remember where they bought it) and haven’t used it the 3 years they have had it due to no 220 outlet. Would you recommend this is a good deal? It has 2 shelves and some feet, but missing the top peep hole. Thanks again!

    • @arkansaspotter7250
      @arkansaspotter7250 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that sounds like a really good deal. I think I got this one for around $200-$250. New kilns cost close to $2500 at the cheap end. Even if you have to replace some elements in the kiln I think it will be cheaper than buying new. You should also be able to buy a replacement peep hole plug pretty easily.

    It would help to know standard temperature for greenware and for glaze fire.

    • @arkansaspotter7250
      @arkansaspotter7250 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some standard temperatures, but it really depends on what clay you use and the glazes you use. If you buy commercial glazes they will recommend a bisque temperature that works best with their glaze and will say what temperature the glaze matures at. And you want to buy a clay that matures at the same temperature or higher than your glaze. Hope that makes sense and helps.

    Just got a Duncan DK820-2 and looking forward to trying it; Yes, this helped A LOT - Thanks for the tutorial! Did the timer need to be replaced after all, or was the knob just stuck or something? Thanks! Best!

    • @arkansaspotter7250
      @arkansaspotter7250 ปีที่แล้ว

      The timer still doesn't work. But it's just a back up, to turn the kiln off if the kiln sitter fails. I just make sure to stay nearby and check that the kiln sitter turned the kiln off, before I leave it to cool down.

      😅 Late response but, it's just something the dry clay does when put in water. It's a process called slaking. Absorbing water after being dry just causes the clay to break down.

    Small suggestion, other than slowing down, when trimming a pot on a chuck, keep one hand on the pot while trimming, that way it won't go flying if it comes off the chuck. But also, keep up the great work!

    The one that partially collapsed in is probably because of too much water. Others are because of uneven pulling (probably derived from not centering well) I can't see the actual speed of the wheel but I've got the feeling that it's too fast. Try also standing up for the pulling. When triming, the support you used as you realized is not a good idea, you can do a similar thing supporting the vase from outside but still, you probably used too much force. Try inclining the tool so the edge becomes almost perpendicular to the vase, that way you will need to press less. It can also be because it's not well re centered. Don't have much tips here but a lot of patience.

    I believe there is an easier way. Drop the pieces into the bucket, then break them up with a wooden 2" dowel end. Once they are in much smaller pieces the level of the pile is lower and requires much less water to soften the mix. Each day stir the slurry with a paddle until the mix is pourable and then pour it out onto a large plastic sheet Keep checking it until it is not sticky and then begin to gather it up and wedge it.

    • @arkansaspotter7250
      @arkansaspotter7250 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. I see where you're coming from, but breaking up clay creates clay dust which is dangerous because it can build up in your lungs and cause Silicosis, also called Potters Rot. I would also recommend using canvas or a wood board or wet rated drywall for drying the clay, if you don't have a plaster slab. Plastic isn't porous so the clay can't dry on the bottom. Having a porous surface will allow the clay to dry more evenly.
