The video game was pretty good...i played da game b4 i saw da movie hahah
I just watched a few episodes of the series (Videogamez, The Mayan Ice Cream Maker, Zoo Cups, Glam Vampire Hunterz) all I can say it's a lot of brain rot and too bright for my taste.
Gonna go out on a limb here but believe it or not black families like the Cosby's actually do exist, despite what mainstream media tries to brainwash you to believe. I'm a product of it.
I never liked TH-cam poops or loud videos (tiktok and vine hater here) but this show and others like Uncle Granpa
32:00 for some reason I found AJ's reaction entertaining. Also, i look forward to the day when there are less video commentary regarding the subject of racial identity within fictional stories.
"Hey Danny! If you could control a girl for just about 2 minutes..." - Actual line from Tucker Foley.
When we were little we thought this show was called “Steve Urkle”
hey... all of them are quality characters honestly repetitive as hell but honestly all of them are great imma be honest
Can we call this design style, “Urkelism”? Or “Urkism”? Nvmd lol I looked it up & its already called that💯
Pee Wee is not a nerd...
I grew up as "Steve Urkle". I didn't like it at first as I wanted to be Stefan Urquelle! I eventually learned to embrace it. But after watching this video, I recall that everyone who ever did call me Urkle, was White, with one exception (who was Hispanic).
40 years? Family Matters just turned 35 last year. Anyways, not only was Steve Urkel the first sitcom character I was exposed to on TV as I was starting school back in '96 (via early season reruns on TBS), but Family Matters was the first sitcom I actually watched in full (other sitcoms, then, only captured my interest until the theme song intro was done)
So many of *THIS* character when I grew up. Made Numbuh 5 so cool by comparison.
Oh, this was an Urkel thing? I always assumed it was a mostly white writing staff going "We need a token black guy for our show, but let's make him nerdy as all hell and put his charisma stat to 0, see it's the opposite of the stereotype, so no one can have a problem with Irwin/Tucker/The Blue Ranger from Dino Thunder, etc."
I just had a weird, vivid memory of "Let me. Take you. To the edge, tonight."
I hated these characters. I remember as a kid thinking it was racist how the black kid always had to be a lame nerd. Yet I loved Urkel, so something was clearly lost in translation
To be fair, nerdy black boys who were weird were most of my exposure to black people. As a lower middle-class white kid who dreamed of writing comics and animation, i was a bit of an outcast and nerd myself.
This is so funny. Hilarious, even.
I love these characters that do not have offensive stereotypes, especially these characters really feel like people.
A lotta of those kinda Urkel effects styled characters had a lot of unique and totally good plots in their episodes.
Don’t forget Malcom’s friend on Malcom in the middle
Stopped watching cuz jeez man you really play into the black victim mentality, don’t you? It’s really cringy, saying stuff like the CN staff “didn’t care” about black people in the 90s is ridiculous. It’s one thing to say that they didn’t care about anything else besides their bottom line, but it’s pretty ridiculous to say that they just didn’t care about black people specifically, in the 90s when racial tensions were lower than now on account of there being so many race baiters like you these days. Also what a damn whiner you are, “oh my god, they made black characters stereotypically the genius in shows from the 90s to mid 2ks” like so what? That’s a good character trait, is there anything that black people like you won’t complain about? You’re the kind of black guy that everyone including other black people roll their eyes at when you go on about “modern racial injustice” that you have to grasp at straws to show examples of. It still happens, but way less frequently than people like you think and or like to make it seem like and it just becomes pretty tiresome to people who don’t buy into every narrative targeted towards someone like them. Which is luckily becoming more common as shown by Trump getting more black voters than any republican president for as long time.
I LOVE UKREL YOU LOVE URLEL WE ALL STAN FOR URKEL
Love this video! Hard to think it's been 40 years since Family Matters. 😮
Hey, great video :D Seeing this pattern pointed out is reminding us of all the white characters in media around the same time who also filled that "socially incompetent, hyper-intelligent techie nerd" archetype. (Something something writers treating autism like an inhuman superpower) In a way it feels like a lot of the bits you gave as examples could've been written identically if the characters were white instead, and that makes me wonder if there's something about the nerd archetype that writers of the era purposefully thought... Idk if this'll come across right,, like it was an archetype they were "allowed" to write black characters into? In a similar way how cartoons acted like there were only 3-ish personalities you were allowed to have if you were a girl, to be a bit facetious.
surprised wade from kim possible didn't pop up here even as a flash
This was a very fine video! I gotta give props to JD, A.K.A. IQ, from Bionic Six, who was very much a glasses-wearing black boy genius, but wasn't an annoying nerd. He was extremely intelligent, intellectual, super strong, and I'd dare to say, a little on the debonair side compared to what's come down the pipeline since. I'd also like to show love to Paul from Dinosaucers, who was another bespectacled black male who was intelligent and soft-spoken without being an annoying nerd. Both cartoons are from the late 80s.
You forgot to put AJ on the thumbnail. Even though he is bald and have no glasses, he is STILL a nerd like Urkel.
Tv comedies
Maybe white writers wanted to try and encourage black kids to aspire to something academic with the black nerd characters. Since they often fall short of other races in that area. I don't think you were being presented with lazy writing, I think they were trying to social engineer away from violent crime and collecting welfare.
No boondocks huh
Quinn was my favorite Zoey 101 character in HS. I had a HUGE crush on her for who she was when being gay was still socially forbidden.
My Friday nights from the age of 10 to about 14 was dinner then TGIF.
Cool video!
when you say black and brown people what people are yea reffering to when yea say brown? cause most that are depicted when mentioning this is just mostly black people
Someone called me retarded urkel and I now love it. I may not be as smart as urkel but I've got cooler glasses
this was my favorite movie growing up. i could quote it frontwards and backwards 😂
I think the "black nerd" character was so popular because it portrayed black male youth in a comfortable way for white audiences. Characteristics like angry, sexually/socially confident, tough, strong, etc, were threatening to a lot of white America, as the dominant stereotype for black men for generations was the "angry, violent black man who 'stole' white women." So black nerds (chill, socially awkward, often anxious or outright cowardly , etc) were a way to incorporate black males while excising any characteristics that might be seen as threatening to an audience that, in some ways, feared black males due to longstanding harmful stereotypes.
alright settle down, there.
we love Root Beer Guy in this household
Craig is one of my favorite newer cartoons, it's one of the comfiest, cute shows out there. I love how the whole creek crew gets fleshed out and we get to see glimpses into all their lives. at the same time, it's in no hurry to throw all the cards on the table so it takes its time getting there. it reminds me a bit of what Arthur was for my generation way back when
i hated wearing my glasses because of this
Back in those days kids did not want to wear glasses
Every black boy who wore glasses was called out of their name because of urkel
In mexico there is a character from cartoon network live action show: LA CQ called "Beto" i would like yo see yout thoughts about this character, i think Your video is amazing and this character its related to the urkel effect
Wait what the fuck Pac was on Fresh Prince!?
Great breakdown and review love your insights on this topic
