How to use imageJ to measure cell length
มุมมอง 808ปีที่แล้ว
This is an instructional video on how to use ImageJ from NIH to measure cell length. We use it in my lab to measure the cell length of a spirochete genera called Leptospira, but this tutorial can be used for others to learn how to measure many other bacteria, fibers, etc. whilst using ImageJ. Enjoy.

Lake Compounce Campground Video Survey and Review
มุมมอง 828ปีที่แล้ว
This is Lake Compounce Campground or Bear Creek Campground located in Bristol CT. The campground itself is fine for what it is (it's not a get in touch with nature campground, it's for convenience to the amusement park), but the unusually loud and annoying hum from the neighboring energy generating incinerator plant that runs 24/7 makes this unfortunately a no repeat site for my family. #campin...
Norway Island in Middle Saranac Lake- Video Overview
มุมมอง 668ปีที่แล้ว
I noticed when booking a site in Middle Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks there were no photos/ videos of the sites. I hope this helps! A few extra things to note: 1) you have to book this site in advance through ReserveAmerica- it works out to about 25/ night for the Island 2) There is cell reception on the island. My friend uses AT&T and had 2 bars of LTE anywhere on the island. I use T Mobile ...
Deer Tick Close Up of Mouth Parts
มุมมอง 2582 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video you can see a close up/ microscopic view of a nymphal deer tick's mouthparts. The part moving is called the hypostome, and you can see the individual chelicerae. The chelicerae are like small knives. They are what the tick moves to slowly cut into the skin to cement itself and begin the blood meal, which occurs by pool feeding over a period of days.

      Good question and yes- Leptospira can squeeze through .22 micron pores, so you need to use .1 micron pore size filters. I hope this information helps!

      Thanks very much for the positive feedback! Yes, their behavior is quite interesting and predictable. This means avoiding them in nature is somewhat possible by following simple rules, such as using 25%-30% DEET, certain areas in the forest, etc.

    the open field behind my house is full of dog ticks. A few questions; 1. Can ticks sense if an area around them has alot of animal activity, and then move to that area say several feet away in order to quest there? Ive recently noticed the trails i use to move around are all of a sudden full of ticks that werent there a few days ago. 2. Does long term exposure to DEET kill a tick or only repulse it?

    • @thepappaslab4783
      @thepappaslab4783 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi- good questions! 1) Yes- ticks can detect carbon dioxide trails and can move around based on certain signals such as this. They can be found on trails that animals take (e.g.- if you are using a trail, it's possible mice are using it, too). Keep your yard grass short to help prevent this (less than 2 inches if possible). For dog ticks (D. variabilis), they are known to be nidiculous- this means they can set up in a dog house, etc. 2) DEET is a repellent- it repulses ticks, but won't kill them. Permethrin (sometimes marketed as Damminix- it's the same product as Nix for head lice) is an acaricide and should kill ticks shortly after exposure. Permethrin is also residual, so once you spray, it stays around for a prolonged period (usually up to 4-6 weeks, depending on rain exposure, etc.). I hope this information helps!
