    Notch added four animals, a cow, a pig, a chicken and a sheep, and those four mobs alone hold nearly the entire game on their shoulders with their functionality. Mojang added dozens of mobs. A number of them doesn't even do anything Thats the difference between how it used to be and how it is now

    Here's an out of the box idea. Remove XP and rework enchanting. It now requires strange, rare items like brewing does (or should). Use blaze powder for Fire Aspect, use amethyst for Sharpness (and strength potions), use Armadillo shells for Protection. I find exploration much, much more fun than XP farming/grinding, or villager breeding, but the rewards are mismatched to the gameplay.

    you've actually touched on my exact issue with minecraft, and you went about presenting the problem very concisely. i just wish they would add variety in exploration in little ways; there doesn't need to be a useless item or some forgotten material to find there.. just start adding variety to the world generation and add new crafting recipes for existing materials

    Alot of the stuff just feels like "modders will add more uses to these items" or "modders will have fun with this lets add it" i have seen many concept videos as to how copper could be used and that makes it feel like even more wasted potential (one was a copper golem that can only walk on powered redstone dust - to create a defence grid - and boy that was the coolest thing i have ever seen/heard)

    While still a little special to me, I dont think minecraft is a very good game and this is a part of the reason. Whats the point of hunting down bamboo for scaffolding if I can just dig up some dirt and build up to where I need to be? Whats the point of mining copper and amethyst for a spyglass when I could just, I dunno, walk over to what I want to look at? Whats the point of all these new stone types that appear in caves? Inventory clutter? Everything they've added just feels like distractions and inconveniences, you could play the newest version the exact same way you'd play version 1.0.0 and still beat the game just fine

  • @Wyti
    @Wyti 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I have noticed this very problem, and Im very happy you have too. One solution would be a magic system. Niche potion materials, phantom membranes, amethyst, it could all get a use in a niche little utility spell or two. Not a vanilla suitable idea but mods already implement this, only in a parasitic way.

    Honestly if Minecraft had a whole update that added literally nothing and instead just focused on giving a bunch of interconnections between all these dead end features it would be quite possibly its best update of all time. Nothing crazy, just like small datapack level changes. Like why does archeology not get you swords and tools or something? like just enchanted iron or diamond or something? There's already so much here, they just need to actually have updates about *UPDATING* instead of just adding more vanity content.

    When you play big modpack (especially on older versions) you want to make sure that you have good supplies of random vanilla stuff like stone (smelted), leather, ink sacks, blaze rods, glowstone, soul sand, ender pearls because they are used in a lot of different crafts. Of course you can continue that least but notice a fun pattern: there are nearly no recently added items in this list. Modmakers stopped caring about new items. Long ago. Around 1.7.10

    The criticism I've heard is they'd never add the creeper today. Imagine that. Most iconic mob and Mojang would be too scared to add something that would upset a creeperless world. If they did, they'd make it exclusive to jungle edge biomes and you'd have to compost it's drop first before obtaining gunpowder from it for fear of ruining the balance.

  • @samadkins6727
    @samadkins6727 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    This video and comment section doesn't understand minecraft at all, they specifically add things only if it will add something new to the game, that's why there's tons of animals in the world that drop leather but they've only added a few that also have other abilities, it would make metas and everything useless, if you ACTUALLY play the game for longer then the 2 week phase or beating the ender dragon you can use every item and everything makes since and you actually explore or build farms to obtain every item, this is the first time I've seen this said as a problem and it's insane

  • @filthycasual6118
    @filthycasual6118 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I stopped playing around 1.12, so I missed most of the new content. My thoughts: exploration and base construction have intrinsic value, and you cheapen the experience by forcing players who want specific items to go places they wouldn't go otherwise just to get them. I see inventory bloat as a separate but equally important issue. Highly-niche recipes really do need to be generalized, and highly-niche resources need multiple ways to utilize them. These two problems intertwine a bit, because those new places tend to have new things attached to them, to incentivize you to go there. At this point, you're not looking for ocean temples or amethyst geodes because you like the aesthetic, but as part of a checklist: you want X, Y, or Z and this is the place you go to get the stuff you need for it. EDIT: The bloat isn't what drove me away from the game, but it's part of the reason I haven't come back. Modern Minecraft feels like a very disjointed modpack from 2014.

    why is rabbit hide even in the game? its not like rabbits were the only animals to be skinned in history, if there is no such item for any other animal other than leather, and that leather that had already been in the game could easily fulfill any potential use for rabbit hide, what the heck is it even doing in the game. Please just hire a competent game director mojang

    I think adding a "Research" mechanic could help the single use item issue massively. Perhaps to make a Spyglass, you unlock the recipe by crafting it using amethyst and copper. Once unlocked, you gain alternative recipes that use more accessible materials. Minecraft already partially has this mechanic in the form of unlocking entries in the recipe book once you get a material for the first time. To allow farming players who don't want to explore a way out, perhaps these recipes could be randomly learned from the Enchanting Table (or similar block). This would let farmers grind for recipe alternatives and explorers to seek the materials through exploration.

    Mojang not only needs to reevaluate its purpose with its release of contents, it needs to grow the confidence to change the progression, to address major concerns promptly, and not be afraid to add the mundane. Sure you gave us sniffers, but we're okay with goats and frogs, just make them all useful. It says a lot how people were excited for 1.16 when Diamond was trounced by Netherite after 10 years, or the cave expansion where reaching diamond now has (a little) more challenge. I like the ocean puddle analogy. Mojang really needs to stop hammering away at the shores and put on their snorkels and dig deeper. People WILL talk if the game became more interesting, even if no new features were added. Will finally add: Mojang. Chest for 8 planks? Now do 4 planks, 4 iron ingots, and chest and you can have a bigger chest. Iron and planks have use, but it compounds and we get more storage. Other games do this, doesn't mean you have to shy away from anything like it either.

    Every time I play minecraft, I think of issues that people ignore because they are good players. I remember seeing a video on the "inventory crisis", and the guy basically said "There already is a solution to the inventory problem, shulker boxes!" All I could think about was how I've NEVER beaten the ender dragon, even with probably hundreds of hours in minecraft! I think the game has a lot of features that are very annoying because if they were changed it might make things overpowered in like high-skill PvP or something. I think they really need to add more stuff for low-skill players, which is the VAST majority of the playerbase. The chisel was a great example you showed in this video: yes there is silk touch, but I don't wanna spend 10 hours grinding to make a villager trading hall when I'll probably get bored in a week anyways!

    So, you’re complaining about items having too few uses, but also dislike when they get some kind of use (like how copper is used for spyglass and brush), and also suggest adding biomes/structures with no use/new blocks/items at all? If you didn’t have to use amethyst in order to craft a spyglass, people would complain that amethyst doesn’t have enough use. And regarding the armadillo scute for wolf armor, would you just then prefer the armadillo to not have any use at all, making it useless? And I really don’t get your point about not throwing away stuff. If it’s useless or you already have a farm for it, what’s wrong with just throwing it away? I do agree that there are some instances where they could have given items more uses (like echo shards) or are somewhat pointless (I don’t see the need for having disc fragments instead of just finding the Deep Dark disc as itself but making it rarer than the fragments), but most of your takes I think are pretty invalid. Yea rabbit hides don’t have that many uses, but I don’t think they were added to be a farm animal, and instead added to be a cute pet. Honestly it just seems like it’s become trendy to complain about the game, even though 99% of the arguments they make are either invalid or pointless. But if that’s what’s get views then be my guest I guess

    • @fewpew5787
      @fewpew5787 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think you misunderstood what he's saying. Items like the spyglass and brush could've easily and realistically been crafted with gold or iron instead of these new minerals they've added, and if they were craftable with existing minerals, copper and amethyst don't have any use. So why add them in the first place? Same with wolf armor, it easily and realistically could've been crafted with leather or iron or something but instead it takes armadillo scutes. Why? Kind of seems like they just used the wolf armor as an excuse for armadillos having a purpose when existing items already in the game could've easily been used to make the armor, and if those existing items were used, armadillos would be pointless. So they never really had a good reason to be in minecraft in the first place. Just a bunch of flashy distractions from the players main objective in my opinion.

    • @Rene4nd
      @Rene4nd 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@fewpew5787 but amethyst and copper has so many other uses? So what’s the problem with giving them more uses? Honestly, the least used component in the brush crafting recipe is the feather, but I don’t see people complaining about feathers being in the game… And with the armadillo, well that’s exactly the thing that people voted for. If another mob had won there would have been the possibility for wolf armor to be crafted for in other ways, but people voted for the armadillo knowing that they would pretty much only have that one use. Honestly, since spiders are afraid of armadillos in the game, Mojang actually gave it more uses than just the scute - but of course people never mention that, so there point comes out stronger.

    None of the inventory related complaints really make all that much sense to me when you think of how much stuff they actually added over time to help with this kind of problem, they have llamas now, mules, boats, mine-carts with chests, ender chests, and shulker boxes. Each storage solution also marks a point of progress in the larger game. I don’t know how the solutions that you proposed do anything but contribute to the ‘clash in design and mechanical interaction’ that you claim there already is. IMHO I’m really happy with the current state of Minecraft as I think it actually adds diversity and gives the players subtle freedom to settle or adopt a play style catered to them while simultaneously balancing the invisible hand of the developer that encourages or influences each player to have similar yet varied experiences with the game individually.

    (mainly replying to the first third of this video) It feels like balancing like this is a game of whack a mole. If wolf armor could be made with multiple materials, one of the materials would never get used by players because it's harder to get. But if it only can be made with one of the materials, then it's annoying to get that one material for that one use. It's not an impossible game of whack a mole, but fixing these takes more than one simple change. I guess you'd have to have more materials compared to items made from the materials? (later parts of the video) I bet you could make a datapack for this. Either make turtles, armadillos, and rabbits drop leather, or make leather an item tag and change the leather recipes. (though that would be less compatible with modded mc) Could also use the cutommodeldata flag to have different visuals for items crafted different ways. And, as someone who started playing in January 2010, I think I stopped playing vanilla survival as much when the game got less scary because sprinting was added without buffing the speed of mobs. I think I managed to fix this with an 8 command long datapack though, which makes mobs sprint when you sprint near them. >:) (also they made darkness not be pitch black anymore, but again, resourcepack shader can fix it) I might've also stopped playing modded more recently because I got distracted with datapacks, lol.

    I think that Mojang has fundamentally misunderstood game development since 1.13. It’s honestly embarrassing how slow their development team works, with them taking 6 months to add one or two niche, mediocre features. I really just think it comes down to laziness and not knowing what the community wants, because all the changes they make do very little to the gameplay loop of Minecraft. What they should do is take in community feedback, and start polling to see what features people want, like how Old School RuneScape does updates. Also they should learn how to get their several hundred employees to make more than three features every six months.

Sparkling Spyglass Gold x1, Copper x1, Glass Pane x1, Glowstone Dust x1. A spyglass that can see players with the spectral effect, as long as that player has been looked at through it from at most a distance of 20 blocks once before. Super Spyglass Gold x1, Copper x1, Amethyst x1, Glowstone Dust x1. A spyglass that can both detect players with the spectral effect, and make it appear it's daytime when used.

    you know this video made me think. does minecraft really have an inventory crisis? or does it have a useless item crisis. thinking of how many times ive been mining/caving and ill have my inventory fill up with a bunch or iron/gold/diamonds etc but ill perpeptually have a couple blocks of andesite/granite/diorite that are all in esscence just stone. and its the same with food. inventory(s) will fill up with steak/chicken/pork when in reality they are all just re-textures of the same item that do the same thing. (outside of chicken being less hunger filling). theres too much useless stuff in the game. items and mobs isnt what the game needs. maybe the game needs to be return to its 'simpler' roots. this video really made me think. the title was fitting by having it as "an open discussion". Ps - i do think the additions of the extra stone blocks like the afforementioned and also deepslate are nice for building but i think my argument although weak still stands. another point id like to add is the bundle is shit and the travellers backpack mod would of been a lot better system imo as someone who mostly plays survival and doesnt do mega builds

    Not only do I think this 'feature bloat' thing that Minecraft has a problem because of bad game design, but I think its a problem because it takes away time that could have been spent adding very easy QOL improvements to the game. Why are gap fix texture packs still a thing in 2024? Was the armadillo, glowsquid, chorus fruit, phantoms etc. really more important than fixing the gap texture problem? Why can't I change the key for the debug overlay? Why are free performance enhancing mods still necessary for so many players in 2024 when optimization is something that should be done by the devs, not the community.

    Ok. Here is my hot take. Mojang shouldn't be updating MC. They do add many things with almost each update that makes the game generally better. However with each good feature comes a bad/useless one. We've asked Mojang for years for an autocrafter, and they did just now make one. Yet the modding community agrees that it is one of the worst forms of this block anyone has ever seen. The constant amount of items added with no real storage features beyond shulkers and ender chests. The useless mobs that provide us even more useless items. (Clownfish, sniffers, frogs, goats, etc.) When are we getting the modding support you promised us, Mojang? The modding community fixes your issues, makes your game far better, and gives you more feedback than Mojang is willing to read. Mojang has so many people that are willing to provide content for MC. Why is Mojang ignoring them? Why isn't Mojang giving us the tools to make things easier? If Mojang embraced the modding community maybe the rest of MC's community would follow. Maybe item bloat has been solved already. Maybe people have added thousands of single use items, and provided just enough to make each a valuable endeavor. The issue isn't that Mojang does update their game. They just lack the inspiration. Unlike the rest of the world that loves their game.

    I fully agree with you! Having a material just to craft one other item is just stupid. I definitely haven't played terraria as much as minecraft, but they do a way better job in having their items be "useful" Good job on the video :)

    This is precisely one of the reasons I've stopped playing Vanilla. I spent several days building a huge "state of the art" storage system from a tutorial with an auto sorter and everything. But the darn thing would never work and it was completely not fun at all. Inventory management and storage in this game is impossible.

    i think theres multiple answers to many of the questions and examples you used, to the point where some are so fundamentally different that im not so sure why they are grouped together aside from being a "one trick pony" which in itself is rather meaningless to me. The game has a rather shallow progression system, i know plenty of people complain about that but i disagree strongly with those complaints. the progresion is simple, and very accessible in almost all circumstances, adding more to that progression would really only serve negatively (for a really long list of reasons, every upside you can argue usually has like multiple larger downsides). So what can you add to the game then? if meaningfully changing it would only hurt it, all you can do is padd out the optional side content, making the game very wide in the midgame (the endgame is arguably wider, as you can do more, but a lot of side content would have lost any reason for doing it besides just to do it or to collect special things, so its debatable whether thats actually wider there) and i think that is fine. a lot of casual fun can be had with those midgame features if you stumble into them but you rarely require them which prevents them from becoming annoyances instead of side content. and casual is an important word here, the main audiance for minecraft is a casual one However while i dont have an issue with the structure or "one trick ponies", i do understand some of the other arguments, some i agree with others i do not For crafting and unusual resource choices, the simple answer is that a lot of the alternative, expected resources generally already have way to many uses, and some old items have almost none. **[Rabbit hide has existed for a very long time, giving it a use in the bundle isnt bad, even if leather doesnt have that many uses either. Removing features is not something Mojang seems to entertain, so if they made a mistake 10 years ago, they will have to live with it forever]** Additionally, new recipees using new items/new mechanics isnt inherintly bad, and makes sense design wise as it creates a bond giving eachother a meaning, even if that might not be the most impactful meaning it is still better than nothing. I do agree that sometimes this does create issues like niche requirements or dead end resources, but the expected answer to those is that future features will build upon them (something that we have seen happen a few times, but to many people we see it too little or too slowly, but it still is an active design choice we know they are making) However if handled poorly that can create more issues that you might realise. 'Many dead end optional features' are a preferable situation over 'widespread but required and deeply intertwined features'. I know this might be controversial to say but think about questbook modpacks, they are very good at giving one specific playing experiance and showing you through all that is in the modpack, but would be terrible outside of its very specific context, doubly so for a casual audiance. Noone wants a side features voltron for something desirable. For a lack of "redundant" features, this one is simple but unfortunate. Giving new features, esp mobs, more overlap with older existing features would absolutely make them more meaningful and useful. Yet it would inversely make older features less so, and older features are already barebones **[Giving goats mutton while good for the goat, would thrash the cow, as now the goat is just a better cow (goats can be milked already btw).]** One trick ponies are, imo, marginally better than mechanically redundant features or "feature creeping" older things with newer ones, but that is debatable. I do think they try to be respectful of older features and would rather give new ones entirely new interactions, for better or worse The food thing i just do not get. inventory bloat is an issue yet we need more different foods? not only are mob drops the most uninteresting way to interact with a feature or mob, we already have enough accessible foods. the only possible reasonable takeaway i can get is that you think new foods should be more than just food, which is fine, and they usually are but i suppose they could be expanded to do more Inventory crisis. i'll keep it simple, we know there are problems with the inventory. mojang knows there are problems with the inventory. most "fixes" people propose are bandaid fixes or inneffective. i hope mojang can figure out enough solutions sooner rather than later but yes, its an issue they know it is Overall i think the actual biggest issue isnt the existence of underdevelopped midgame content, but rather the update cycle and community expectations around them. Mojang would be best if they spent the next few updates mainly cleaning up the game, fixing technical debt and overhauling old systems and features to be better, they could also updated newer features in tandem with old feature overhauls so they can work together better and both have more content without stepping on eachothers mechanical toes so much. However, we all know that people would hate them for this. People want "content", anything that isnt a new addition, no matter the amount of work or the impact to the game, will be ignored or called "easy"/"something they shouldve done already" and people will continue to call them lazy. Any nerfs or rebalances to old systems will get panned to some degree (esp nerfs, people hate nerfs even if they complain about something being OP) Currently Mojang is at an odd middleground between giving people what they want (a lot of 'slop' content often) and doing what is best for the game (back end changes, overhauls and high quality content) where what they now produce is polished 'slop' with a side of back end updates

      an addition i didnt comment on yet. about exploration, the idea of adding new biomes/structures/world features that are rare and their reward is just that you get to see them and nothing more is, well, it's the same issue as most new mobs is it not? not that i think this isnt a thing that they can or should be doing, but i do find it weird that you make it out to be a good motivator for explorations while the "useless" mobs are a bad one. they're the same thing, just one is a mob and the other is a place. just a thing to go look at and then move on or have around for ambiance
