23 April, 2014 Bluetit male feeding female brooding nine eggs
The bluetit is now brooding, only leaving the nest for short periods to get food. After she returns here, the male comes in to feed her.

17 April 2014 Buetit has laid five eggs
มุมมอง 15710 ปีที่แล้ว
After thinking that the two eggs laid earlier had somehow disappeared, this morning she left the nest revealing five eggs. She is still spending most of the time outside the nest apart from roosting at night. Unfortunately, I am using an old video link mechanism that doesn't record sound as I can't find my newer one.
Bluetits nesting 2014 - brooding eggs: 17 April

After a year's absence, a bluetit is again using the nestbox. She has laid five eggs so far and roosts each night, although still away during most of the daylight hours.
Bluetit fledglings have flown the nest - Day 21: May 22, 2012
มุมมอง 2.1K12 ปีที่แล้ว
I started recording at 4.45 a.m. this morning and both chicks were still in the nest. The first one flew at 6.35 a.m. leaving the other one looking rather lonely. The parent came in several times to feed the one left inside and it finally flew the nest at 7.30 a.m. It's a lovely, warm, sunny day so ideal conditions. I have since spotted one of them in the undergrowth behind the garden shed. I'v...
Bluetit fledglings still practising - Day 20: May 21, 2012
มุมมอง 86812 ปีที่แล้ว
The larger bird practises quite a lot and is now flying up to the entrance to look out. The smaller bird is stretching wings andlegs and fluttering about a little but is still being sat upon by the larger chick. I wonder idf they're getting enough food as they seem to be pecking at the inside of the box in thsat corner where they spend a lot of time.
Bluetit fledglings flapping their wings - Day 19: 20 May, 2012
มุมมอง 78912 ปีที่แล้ว
The fledglings are both trying out their wings. The larger one seems to like sitting on the other one so that one doesn't get the chance to practise as much. They should fly tomorrow or the next day. Both parents feeding but neither of the parents has roosted in the nest overnight for the last 4 nights.
Bluetit fledglings - Day 18: May 19, 2012
มุมมอง 63512 ปีที่แล้ว
Early morning activity. Fledglings fairly active. Both with eyes open and exploring the nest a little. I would have expected them to be attempting to fly within the nestbox by now but, although they flutter their wings, neither of them have experienced lift-off yet.
Bluetit fledglings - Day 17: May 18, 2012

Fledglings practising spreading their wings and leg stretches in the nest. Both feeding well. The weather is wet so probably won't fly for a couple of days.
Bluetit fledglings - Day 16: May 17, 2012
มุมมอง 96212 ปีที่แล้ว
Both chicks trying out their wings; one still smaller than the other - still has tufts on its head feathers. Parents seem to be feeding them more or less equally.
Bluetit fledglings - eyes open on day 15: May 16, 2012
มุมมอง 1.6K12 ปีที่แล้ว
The three surviving fledglings now have their eyes open and are practising flappingt their wings. One of them appears to be doing leg and wing stretches as well. I think they'll fly on Friday morning.

The chicks seem lively and well-fed. One has tried out its wings today, although not actually in flight as yet. They are morew fully feathered now.

This is an outside view of the parent from the previous video trying to remove the dead chick. Unfortunately, the attempt failed.
Fourth chick dead and attempted removal - Day 13: May 14, 2012
มุมมอง 29K12 ปีที่แล้ว
The fourth chick has died and the parent bird is trying to remove it from the nestbox. Unfortunately, she can't get herself and the body out at the same time. She tries several times without success. The corpse is now lying near the entrance.
Bluetit chick's first walkabout in the nest
มุมมอง 1K12 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the chicks got out of the nest and started wandering around the nestbox. Neither of the parent birds quite knew what to do about it. Neither of them fed it until it gor back into the nest. Now it's very thrusting and gets more food than the other two.
Three surviving bluetit chicks - Day 13: May 14, 2012
มุมมอง 2.5K12 ปีที่แล้ว
One chick wasn't getting much food yesterday so there are only three left now. I think this must be a first-time mother as she often only feeds a couple of the chicks, then goes out again. The father seems to share the food arounda bit more. The chicks are now practising spreading their wings so may be ready to fly at the weekend. They have little tails now.

Much like in the real world, the squeaky wheel always gets the grease. If you don't ask, you won't get.
There were 11 eggs and 7 of them hatched. Unfortunately, all except 2 died. A couple were very small and couldn't get fed but I don't know why the others died as they were all a reasonable size.
Some genetic failure maybye. Numerous unhatched eggs could be the sign.
Thanks for that information - I shall certainly remember that.
Just a reminder , if anyone leaves out live mealworms for birds , cut off the mealworms heads first as they can cause death by burrowing through the chicks internal organs before the chick has time to digest them. This is only one of many reasons they die.
loalbear111 ....what will they do to live ??? Eat...poop and sleep.
Unfortunately, the best box is high up inn the side of the house so it's not just a matter of popping the lids open for a few seconds -you's have to get up a ladder, hold open the roof, take out the inner roof separating the camera wires from the box, feed them and put our all back before either parent returned. It is impossible.
I'm glad to see them.I was worried about the one that lounges forward and them not pooping well.I think if ever a nest needed rescued, this one did.I think they must be new parents because of the 4 dud eggs n 5 deaths.2 bad u couldn't have fed them in between the parents dropping in.I went back and re-watched the video's.And saw the mommy kept looking at the hole. Also in one of them the male came in with food and she begged4 food.so she's probably young.I don't know what else it would be.
That was so cute how she fed that tiny baby.
I meant to say cold not child!
Thanks for the idea- unfortunately, the parents would be frightened off if I did that and would probably abandon the best altogether. I think they will fly in the next three or four days and, as the weather is fairly child, I think it will be ok
No they won’t. Birds rarely if ever abandon their babies when hatched.
I wonder if you could open the top so she could get it out easier.Else it's going to stink and draw blow flies.
Thanks, Bob. Unfortunately, once you watch at full screen, the image becomes blurry but, hopefully, people can more or less work out where the cursor is going and what it's doing.
well done Gwynneth, very helpful, needed spy glass to read in some areas, bob moseley
