Racial justice & emergency responses webinar
8:30am Monday 18 March
Kaikōrero:
Sir Collin Tukuitonga, Kevin Hague, Dr Amohia Boulton
Ringa hāpai:
Lisa McNab
State-led responses to emergencies, disasters and/or public health emergencies (whether they are naturally-triggered or human-induced) have often failed to serve Indigenous and racialised communities. In Aotearoa, during the 1918 influenza pandemic, we lost seven times more Māori than non-Māori lives due to racism within the state-led response. Inaction or inadequate action in the domain of emergency responses cost lives in the case of COVID-19 and breached te Tiriti o Waitangi (see Haumaru Waitangi Tribunal report).
Through COVID-19, the Kaikoura earthquakes and Cyclone Gabrielle, we have seen robust Māori-led responses. Pacific and other Indigenous and racialised communities are also stepping into the void. This leadership has been successful when state-led responses have been slow and insufficient. In the context of an increasing climate emergency, the panel discuss how can racial justice has been embedded into emergency responses so no-one gets left behind.
This webinar was part of the Te Tiriti-based Futures + Anti-racism open access, online conference, 16-25 March 2024. #TBF2024 www.tiritibasedfutures.info

    After 60+ years in workforce I have NEVERT seen "racial" abuse .I do not doubt it happens but any distinction s I saw were based around unreliability/alcohol issues, & that applied to "whites" also . Steady responsible folks I knew were singled out regardless of race. I believe if you choose to be a VICTIM its easy to achieve... & fidel castro & castro sure are NOT a good role model! Also Choosing to debate in TWO languages is very difficult. Also what specifically is "colonialism" drag it out let me understand what you mean. History shows what a terrible mess NZ was in 1840 the situation was aweful. of a population of 120--100,000 40 to 60 000 were the only survivors! ...actually @500x Worse than the german nation (german nation only)did in ww2. The treaty stopped the tribal wars, stopped slavery, started better agriculture, housing etc BUT health was AWEFUL & the terrible tribal disruptions decimated society.

      Are you sure you are living in Aotearoa. If you haven't recognised "RACISM" in Aotearoa in the past 60 + plus years, you must be a 'Pakeha' and a 'blind Pakeha' also. 'Racism' has existed in Aotearoa is the Pakeha first landed in Aotearoa. Don't be so arrogant and ignorant. If you are a 'Pakeha' do some investigative research before making uninformed, non-factual comments.

    Helen Clark described Annette Sykes as a Hater and a Wrecker. most would agree. Maybe the crime rate with maori is the inability to shake off a tribal past. Colonisation actually decreased acts of violence and bought to society the rule of Law which Sykes conveniently exploit to racially devide. Just another militant career uni activist -irrelevant plastic maori. Spent the whole time wiping hupe from her nose -all class.

    After a huge monologue, Veronica somewhat 'blows it' when she mentions (and gesticulates) the "four articles of the treaty." Might be good if she studies it before actually attempting to teach it.

    • @maori_brotha
      @maori_brotha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "fourth" article is Catholic Bishop Pompallier's article. Based in Paihia, he encouraged Maori to remind the Anglicans that all religions and belief must be protected - including the Cathiolic and Wesley faiths. And this also included indigenous beliefs. There are hapu that did sign the Treaty based on this advice.

    it sometimes feels daunting to constantly have to stand up for the rights of Indigenous peoples to be in a world free of racism!..of course we wouldn't have too if greed & power were extinct from this world!..and those who worship it did not want to ride our backs to achieve supremacy. Thats great whaea, im genuinely happy to hear that one of our own not had problems. unfortunately whaea there's many like myself who have seen and been part of the ostracised by non Maori Peers, we have been witnesses and experienced the pain of racism being perpetuated on ourselves and our people in the mainstream health system, there are however many of us Maori nurses who have seen and lived these experiences for a long time, we've spoken up many times against it and on behalf of our people, we only have to listen to our peoples stories to know there is a big problem out here and it's only getting worse, im a Maori nurse and im one of many who have seen problems with racism in the system ive had many years as Maori nurse in a mainstream system but also within our own iwi health providers, and seen it perpetuated by our own on to our own where a pakeha nurse is paid more than the Maori nurses who have much more years of clinical experience. Please research more so you can see what we see and experience your niece is a smlal percentage if Maori Nurses who may not have problems but that doesnt mean the problems dont exist

      Its not about your niece, its about nurses in general with a special focus upon Nurses of Maori descendency and heritage. It might be a good idea for you to encourage your niece to support those Maori nurses that need the support an encouragement, rather than focusing upon yourself, 'I am alright', forget about the rest.

    Firstly I'd like to say thanks for the video and my heart goes out to you about your ex partner and then your boy. I have great mamae for you and your whanau thank you for sharing that. Arohamai I am Maori/Pakeha. I am trying to study for the health and wellbeing certificate level 4. I volunteer for a Pakeha organisation and there is another staff member who is doing the same course who gets paid and believes that cultural identity is bullshit and why should people even give a shit. He said this in front of the manager who is our verifier and I said to her that comment was really nasty and hurtful, she told me not to take things personally and he's allowed his opinion. This is just one incident. We got our first assignments back I past mine in high standards and he had to redo his. The more I learn about inequality for Maori, the more I see it around me and the more I understand why things didn't happen for me in the health system, why half my dads family have died from curable diseases and why mums family are still living long and healthy lives. This is extremely isolating and I've had thoughts of suicide because I can't fight it and I'm doing really well on my course. I will be calling the local Maori health organisation and hopefully they can help me and take me on.
