2017 08 21 Eclipse Traffic Jams Time Lapse
Back during the 2017 total eclipse in the United States, I captured a time lapse of the traffic wave leaving the area of totality on the Google Maps overlay from Xavier M. Jubier's web site. I turned on the traffic overlay and captured screen shots every minute until evening. I just finally stitched the screens together into an interesting time lapse.
It's an interesting view, you can still see the "red wave" of traffic well into the evening hours. In hindsight, I wish I had let the capture go for longer!
Anyway, with the great 2024 US Eclipse, I figured it would be a neat thing to post, and I will hope to try to produce a similar video tomorrow! Feel free to join me in capturing the eclipse traffic!
The map overlay used in this video can be found at:
xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2017_GoogleMapFull.html
The map for tomorrow's eclipse is at:
xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2024_GoogleMapFull.html
Sorry for no audio - I am trying to get the video posted in time before the 2024 eclipse event!
Happy Retro Gaming!

Commodore C64 1541 Ultimate II Plus Ethernet Demo
มุมมอง 18K7 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a demonstration of the 1541 Ultimate II Plus Ethernet. What I demo here is remote controlling the Ultimate, playing SID files, cart images, mounting and loading disk images, and transferring files via FTP. I also cover setting up the telnet client PuTTY, and also do my bad impersonations of C64 SID tunes! Not covered in this video would be accessing the Internet from the c64, as that fu...
Atari XEGS cartridge port repair
มุมมอง 6837 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a repair of an Atari XEGS console with a touchy cartridge port. To get games to work, you would have to re-seat the cartridge multiple times, and the games also had a problem with locking up when barely touching the cartridge or bumping the console. I go cover testing, cleaning, and inspecting the cartridge port, and also reflowing the solder joints on the port. Although this is a very ...

    Interesting. I agree that traffic was tamer than anticipated. I traveled to a small town in the path of totality and traffic was the same as always. Nobody else noticed a difference. Mainly, it was the interstates that got gridlocked.

    @seansretroverse9082 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Interestingly, the 2024 eclipse traffic has seemed rather tame compared to 2017 so far. Now that totality has moved off toward New Brunswick, only small pockets of traffic are appearing. Not sure if Google is just not tracking traffic as accurately nowadays, or if people really are just waiting a bit for traffic to clear before heading back home. It may also have something to do with more highways, as the 2024 eclipse is over more major cities with reasonable traffic infrastructure. By contrast, the 2017 eclipse was over the Appalachian mountains with fewer highway options to get in and out, which caused significant bottlenecks.

    Can it pretend to be a CMD hard drive? Is it C128 & or CP/M modes friendly? Will it run a WiFi usb stick for networking? Can it hold a Turbo rom? JiffyDos etc.

    • @seansretroverse9082
      @seansretroverse9082 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of questions! I believe the answer to most of these is currently no*: CMD hard drive: I don't think so c128 or CP/M friendly: not really per se. It can be used without being plugged into the cartridge port as a stand alone 1541 drive, but I think you will not get the 1571 double sided drive support, so yea, it's pretty limited as a C128 device. I believe if you put it in the cartridge port on a 128, it will boot into 64 mode. wifi stick: I know this was not originally supported, but I know some people were I think working on support for it. I do not know the current status for wifi support. Turbo/JiffyDOS: maybe. I know soft kernal replacements can be done via cartridges, but I have not personally tried this. would suggest researching Gideon's site and forums for the true answers to most of these questions. My take is this is really intended primarily as a virtual 1541 disk drive, tape drive, cartridge, and REU. I otherwise do not have a quick answer for you on this one, as I currently have my c64 in storage. Sorry I can't be of more use on this question - these are all great questions.

    Do the freeze functions allow you to save your place in a game?

    • @seansretroverse9082
      @seansretroverse9082 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a fair question. The short answer is no (I think?) As I recall, I do not think it has any type of instant save state like you have in an emulator (I could be wrong). That being said, it does support freezer cartridges such as super snapshot. While you could use this for saving a state during gameplay, you still have to dump it to disk and reload it from disk. This was mostly used for beaking copy protection, i.e. freeze right when the game finished loading and save that to disk. Where I could be wrong here is I think it is likely to technically be somewhat possible, as the Ultimate II Plus supports a lot of RAM expansion options, so I think utilities could be written to swap the main system memory in and out. Where the problems occur is some of the hardware like the SID and maybe the VIC-II cannot be save stated perfectly, so it would probably be glitchy.

    I'd guess one port is a JTAG (used to do the original firmware installation at fabrication and for debugging) and the unsoldered port is UART (serial)

    Thanks for the intro to the UltimateII. Hopefully you got the firmware updated OK in the end. Its too bad you are not generating new C64 content , right now there is a bit of a resurgence in the C64 and Amiga for nostalgia buffs and the younger crowd who were never in the original scene. It's funny about action biker, as soon as it started up I was humming along with the tune despite not even touching the game for over 30 years now. I was all over that one in the 80's, playing it on my dual drive rig. Hope you are doing OK, cheers, - Eddy

    Maybe the slot leaf contacts are bent out of shape and just need a little nudge with a dental pick to apply more pressure to the cartridge? But perhaps replacing the slot or the contacts would be the best option.

    I'm encouraged to see so many C64 fans in the USA. In Australia, we only had British Commodore magazines back in the day and all of the US magazines were IBM & Apple so I assumed it wasn't a thing over there. Looking at the 1541UII+ web site, most of the visitors are from Germany and the USA though.

    I just got my UII+ today, question the microSD for external power, is that to provide power or receive power?

    • @seansretroverse9082
      @seansretroverse9082 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is an excellent question! It is so the Ultimate II+ can receive supplemental power. Why would you need this? Simple, it is so you can run it as a stand alone drive without using up the cartridge port on your 64. If you control it over Ethernet, it can work without being plugged into the cartridge port. This also means you can actually use the II+ with other Commodore computers, like the VIC-20, for instance. The main thing to remember is to use the UII+ this way, is you must control it via Ethernet.
