Glad to hear it! Slightly off topic in regard to building a log cabin. But it’s really beautiful. Haven’t had access to the cabin due to the snow. But in a couple of weeks it’ll be gone. So more log cabin content is coming soon 😊 All is well. Hope you are doing well as well!

Thanks for appreciating my video, and thanks for your feedback. I’ll keep more informative commentary in mind. In this case I hunted on government owned land. You can hunt there by paying a fee and may hunt a big variety of game. In addition there’s different bag limits depending on the species. In other cases people often hunt on private owned land that they either lease or own themselves.

@@simon__aslund Yes I think you have similar weather as we do this time of year. Mid to upper 40’s at night and mid 60’s during the day, do you? Nice for outside work for sure. I return to work for the winter soon and I am looking forward to it. We are having a great fall now!

Had to a Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion on that one 😅 but that seems to the same as here. “Good weather for soldiers” as some use to say. Very good for physical work outside. Sounds nice! Is it the work at the ski resort?

At that particular time I was hunting capercaillie. When there’s that much snow on the ground they sit in the tree tops.

Don’t know if it’s a hunting method only used in Sweden or if it’s used in other countries as well. But it’s fun and challenging. Often shooting distances is 150m+, and they’re small targets. Also since they have excellent hearing and sight it’s hard to get close enough.

You got a point there 😅 maybe it doesn’t show in this short, but this is way out, far from the nearest road. So I use a cabin as “base camp”.

It has done right by itself. Really good quality on that saw 😁

Maybe wasn’t the saw who’s been mixed up with ‘em buds 😅 jokes aside. The setup wasn’t very stable, so the saw had a hick up

The brand is called “Inca”. Don’t know how old it is, but it’s quite old. Probably from the 60s or 70s. But it runs really good 👍

Exactly. It’s a minor bump in the road so to speak 😅 Glad you like it. Further along you’ll see the upside of this method. This procedure just requires logs and moss to have a fully wind proof and isolated house for living in. Spoiler alert. I have video material for one more video, but I’m actually about to move the entire build very soon. I’ve found a perfect spot for the cabin and have had a little help recently from father to clear the spot. So I’ll move it there and continue after that. I’ll hope to make a video when I move it. At first I didn’t have a spot for it, but I started building anyway cause I wanted to learn. This kind of buildings is quite easy to take apart and put back together in a different location. But since I now have a spot, it’ll be funnier to build the rest there. Wow, turned out to be a long reply! 😅

Thanks Larry! Your kind comments always brings me joy. I might give axe throwing a try when I’m done. Thankfully, here up in the mountains it most of the time stays quite cool. Is that not the case in Maine? Yeah, that bow was a bit challenging. I’m trying to choose logs that fit together, but since all logs is trees that the wind knocked down in a storm I didn’t get to choose. So it’s a matter to work with what I got. But it’s a fun challenge making everything come together. 😄

@@simon__aslund it’s been hot here. High humidity 80’s and 90’s. Not usually this hot here this long. We have had rain here but when we do we get flooding. Crazy weather. Yes I can see that you have to work the logs to make them fit but like you said you make due with what you have. Your doing a great job and it is interesting to see what you have to do to make them fit. Looks great! 👍👍

Thanks! Indeed it does. But eventually I’ll hopefully get better at it. It’s hard work for sure. In the US I’ve seen that you often time use a different method and apply “shinking” in between the logs instead of making a tight “draw” as I make in the end of this video. Have you come across that? If you haven’t made a log cabin, what did you do when you worked as a carpenter? Dimensional lumber, timber framing?

@@simon__aslund Yes house construction and a friend of mine worked at his family’s boat yard on the ocean so I worked with him on weekends doing wood boat repair. His father was getting older and wanted to sell the business. So my friend and I bought it and ran a boat repair business full time for 30 years. We were one of the few places that still did wood repair. We hired some people and did fiberglass repair as well and eventually did everything from bow to stern. I really enjoyed it. My father was a carpenter all his life so I started that at an early age. I am 69 now took he Facility Maintenance job at the ski resort to keep busy in the winter. Rest of the year I am retired! 😃🤣😂 I have watched other log cabin builds and seen chinking . Some mortar based and some in a caulking tube I also have seen foam put between the logs.

Wow that’s really cool! Working on boats. I don’t know one bit about boats, but I like them. Sounds like a really rewarding career. Also boats and ski resorts sounds like a big contrast. Chinking, that’s right. I spelled it wrong. Seems to be a fun thing to try sometime. I’ve also seen foam and mineral wool. But the really experienced log cabin builders here Sweden says that will make the logs rot due to those materials inability to “breathe”. Here Scandinavia we typically use moss when we isolate between the logs using traditional methods. Works great! Even sheep wool. Also works great.

Thanks a lot! 🙏 yes, I don’t have the specific year, but around 150 years old. Our main building at the farm is almost 170 years. The logs here are 5” roughly. How great that you noticed that detail! Actually, that was the problem from the very beginning. The wall had caved a bit making that log exposed to water that got its way down the cracks in the wood. I enjoy it very much! It’s a very good break from the office, for sure! 😊👍 Thanks again! Glad you enjoyed the video.

In this case I’m using pine. In Sweden we have typically only two types of trees with needles (do you call it that?). Pine and spruce. In the US there’s a larger variation, isn’t that right?

Thanks for your input and tips 🙌😄 The knot is quite complex. It’s a Swedish “Dalcarlian knot”. Though it’s time consuming it’s very tight, which is great for insulation. It’s one of the first ones I do, so it might come across even more time consuming than it actually is 😅

You almost sound like a Swede. Can’t make a Swede happy about the weather either 😄 That’s right. There’s a snowmobile trail running just outside my farm. A lot of people come to this area for that reason. Is it the same in Maine?

Sorry to hear that you don’t like it. It feels good with a short bar. Can imagine that a long bar both feels heavy and unstable. Draw knifes is really good tools! Have you tried those debarkers with discs that Dewalt and makita makes?

@@simon__aslund yeah since I'm about done with my cabin I tried just about everything commercially available The biggest problem I had with the log wizard is controlling the depth If I had some sort of a depth gauge or something like that it would help a lot and of course like I said a shorter bar The rotary rasp thing was way too slow In the end the old-timers seem to know what they were doing and the draw knife worked fine

I’m learning, and this is my first build, so it takes a lot of time 😅 I read that a experienced builder completes one “lap” per day. It takes roughly 10 logs in height for the walls.

@@simon__aslund I always did a little carving when I restored signs or I made stools for my sisters children years ago, things like that. I had two boys when I got married and with kids, remodeling my house I had no time. So when I retired about 5 years ago I wanted to really get into it so I did. Chip carving, lighthouses, gnomes etc…. So I do find it relaxing to take out a knife and carve anything. I am not perfect but people know what it is. 😃🤣😂

I’m working on getting better and to be more accurate with the axe. Sure, there’s an esthetic aspect to it. It looks nice, and back in the day when you splinted the log only with an axe, this finish came naturally. But however, there’s some practical use as well. When this is done, the log is up side down contrary to its final position. When the cuts is done it creates a surface which is more repellent to water than if you only have the sawn surface. Did that make sense? It’s kind of hard to answer such detailed questions in English. But I’m glad to answer them. 😃🙌
