Lost Arts of Nature
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 ธ.ค. 2011
Join us on our journey to live a life more deeply connected to nature and wildlife, maintaining an ancient woodland, and living lightly on the earth.
We are a family of three: Cem, Marie and 9-year-old Emmie. In the summer of 2019, we sold up our 2-bed, end-of-terrace house in North London and bought an old stone cottage (which needs substantial renovation) on 3.5 acres of ancient woodland, on the banks of the River Taf, in Wales. This meant that we could live mortgage-free, spending more time together as a family and learning to live off the land as much as possible.
We're spending our days renovating the old cottage using low-impact methods wherever we can, home educating Emmie, growing and foraging for food, processing our own firewood, renovating the old vegetable garden and maintaining the ancient woodland.

Storm damage and power down in West Wales
Hello everyone! Apologies for the recent silence from me - as a family we have been waylaid first by illness, and then some pretty bad storm damage. West Wales was hit by a powerful storm which caused unprecedented damage and a 5-day power outage for us. During that time, I didn't have access to electric to charge any devices nor to the internet to publish anything, so unfortunately my little corner of the internet ground to a halt. I am picking the pieces back up now and working on more content for you. I really appreciate your patience at this time! All the best for now, see you all soon with some more 'usual' content!

DROP SPINNING tutorial. Learn how to use a DROP SPINDLE to spin your own yarn!
มุมมอง 6K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello! In this video, I sit in the Autumn sunshine in the woods to show you how to spin yarn on a drop spindle. I have put together these kits from drop spindles made by my husband from wood from our own forest here in West Wales. There are different wool options to choose from, including some of my very own hand-dyed wools, and some natural colours from my friend's Shetland sheep. The wool is ...

มุมมอง 914 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello! Just popping in to say hi and have a little chat while sitting by the campfire (mordanting fibre for later Botanical Dyeing). I wanted to let you know that Part 2 of the sari silk bunting won't be long hopefully. I had a little back injury which knocked my filming schedule off balance, and so it's taken me longer than I anticipated. Also to let you know that my Patreon channel is in full...

Wet felting with the landscape-dyed wool
มุมมอง 1.2K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hello everyone, I spent a lovely time on Saturday doing some wet-felting and I decided to turn the camera on and show you my process. Like I say in the video, this isn't a tutorial (that will be coming soon!) but I just thought you may be interested to see a little more of my method of wet-felting. This felt will be dried soon, and when it is, I will cut it up into bookmark-sized pieces. I then...

Hand dyeing wool with Landscape Dyes
มุมมอง 4768 หลายเดือนก่อน
Emmie and I spent a lovely day over the weekend dyeing some wool roving, wool felt sheets and wool blanket with some Landscape Dyes. We spent the whole afternoon tending the fire, mixing up the dyes and adding wool to the pots - so much fun! We're both really pleased with the results, and we both really enjoyed the process. So you can't ask for more than that really! What a lovely way to spend ...

Saturday chat and update
มุมมอง 58ปีที่แล้ว
Hello TH-cam, I recorded this little chat yesterday in the polytunnel. There is an exciting project brewing, which I will reveal more about over the next couple of weeks. But it involves wool and filming tutorials, so there's a little clue for you! Mysterious! Hope you enjoy this little catch up, I'm really enjoying getting back into filming little videos for you all. Much love, Marie x

Express veg garden tour!
มุมมอง 322 ปีที่แล้ว
Apologies for the sound quality, I didn't realise how much my phone microphone picks up the noise of the wind! Here's an express tour of the vegetable garden (in progress) and a little bit of the top woods. Hope you enjoy this little update. I am hoping to get a new phone sorted soon, and so be able to offer better quality videos. But for now, here is what we have been up to...
Hello! It's been a long time.
มุมมอง 403 ปีที่แล้ว
Hello everyone, it has been almost a year since I last uploaded a video. On Sunday morning, I felt called to pick up my phone, head into the woods and record a 10-minute update on what's been going on here over the last year. It's just a short one, with not great picture quality (apologies!) but it was nice to show up and chat for a little while. I hope to be back again soon with some more upda...
Baby chicks hatching and handmade wooden coat hooks
มุมมอง 563 ปีที่แล้ว
This week has been one of the most exciting since we've been here - our chicks hatched! Amazingly, all 17 eggs hatched and now we have 17 baby chicks in the corner of our living room. We think the majority of them are Barred Plymouth Rock, but there are a couple of Bluebell crosses in there too. We will be updating the web shop this weekend with 10 wooden coat hooks, handmade by Cem at our kitc...

My mom has this book! I will have to see if it's in the boxes she gave me (I try to keep them safely packaged away)
Would love to see your bookmarks too. Very nice demonstration.
❤
Just about to try spinning, at age 72. My grandmother used to spin. I loved watching her. It was not often as she was Welsh and lived in Carmarthen, we lived in County Durham, Sunderland. I have obviously been looking online. This is the first time I have been able to see clearly, the twist travel. Thank you. I will be watching more of your videos
This is amazing, I am very jealous! ❤ 🌲
New subscriber, your passion seem to be the same as mine. I wonder if in a world of technology, do you feel the world is going too fast for you as I feel do you feel your work is important as I do. Thank you for your calm, voice and your passions that we share
Love how you explain and showed everything so clearly. Now I feel empowered to do it properly 😊
Hi Marie thank you for your video xx I am so very sorry on your such sad loss of your sister I know she passed away few years ago but I just wanted to say that sending lots of love always xx❤❤ it’s so hard life sometimes xx ❤❤❤
Hola Marie! After spinning my merino wool, the yarn that I create results very dry and completely loose its softness. Why is that? Should I wash the yarn again before using it for my crochet projects? Thank you for sharing your art.
Hi Amber thank you for sharing your beautiful Hone Sweet Home xxxx love it ❤❤❤❤❤xxx
🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤ thank you!
Thank you!
Oooh .. you just popped up on my TH-cam feed. Swansea girl originally, now London and the glorious Gower Peninsula. Aberystwyth University. Will watch your other videos and see if i can work out your location!
So sorry about the bad weather. At least some of the downed trees can be used for fire wood. No worries about the plying of the yarn video. I have been crocheting to keep me busy and just finished my very first cardigan and I'm so happy. Now trying to work on booties for my grandson. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and stay warm. 🥰🎄
So glad all are safe from the storms and recovering from illness. A little break from the sometimes intrusive social media is good but preferably on your terms not forced on you. I’ve been busy practising with my drop spindle I purchased from you. I’m using some scrap wool fibres before I use the lovely hand dyed fibre in the kit. It has been perfect weather to stay indoor and craft. Stay looking forward to the plying video when it comes. 👍
💛🙏🏼
I’m so excited that I found you! I’m looking forward to your future content!
I love the fairies!!! 💖
Hi Mari, Thank you so much for this video!!! I've learned so much, and so many more things from you. There is a lot that others have left out, because it's easy to leave out the smallest of things when you are so used to doing it yourselve. I learn more each time I watch it! I love it!!! ❤❤❤ Thank you so much! Janet
Yes, John Seymour books are great! There are so many similar books out there, but I have really enjoyed the Foxfire series of books. I think they’re from the 1970’s, but full of so much how to projects. Thank you for this video! Oh, I love that scarf you have on. Could you share the pattern or tell me a little about how to make it. I would greatly appreciate it!!!
I love his books as well and as you said his drawings are wonderful
Beautiful!!
Yes, I will look for a tutorial. Thank you
Thank you so much for making this video. I have watched many TH-cam tutorials for spindle spinning and still haven’t had the confidence to pick up my spindle. Your video was very easy to follow, close up with no long winded technical knitting jargon that just confuses me. I feel like starting my spinning journey now after two years. Thank you so much for making this craft look doable. Love your channel.
Very good demonstration, I’m just starting I mean I just ordered my Spindle and yarn. I’m excited to get started thanks 🙏🏻
Thank you for your lovely comment! Enjoy spinning with your new drop spindle!
John Seymore books are full of inspiration❤
They really are!
Thank you very much for this informative video! So pleasant. I would be interested in carding- does one need a drum carder? Can you mix fiber types? So happy to have found your channel via a comment by your mom on @thelasthomelyhouse- she is a great cheerleader for you. Off to view more of your talent.
What a wonderful channel! This is fascinating. Love anything done by hand. Can't wait to watch more. Thank you ❤
Thank you for your lovely comment! Great to have you here following along
I'd never heard of this before, I'm interested to give it a go someday! I'd really love to eventually see my way to a wool producing animal (I need my own house and land first though, lol), and I think this drop spinning looks pretty accessible for a small scale hobbyist spinner c:
I think it’s wonderful, and I subscribed to you, so I can learn more. Please check out my channel, where I do woodworking, sculpture, painting and other things. 🎉🎉🎉
Simply delightful, you are a very good teacher. Please come visit me at my channel, where I do woodcarving and painting and fun skits!
Thank you so much for a carefully paced and informative video. I’m a self taught weaver and have been keen to try spinning with a drop spindle and you have inspired me to give it a go. Thank you.
That makes me so happy! Enjoy your spinning adventure!
Just found you and subscribed ❣️. I have bags and bags of Alpaca waiting to be processed, with your help I have a chance to get some done. Maybe starting with a drop spindle will give me the confidence to use one of the spinning wheels that I've collected ❣️. Thank you ❣️
Oh yes, that sounds great. I have never spun Alpaca, but I'm told it's lovely to spin with. I have a bag here waiting for me to try it. It's going to be a nice winter project. Let me know how it goes with you!
This was lovely to watch. I am sure that there have been many changes since this video was made. Thank you so much.
So many changes! I have been thinking to film an update someday soon...
If I'm making a pie, chutney or crumble but don't have time or space to make cider vinegar, I put the cores and peelings in the freeze and use them later.
@@hastenbeck1 great tip!
Lovely, looking forward to learning more about the lost arts of nature. Looks a great book, can see why you were fascinated by it when a child.
Great to have you here! It is really is such a lovely book!
Thank you, you are an excellent tutor and have found drop spinning really interesting.
Thank you!

Lovely to meet you Maree, I look forward to watching your videos, thanks so very much for sharing.💚💚
@@mariakirchner6437 good to meet you too! Thank you for being here! ✨️
Hi Marie. I'm also a smallholder on 14 acres in Nth Cumbria. Started from just rank pasture, it's now woodland and orchard and I'm about to coppice my second 'cant' of sweet chestnut for building and firewood.....exhausting and heavy work, so I have to make sure my woodstove's banked up for regular breaks. I do wattle&daub as you'll find in your book, as I've clay, sand, hay and hazel in abundance. The old skills need revival urgently as there's big changes on the way. Keep making videos 🙏
@spindelnett6315 so lovely to read your comment, and I absolutely agree. It's so important to keep these skills going. Sounds like you have a wonderful place! I'd love to do some wattle and daub one day. And yes woodstoves! We find it is a constant job to keep the firewood flowing! My husband recently did a coppicing and green woodworking course locally with Coppicewood College. He learnt so much which we now apply to our own little patch of forest. It's such an honour to be a guardian of woodland. So glad you're here ✨️
Such a lovely video - thank you so much. Have subscribed and looking forward to all that you share. Best wishes.
Lovely to have you here - thank you for subscribing!
So glad your channel popped up! I subscribed.
Thank you! Glad to have you here! ✨️
What beautiful introduction to such a beautiful soul! I shall follow you into the woods to enthusiastically and gratefully learn what you so graciously share. Thank you for being!
Thank you for your beautiful comment. Looking forward to connecting further with future videos! ✨️
Marie, will you have more kits in your shop for the holidays? thanks!
Hello there! Yes absolutely. I am hoping to get more listed this week. I am waiting for a day when it is not raining so that I can photograph them in the woods, but so far it has been non-stop rain! Hopefully soon! 🤞
@lostartsofnature6113 thank you so much! Stay dry!!
I'm so excited! I was able to purchase a bundle this evening! I love your channel and am so happy I found you ❤️
Glad i found you 😊 ...the algorithm works sometimes ...i look forward to your videos ...
Good to have you here! 😊
I@m looking forward to future content.
Glad you are here! ✨️
Hi Marie! From one fiber artist to another it's so nice to find your channel :) I'm a spinner too but never was able to master the drop spindle, I just went to a wheel and found it to be easier to learn for me. I look forward to seeing what you create in the future.
Hello there! So interesting to hear about your experiences. The wheel and the spindle are two different creatures aren't they? Despite having so many similarities, they are quite different to use. I have enjoyed both, but I do love that drop spinning is so portable. So glad to have you here! ✨️
