My overall purpose of this channel is to help Dove hunters, and other wildlife enthusiasts, to prepare and provide a good food source. I’ve been planting dove fields since high school. Today it’s harder and harder to find places to hunt. If you take the time, and follow the needed steps, YOU can have a quality place to hunt year after year. Let’s not forget, to thank God for the opportunity to be good stewards to what he created for us to enjoy!
Foot plot management
Today I’m adding two types of rye seed to increase the types of forage available for the wildlife. In addition to forage, the rye will add organic content to the soil and with the crimson clover, hopefully start improving the overall productivity of this food plot.

Been busy doing the same thing brother
Hey brother Jefe. Have a nice meal. Happy to know you're also born again.
Praying for you, great vid!
Cool man! Thanks! On that inside burlap with out camo on it you can break that solid pattern up with some vertical spray paint in dark brown, black or dark green. I see you overlapped some, but likely not enough material for all. I love burlap for blind material. It works great. Oh, and the dove stools are freaking awesome!
Bro.... Vietnam...
Cover weeds are either Coffee senna or Sicklepod. Hard to control in ag fields. I sure hope you all have a great shoot. I just found out that our Georgia season doesn't open until 9/7. I just burned my Dove Proso Millet today. Millions of toasted seeds on the ground. I think Wednesday I'll mow my sunflowers down to spread the seed. Again, good luck on your shoot. You all will certainly have fun.
@@cervus-venator I hope you have a great opening weekend as well. Thanks for the comment!

Love your videos. Sorry for your bad luck with the storm. I am in same type area as you are down in coastal SC. One trick an old timer told me about is to pick up blown down heads and throw them in an a small mesh bottom utility trailer to get them off the ground to keep from rotting. They will dry out and you can then tow trailer down your prepped rows and seed will fall out while bouncing around. I asked local game warden about it and his opinion was told to keep legal trailer has to stay in the field. Maybe it could work for you? P.S. we call your cover weed Sicklepod. We fight it a lot!
Your sunflower fields are very clean of grass and weeds. Birds seem to like a clean field a little better. Beautiful farm too.
Great message at the end!
Great job , gonna be easy to retrieve downed birds in that field
I love that song 🎧
Thanks for the update! I didn't get that much rain, but the wind really broke some and laid some over. I walked it today and saw seeds on the ground under some heads as well as dove in there feeding. I have a lot of Dove Proso Millet that is ready. I mowed a 75 yard strip about 12 feet wide and there is seed everywhere on the ground and on top of the mower. I'm sure hoping we have the birds come opening day.
What do you use for pre emergent on your sunflower fields?
Thanks for the update. It's neat to see the ones that survived.
Do you grow a cover crop over the winter? It would certainly help with your organic matter and CEC
@@forrestjones3804 planned on trying some this fall. After all the water dries up!
@@ElJefePsioda oats and cereal rye with crimson clover has always been good to us, the clover fixes that available nitrogen and the rye lays down a really pretty layer of slow release fert for the summer crop. And a field of crimson red blooms in April sure is a sight to see
I'm in central Florida. Luckily it didn't get worse than a 1 and passed us by. We just got heavy rain and some wind. It's still raining as we're getting the back end of the bands. Will probably be like this all day. The further over land it goes the weaker it will get so you'll probably get rain and winds. What I like is afterwards you get to see birds that only stay out at sea inland. Like frigate birds.
So beautiful and peaceful out there. Nice to see so many birds.
Hopefully Betty will not push the doves out of the area.
Thanks for the update. Yeah the birds are weighing the power lines down for sure. Take care and hopefully Debby will pass you by. I'm hoping for the same.
You can't beat spring standing rye grain for small game. I'm in Central nc myself.
What kind of sunflowers are they?
@@TwoPilotMind These are mostly Black Oil sunflowers, but I believe some other varieties get mixed in as well. Some people may call them Peredovik sunflowers.
I like them in this stage too. If you don't keep any for yourself how do you plant for next year? I love birds too. My sunflowers are also spent. I'll probaby start another batch but on a small scale for my yard.
@@ScaryFear I’ve tried using seed from previous years but germination was all over the place. Therefore, I purchase new certified seed every spring.
@@ElJefePsioda Ah ok. Good to know.
Do you have any clover growing around the fruit trees and feeder? And try out a blend this fall of a cereal grain, legume, and a brassica! The power of nature feeding itself with all those plants helping each other is really cool!
@@forrestjones3804 I have used crimson clover in the past and it returns somewhat every year. I absolutely believe in using things that fix nitrogen in the soil for other plants to benefit from.
@@forrestjones3804 I lay a pretty concentrated salt layer around the feeder to keep grass down and supplement minerals for the wildlife. I can try to establish clover around the trees but it probably doesn’t better when there a bit larger and can provide some shade. That area is in direct sunlight most of the day!
@@ElJefePsioda we have been using Medium red clover the last couple years and even in the drought and heat into the 90’s we have it growing late into June. The deer and turkeys are wearing it out, the protein levels in it help with egg and milk production for the females, and antler production for the bucks. It has earned a spot in my mix in most every plot!
I love the one you showed and there was another short one with a big head. Cool how clean the rows are for sure. I'm very happy because today my tallest one opened up and it has dark red petals and a small head. Looks funny way up there. It was seed I kept from last year from a red one that got crossed with an American Giants.
This is beautiful!
Nice little update. So beautiful. I love the the ones that are tall and multiheaded ones. I planted a small packet of unknowns last year and got a dark red one. So happy to hear you're a born again believer in Christ. My house is also. My husband and I were saved when we were children. Definitely count our blessings one by one.
What a lovely field of sunflowers. I'll be happy to watch your garden's progress. I'm curious how many seeds you'll get at the end of the season. I should try to plant something like this though I don't have a lot of seeds. I have a few sunflowers in my yard. Mine never get taller than 5 feet unfortunately. The tallest one I ever had was rare it was almost 6 feet. I'm in central Florida zone 9b.
Planting sunflowers has been a hobby of mine for many years years, but I don’t harvest them! I plant them for the wildlife.
Do you ever use an owl decoy in the mix?
Yes, when growing up an owl decoy was a regular tool in our arsenal. Normally carried a 10’ pole to put him on, his name was “Egor”.
Looking good! I bet them deer are licking their lips waitin for a shot at them things!
El Jefe! Nice crop of sunflowers! Definitely need some pointers!
