IS A MUSIC DEGREE WORTH IT? | Between Movements Podcast | Episode 15
I really like your video.
I guess this doesn't applied to every composer? And I though Chopin only applied rubato to the right hand, keeping the left hand with a stable rythm.
This is specifically for the Romantic era, and it doesn't apply to every composer I think. There are reports that this is how Chopin did rubato, but the reports are conflicting. Tonebase did a very good episode on rubato specifically with a lot of research.
💪
I love how he emphasizes bass note in the end of passage
What is the tuning ?
Should be equal temperament I believe, although Hans might mess with that I'm not totally sure
Awesome tutorial, thank you so much. I am beginner and the foot work on this is not quite clear to me. How are the pedals used in this piece?
Thank you for sharing this, Josh.
Thanks for watching!
please elaborate about the bottom of page 26.Horowitz, Janis, Pletnev, Gilels and Rodriguez play different chords than is written. beginning at 6:17
I believe that it was Horowitz who thought the extra measures of D major were excessive so he left them out and it became popular for other pianists to leave it out. Personally I don't think the extra measures are excessive, I like how they all have slight variety, and after so much heavy D minor, I think it's paced well before the transition to the next section.
@@joshvigranmusic I am talking about the left handed chords before that section. Hear Gilels/Cluytens , Santiago Rodriguez, Janis also play them. The left handed chords before fff beginning at cresc.
@@789armstrong Ah, then honestly I'm not sure sorry, perhaps there is another version I'm not aware of
@@joshvigranmusic it is heartbreaking you have not done your homework since those left handed chords are in Horowitz/Coates and must have been approved of by the cvomposer when they first met in 1928
@@789armstrong sorry to break your heart!
uhm so i just found your channel and i wanna first say it is amazing and has so much great information for music nerds like me. second i wanna ask from you to do a similar analysis series but for rach 2 which i love the most
I currently don't have any plans to do an analysis series on Rach 2, but if the reception for my Rach 3 arrangement is good once it's published then maybe I can get back to more of the project. Since I don't have the sponsorship from before it is a looooot of work and editing to do without getting paid for it. I have a very small channel right now so I actually don't make any money from youtube.
This piece of video is awesome!!!
Great to see this!
What's the rush??? You are not going to be a master of this until it's memorised and it takes more than a week to remember all the differences between the repetitions of the material. Then there's getting it up to the right tempo and putting some interpretation in...
Oh for sure, I've worked on it on and off for months and I finally feel ready to do a recording soon haha! It's just a challenge I did.
@@joshvigranmusic I don't deny your ability at quick note-learning of course! I am in the same position with this piece. Do post the end result!
His music lives on. My favourite composer.
This video was so touching, and very respectful to the memory of an eternal master. It inspires me to make the trip from NJ up to Valhalla myself one day :) Thank you!
I definitely recommend making the trip!
Medtner ended up becoming my fave for years now
The main piece in this opus is definitely number 3. The psychological value of this moment…
Fantastic!! Love the fingering discussion. It was YEARS before I finally accepted that the best fingering was not necessarily the one given in the particular edition. When closely studied it is not "hard" compared to the etude tableau, sonatas or concertos. LOTS of repetition in both hands but the secret is the marking. "Presto" is truly the real challenge.
Yes I totally agree! A lot of people claim this piece is easy, but very few I have seen play it up to speed and with all the proper expression.
This sounds beautiful
I think different pianos can offer different perspectives as they bring out different elements of sound.
Well that's sad to hear. This was best analysis of rachmaninoff's third piano concerto I've ever seen. I hope you can finish it someday and don't despair, even the master himself made a few bucks playing piano gigs. 🙂
It is unfortunate, but I've continued work on the transcription. Maybe one day I can get back to the videos, but I'm halfway through arranging the 3rd movement for single piano
@@joshvigranmusiccan't wait to hear it!
Again this is brilliant. I would like to get college credit for attending this class please. 🙂
Haha! 😅
Thank you. This is brilliant.
Thank You so much for making this tutorial, you're amazing peep!! :D
I have been looking for a tut on this version of the song for so long, thank you. This was an amazing tutorial, ive been playing piano for 9 months and i can now play this song, thank you.
an imperial B on stage! got quite the practice room!
Haha, it was a rare opportunity, only been able to play it about 5 times or so
I'm saying this for the first time in 2024 Sep, wondoring if you have a finished version now?
The first two movements are complete and the third is over halway done!
Excellent work!!
@josh.v.music: In the first section of bar 306 the last three notes (at the end of the first descending part) are written C#, D, A and they are written as this in Rachmaninoff's original score as well. But everyone seems to play them C#, E, A instead. And I do think E sounds better than D. Is there just a widespread agreement to change the score here or am I reading it wrong?
Sorry for the late reply, to be honest I never noticed! I think I just always heard it as an E, and it just registered to me as an E. Maybe it's a typo? E seems to make the most sense. I guess one of the best ways would be to check Rachmaninoff's own recording.
I'm musically illiterate even if I've always been just a casual but a life-long fan of classical music particularly the piano. This presentation gives me a better appreciation of the magnificence of Rachmaninoff and the genius of musicians like you who can play, dissect the work and make it so entertaining inspite of the immense complexity of it all. Its comaprable to us being in awe of astronauts doing a space walk and never having even dared to ride a rollercoaster... But I do love watching the ride from a vantage point. Keep on Raching 'cause you rock Mr. Josh V.
Very good workshop, thank you for this. Be able to play the notes correctly is already a great start but listening/watching the harmonies as much as you can from great pianists will bring you to the next level like Seong Jin Cho for example who plsys it very romantic and and with a lot of feeling.
great!
Singers cant resist vibrato. Instrumentalist tie themselves in knots to make their line clear and strait, but like the flashing light on an ambulance the vocalist feels the need to warble away.
It all depends on style and context I suppose. For instance string players use vibrato pretty ubiquitously in classical music but clarinetists do not, whereas in jazz clarinetists use vibrato. Some types of early music use no vibrato.
What upsets me is the beauty of his first moment musicaux and last are overshadowed by the fourth just because it SOUNDS difficult. Yes rhe fourth is absolutely beautiful, but the 6th is to die for. And the fourth isn’t too bad, just gotta have the endurance
I am new to piano I am a very beginner and I am very much desperate in learning this cornfield chase music can someone help me by giving the notes of the first part part with alphabet and number ( eg a4e4
What stereo angle are you using on the M5s?
Hello, comment ca va, still in Texas ?
Yes I am, but in 2 weeks we will be moving out of the state
Commenting for the algorithm. We miss you.
Hi! I'm so sorry life has been extremely busy. I have posted some new videos in collaboration with my friend's channel if you look up Rhapsody Piano Studio on youtube! But I promise I have more videos coming soon. I have some concerts in October and am moving out of state next month so I'll have some updates about those events as well.
10:49 I think R2 is still neo-romantic whereas R3 has more modern/American influences, i.e. both feet in the twentieth century or as i once learned in music school, dynamism - the vibrancy, technology, etc. of the new century. Re R3 international performance, i dont think you had Yunchan Lim's Cliburn performance in mind🤣
Haha, no it was not Lim!
Uhhh... what in the world does this have to do with the video? 🤣
Learning the later section with the waltz and all the hemiolas is driving me crazy.
op 16 no 4 is literally just a remix of winter wind lol.
Thanks a lots.
Hey, great vid! As i russian i ve never actually heard the melody of russian church thats sounds similar to the main theme. Can you give me recording on youtube or maybe give me russian name, because i cant find it myself.
Hi! Sorry for the late response. In one of the follow up videos I found out that was actually a rumor that wasn't exactly true, however there is a particular chant that is very similar. I found the article on JSTOR I think, or some academic journal but unfortunately since I graduated I have no access and have been unable to find it. But Rachmaninoff said that the theme "wrote itself". Any similarities to chant must have been subconscious in that case.
@@joshvigranmusic when waiting for your answer i actually found a recording on youtube of the particular tune you are refering to th-cam.com/video/zMvT-yR39_A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZVTQBxmhxHbIZk1r But i think there are multiple melodies in both church and party music of russia that have some similarities. I think that was actually the idea, and thats why melody "wrote itself". Its just immidiatly so familiar and feels like something you deeeefinitely heard before. I think that is the feeling Rachmaninoff wanted the listener to have.
@@joshvigranmusic but actually in the recording i send the C is natural, not C# as you play it in the video and show in the sheet music. Dont know why there is such difference
@@grisha0599 there was a different one in the article that was even more similar. I will continue trying to find it, I wish I had saved that article!
