Another great episode and insight into our Railway past. I can't wait for the next episode, having witnessed the demise of our railway network in the 1960's. My elder brother was a Fireman on Britannia Class locomotives out of Liverpool Street. My Saturdays were spent train spotting on Liverpool St. and Kings Cross stations. Never without the obligatory Ian Allan Engine Listing Book! Our local line between Gt. Yarmouth and Lowestoft is another example of our lost heritage. So many lines lost throughout Britain and so sadly missed.
Always good to see Prince Andrew and his love for kids.
Great presentation, very interesting and detailed. Just one criticism is the old film footage of the line shouldn't have been cropped into the widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, resulting in the picture having part of the top and bottom missing.
Thank you for your comments. Yes, it's a dilemma how to present 4:3 footage.
Mountain bike around here a lot , fascinating series.
Loving this series!
Thank you so much! We are delighted that you like it. Please subscribe to our channel.
I was brought up in Cranleigh .biggest village in England and no railway
Brilliantly produced, i am familiar with the downslink but in patricular from Henfield to Shoreham, having cycled it many times.wonderful for me to have the route explained, always had an interst in this line, also good to see dumpman mentioned in your production,by chance saw ep2 before ep1, look forward to ep3..
Thank you for watching the series, Steve (even if it was back to front!) Dumpman is a great man, we are delighted to be collaborating with him on this.
What an excellent series. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Thank you very much. Filming for episode 3 is well underway !
Fascinating stuff once again; love the effects which really bring out where the tracks fit onto the current landscape. Was good to see footage of a Hastings buffet unit on a railtour. This was probably one of two "Sunny South Express" tours organised by the Lea Valley Railway Club in 1976 (1 May or 31 July) with unit 1034 which visited a series of Sussex and Kent freight lines including Beeding
So glad you enjoyed it. We love when we get footage that we can show like that because it really brings it all to life.
My home town of Shoreham ❤
I hope you enjoy episode 1, which features Shoreham a lot!
@@stephencranford1102 really intriguing. It’s a shame shoreham does not have that route. I feel this generation would use that route. Shoreham is to built up now to have it again
Really enjoyable and hugely informative thanks Stephen and all for undertaking this project. My family recently cycled this route and i was very keen to see the extent of the quarry railway.
Thanks very much for your lovely feedback, and for watching too, of course!
Fantastic and professional series thank you. I've been cycling the Downs Link for years and have always been interested in the history. Loads of information in these two episodes that I'd never seen before. Looking forward to the rest of the episodes and hoping that you might do a second series on the Guildford to Horsham line.
Thank you for watching, and for your kind comments
Would love that line to have been kept living in Henfield between Horsham and Shoreham (and theyre right, it IS Shoreham-by-Sea).
Yes, I'm sure it would be well used if it existed today.
An amazing well produced programme most enjoyable, thank you so much .and yes I have subscribed 😊
Thank you very much.
I've really enjoyed watching this and I can't wait for the next episode.
Thank you!
Excellent production Stephen. Well done to everyone who contributed. Thank you all for the time and effort that you have put into making this. I'm looking forward to watching Episode 2 ....
Thank you, Alan!
A very good video 📹 about the disused railways 🛤
Another fascinating episode in this ongoing series.
I live, in small dole but love to see this history about wherevi live
A great and well put together series. It was great to see Bob Howick in the first episode, he thinks he is famous now and expects us to want his autograph. 😂🤣
Bob is a legend!
@@stephencranford1102, Lovely man as well. 😃
A very interesting well presented and different approach to this fascinating subject which many do get so wrong
Thank you very much 😊
Where you were at St Botolph's by the Downslink intersection were two railway cottages, long demolished. My mum lived with her parents at one of the cottages during WW2, her dad being a platelayer. Mum used to walk up the line to go shopping at Bramber. During WW2 grandad built an air raid shelter out of sleepers in the garden there.
Thank you for sharing your memories. We discovered that several old properties were demolished in Botolph's.
Such lovely memories from Ann. It was wonderful that she agreed to voice the memories herself.❤
There was also a station further down called Bungalow town which re opened as Shoreham Airport
In episode 1, we featured bungalow Town. Take a look, there's a small segment about it. 😊 Thank you for watching!
Remember us driving over the Shoreham toll bridge in 1957 whilst on holiday in Bramber. Sometimes we avoided it (and the toll) by going round the back lanes via Sompting (St Mary's).
A less known local route @batman51, we use that backroad all the time ourselves to avoid the road closures! Lou, Producer
@@loupartridge4803 But probably not in a 1937 Austin 10!
@@batman51 No, not that lucky but still a beautiful route in a Nissan Micra with the windows open!
Great to meet Bob at the premieres of episodes 1 and 2, really interesting chap.
Henfield Museum, well worth a visit.
Loving these Sidings episodes !
Magic, wonderful museum at Henfield too.
A magnificent video so refreshing to see someone taking the time to fully investigate the abundant history of the railway bringing to life the day to day running of the line, its trains, stations, people and services provided at that time. One wonders what the Steyning Line would be like today had they not closed it especially now with traffic jams on Britain’s roads. Thank you so much for a truly amazing series and looking forward to seeing part 3 (already viewed parts 1 & 2).
That's very kind, thank you, Peter. We are delighted that you like the programme. We are already well underway with episode 3.
Excellent production. Really well put together. Good to hear from the ex Shoreham B bobby. I have worked in both Lancing and Billingshurst boxes. The railway was certainly more varied and interesting then.
I used to be a member of the now long gone Brighton railway museum, and before we had the pullman shed at Preston park the old line to the cement works was looked at ,we also saved the 2 Ruston diesel loco shunters at the cement works at the cement works named Shoreham and Steyning after the line.
Hi, how good to hear from you. What happened to the Ruston Shunters after the Brighton Railway Museum closed? This is great intel - thank you. Do you have any photo's from your days at the museum? - Chris - Director
@@tracingtherails Hi Chris, sadly both shunters were scrapped, but a lot of other stuff was saved like the 2 Brighton Belle pullman cars and the old Victorian Pullman car Balmoral, and yes have some photos somewhere and will find them. But love your videos, very good and interesting, keep up the good work ,all the best ,Ian
Would you be interested in doing a video on the history of the pullman works at Preston Park ( Brighton) and the former railway museum? As I am in contact with a few other old members and it's history plus the building needs to be told and as it was the main pullman car works in the uk Would interested a lot of people.
Two episodes in, and this has to be the most thorough and well produced historical record of the old Steyning line. Seriously can't wait for the next episode now, thank you so much Stephen, Mike and everyone for bringing this subject to life in the best way possible 🙂
Thankyou very much for your lovely comment @AndyCreepy27. We are so pleased you enjoyed it. onwards to Episode 3..........! Lou, Producer
Went on a school trip to the cement works when it was operating and can remember seeing wagons in the sidings .
How lucky and cool that must have been. Did you take any photo's at all? Thanks for commenting - Chris
This is fantastic. I’ve ridden the Downs Link and never get bored of being out in the country imagining being aboard a steam train! I love the attention to detail and superimposing the tracks etc so we can see clearly where the railway and the buildings were. Can’t wait for the next episode, this is better than any railway mainstream programme on tv. Congratulations 🥳
That's very kind of you, Tony. Thanks for your lovely comments. Please subscribe so you will get notified when the next episode is ready!
Loved this. The most comprehensive video of an old railway I have ever seen! Love old railways, the research here is second to none. And the presentation is as good as it gets. Excellent production, well done all!
Thank you for your kind comments
I was born in Shoreham by sea and as a child spent a couple of years in a wheelchair. If my brother ,Brian, was pushing me ,he used to wait until the signal box man was turning the wheel and starting to close the gates before pushing me through! the ever narrowing gates. I would be screaming and the man in the box shouting at my brother through the window who was laughing! Happy days! when I was 11, I had to got o high school in Worthing and used that under pass everyday
I am so flattered that our work has brought back some good memories. Thank you for sharing them. We love these stories. - Chris - Director
U & yesterday as has been previously mentioned in your comments should be biting your hand off to bring your production and standards to the main media, because if they don’t somebody else will.
Thank you. Please message them and suggest us!!
Absolutely brilliant video. Here's to the next episode!
Thank you @terenceholloway1632, we're already out filming Episode Three! Lou, Producer
Loved this. I was a Shoreham by sea Guide in the 1950's and we used to have weekend camps at Bramber in the land behind the station.. The large house was where the district commissioner lived and it was her land .We used to play in the castle moat and visit Pottters' museum. Great memories
Great memories @dianeruff, what a wonderful place to visit as a child. Or adult even! We loved filming in Bramber! Lou, Producer.
Great, fantastic way of presenting a railways history. I hope this is the frst of many . If you can please do the Lowestoft to South Town route.
This is brilliant. Thanks Stephen. I'm really enjoying this.
Thank you @allananscombe1337!
This is incredible u can feel the line comes alive again with your presentation look forward to the next eps !!
Thank you @MrMansun95, we are so pleased you enjoyed it! Lou
Wow !! so much to like in this episode , those great clips of now and then, the ticket stories but most of all the beatiful way its crafted together with Stephens immaculate diction, lots to learn and some new things i have never seen before .Good to see that people and companies are happy to give you access i always wondered what the inside of the cement works was like ,finally Do you need a stunt double Stephen ? im standing by !!
Aw, thank you so much for your lovely comments. We have been so grateful to the companies who have given us access to their sites . Thank you too for comments on my voice. That speech and drama training and over 20 years at the BBC has moulded my voice !
As I was born in Shoreham and lived there until the 70s I remember the railway from Shoreham to Steyning and onwards with affection. However in your fantastic programme you called it the Steyning Flyer. As a child it was always known as the Steyning Stinker, mainly because it was never the cleanest of engines and seemed to emit enormous amounts if black sooty deposits which covered your clothes if you got too close. The romanticism of steam railways was not always as lovely as some enthusiasts dream. Great programmes, keep doing them.
This brilliantly shows how railway is much more than just a collection of rails. I doubt roads will be seen the same way in the future
So interesting, particularly as I travelled this line several times as a young lad when we visited family who lived near Guildford. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thank you for your kind comments. 😊
Well i thought part 1 was great but this has surpassed even that. Having met Stephen and his crew at the missing bridge whilst cycling down from Henfield( even got a photo with him!) I have been waiting patiently for this and it certainly doesn't disappoint, Incredibly detailed ,I have learned so much so far.. Roll on part 3.
Thank you, David. It was lovely to meet you on location, and now you can see how that fitted in to the story. Please find our Tracing the Rails Facebook page, and send us the photo!!
