Social lives of Antarctica - Teaser
Little teaser of the full video about McMurdo Station, Antarctica. I spent some time down there as a large vehicle operator, and tried to film as much about everyday life as well as the magic of being there through that time. I interviewed people, filmed wildlife, and watched the operations take place. Tune in for the full video coming soon.

This port in Antarctica, is made of sea ice (McMurdo Ice Pier)
มุมมอง 775วันที่ผ่านมา
Everything at McMurdo Station is unique based on the fact of how remote and inhospitable the place is. And the port is no different, every 3-5 years a new ice pier is constructed to help with offload and docking of cargo ships, ice breakers, and more. Here at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Emperor Penguins didn't make an appearance until my last month at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. They don't normally spend much time near this region, but we were lucky enough to see them. Thumbnail Photo By: hikingwithhersh @aidanalfonso

At what temperature do they ground the planes?
Thanks for sharing your experience with observing Adelie penguins! The trip-and-fall part was funny LOL. And the clip of the ice breaker looked really cool too - were those seals along the ice in that clip? I didn't know that sightings of them are more common around McMurdo when the ice starts melting along the Ross Sea. Is it because they breed along rocky coasts around this time? And do you know where they go when they're not around? I wonder if they commonly enter the station grounds if they're not very afraid of humans - have you seen them around? Nice video!
Hey Aidan, been enjoying or having nightmares from your take on life at Mcmurdo, I was there with you as part of the GUSTO crew. definitely an experience i will never forget.....rations sucked
1st! Can't wait!!!
About to head down there with NCHB1 to offload. Excited to visit and work
Long Putt! The legend continues.
Hilarious btw!
What a great video Aidan! Keep up the great work!
If you’re over the age of 77 then you most definitely have dealt with rationing.
But despite of that there seems to be a quite relaxed and convenient atmosphere in the bars. I am surprised, that there meet such a lot of people in the bars at night.
Yes you can but it has to be between you and the person you are selling your ration
So can you sell your rations if you don’t drink?
I would say the black market on that base is fairly well established....
You’re supposed to do that. Then get in a sauna to warm up
That was actually really Cool. Congratulations on your Polar plunge. Not many people can say that they did a Real Polar Plunge.
Never have i heard weddell seals sound so bad before.
I was Heo set for the 16th Had some set backs But I’m still hopeful I’ll be out there soon
Watching this reminded me of Pykrete. Essentially mixing sawdust into ice. During Ww2 they were experimenting with using it to make a massive aircraft carrier. I wonder if they have ever experimented with pykrete in Antarctica?
Weddle seals 🦭 😭
they are the cutest beans!! thank you for sharing these awesome shots
Atomic bombs are the cutest beans, you heard it here first! 😂
Definitely some cool creatures to watch!
Pretty cool I just got off the ice 1.5 mouth ago . I did summer and then I winter over at McMurdo I was there for 10mths it was a great time there at McMurdo Station
Very nice! Definitely an experience hahaha
A guy I know from my small town in Florida is there this year making the traverse, his name is Daniel. I have to say that is a pretty cool gig that he applied for and he’s doing. He’s gone have some good stories because we are not used to anything he’s dealing with right now. Haha
Traverse is probably the coolest thing you can do in Antarctica. Seriously.
There are some good examples for fresh water production and other infrastructure topics in Antarctica on: brr.fyi
But this can only be done by stations nearby the sea. How do they get their water at AS South Pole Station? I assume, by melting ice.
I think melting ice would be the only option there.
We should not be in dubai for the same exact reason
Your not wrong!
Is the diesel shipment cheaper than shipping water ?
I don't know for sure. But it must be.
Can you not just melt the ice
This how I assume they get potable water at inland stations.
Diesel-ination?
Could a well be drilled and would it actually have fresh water? In a drilled well, could the soil filter out the salt in the water?
The problem would be maintenance. Imagine having to make sure that the well doesn't freeze or the machine doesn't need a repair during the -35°
If I knew the answer I would give it. At a loss.
😍
🙂
I just got back from Antarctica i was deployed to McMurdo Station i was there for 10 months and now im going to the South Pole in January 16th 2025 for the winter ill be there for 10 months I'm so excited
Very cool, definitely will be interesting!
Have u got to play with any skyice yet?
Do you mean Fata Morgana?
@aidanalfonso nope, fanta morgana is when stuff looks like its hoovering over the water at distance....skyice is actual ice but instead of white or clear ots a vivid blue color from deep deep down below the other ice
@TampasHotwheels ahhh definitely haven't seen this yet.
Is this the large passenger vehicle operator position for amentum?
Yes, this is it 👌
I submitted an application this weekend. It is my second attempt to apply for a position at McMurdo with them. Any advice?
@@joey2577 I would say just apply between Feb and June each year. Most likely this season is probably filled unless someone leaves or gets injured. I was hired the third time I applied. Just getting medically qualified takes at least a month, and they only hire passenger vehicle operators for the summer season oct-feb.

It's all about the pit-vipers.......😎
Your not wrong 😆
the round spinny windows are high tech window wipers. they shed the water by spinning constantly at high speed and you can always look outside
Ahhh for sure. Knew it was something that stayed clear, just didn't know the exact reason 👌
hello Aidan! Many typos and mistakes in the subtitles(the one imbedded in the video) (boat are now birds, etc). Have you use AI to generate them? Very interesting content! Thank you for the video.
Yeah it was automatically added, definitely had a few typos. Thanks 🙏
I am a plank owner on this ship from 1976 to 1980 first crew on this ship. I made the first two trips to Antarctica. The ship looks a lot nicer now than it did back then. We didn’t have satellite communications and nice uniforms. I hate to see it being mothballed like the Polar Sea.😢
Damn. That had to be crazy coming into McMurdo at that time with the polar star. Definitely is still doing the job 👌
Our son is headed McMurdo with a Basler from Boreck ( an Engineer). He is over at A.L.E now but plans change daily. Lol
Flights in antarctica is constantly delayed hahaha
They installed it only some years ago. In former times a similar, may be smaller, installation was (is?) on Black Island. Do you know, why they choose Black Island for this first, instead of building them on Arrival High from beginning? Because it is much more "unconvenient", running them from Black Island. Is the internet provided via that dongles? Do people at McMurdo have access to the internet VIA HANDY, but only via laptop. Because I heard, that at Scott Base, they have access via handy, but I do not know if this is true.
Oooooof these are a lot questions I don't know the answer to. I think you may know more than I 😆
This is so cool! Just subscribed
I have seen many large antennas, but this thing is fast!
Fr
Quite funny that there are signs for truck and van parking "in the middle of nowhere" (probably on Ross or McMurdo shelf ice).
Tons of traffic hahaha
This is really cool thanks for showing this to me. Do you work at a site? If so please do a a day in my life or just how it is working there.
I worked there last summer season, so I am no longer there.
clickbait title. why do they travel?
What is this for? Studying the rocks after you blow them open?
They actually use the rocks for building materials for things like roads.
🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
Cool
It would be good to see a video about all the wildlife near the station, and not just above the ice either.. Great video again...
I would film underwater if I could, but I like the idea of all the wildlife near station. Might be able to make that happen 👌
Great videos. As I watched the video a C-17 flew overhead on its way to Antarctica. Port hills Christchurch.
Thank you 🙏 I'm sure you see a lot the planes heading down that way.
