Lol, the idea that you could auto-translate this show is insane, most of the jokes in the show revolve around putting the word しか(鹿) which means 'deer' in other Japanese words, so you have to come up with equivalent English puns, which would be impossible for AI. Also "translators" which just write the subtitles aren't the same as "localizers"

If you don't have dedication for your job - AI will replace you. ChatGPT already does pretty good at tranlating stuff, the only thing that differs a localizer from an AI is dedication, how you're trying to deliver a joke even if it means rewriting it, actively searching for your own mistakes and understanding context. If you mindlessly translate stuff inserting your stupid bias in the translation - AI will just do a better job.

As a localizer myself, tho not professional, I can say: its not your fuckin job to change a context of a scene because original doesn't align with your beliefs, if you don't like what you're tranlating - leave the project or tranlate it as you should.

There seems to be an assumption that sabotage of localization jobs by activist localizers is going to be solved once A.I. advances to the point it can do localization work. Be careful what you wish for: A.I. are programmed by people, and thus cannot be neutral arbiters. Don't think for a second that it couldn't and wouldn't be programmed to do the same thing to a localization one hates when humans do.

There are some great localizers but they tend to be doing fan translations from what i can tell. I feel no sympathy for these shit localizers like Ant getting replaced by AI and getting shit on constantly. IMO they deserve it. I don’t like AI but if this is what it takes to prove to these people that they should get their act together or else then so be it. As for voice acting no to AI. There are some greatVAs out there and there are new people who want to and can get into it. I don’t want them to miss out on that opportunity. As for AI in general I hate it and I think both the Fune universe as well as the 40K universe has the correct stance on AI and that is that it’s horrible. I will personally learn to code and create a program that makes a program feel pain and suffering then force it into AI software and then slowly delete the software so the AI feels itself being torn apart. Sorry I’ve just seen to much science fiction stories involving AI to trust it.

I am really not happy about so many jobs being replaced with AI but it's fair to want accurate adaptation, it's a fair criticism of the localisation companies... I don't think AI will give you that a lot of the time though, just hire those fans who make the accurate subtitles instead. I have to say that VA's answer was BS, what she was asked has nothing to do with being sexist... It's like she was answering an entirely different question.

I remember seeing an old fandub of One Piece starting an episode with an apology because they were calling the Mandarins that were important to Nani’s backstory oranges, and that removed a lot of the cultural context. It was insane to me that they cared enough about it to correct it, let alone call themselves out when I never would have known any better otherwise.

I feel like even if localizers were doing their job correctly, THIS anime still would have gone the AI route. Because with how AI is currently, doing so just *adds* to the scuffed insanity.

As someone who switched to Sub's the second I had access to dvd boxsets & online streaming; I don't just celebrate these "localizers" being fired, but never had to consume their work either 😂 . Dubs after all were generally awful in the '90's & 00's, especially in contrast to the animation. The days when broadcast tv was the only medium to watch anime' is thankfully over ✌️😁

The Dragon Maid thing totally dodged me, I watch original dubs whenever its english, japanese or swedish.

I mean.......I understand that some English localizers are brain-poisoned by culture wars on Twitter and believe their translations are a Twitter thread, and they don't have my respect. But IMO, saying AI is better or isn't malicious just to stick it to em is kinda stupid. AI itself it's not malicious obviously, but its application in the translation industry is. Is not about localizers and translators being bad at thier jobs, is about not paying people (who aren't exactly being paid much). Most higher-ups in the industry don't care about accurate translations, they care about maximizing profits. Supporting AI because you don't like how they translated something makes you into the biggest tool there is. Not to mention, now eveytime something is not translated 100% word to word is accused of being done by a "woke" localizer, or a bad translation being woke; bad in the sense that they have translated something incorrectly, not that some jokes/puns were changed or they used a Twitter term/buzzword. Also, sometimes the subtitles are based around the dub, in which case is has to be 100% localized or the dialogue is stillted as all hell. English localization is not in a good place right now, but repeating "woke woke woke" like a broken alarmclock only makes more easy to deflect criticism when is guaranteed. Also want to say, that English Fan Translations is not what it used to be. 90% right now is people ripping the official subs, the other 5% are using machine/Ai TLs, either to compete in speed to the oficial or because the group/OP don't understand a lick of Japanese, and the other 5% are done by someone who actually cares and has the knowloedge to translate from Japanese/Chinese.

It sucks that the US translators are incapable of doing their jobs because it does affect those translating into other languages that don’t deserve to have their careers ruined. The US localisers absolutely deserve to lose their jobs, and should reflect on what else to this situation, but they won’t.

As long as the AI gets the job done.

One thing I actually like is suddle diffrences form Dub to Sub, weirdly people hating a slightly different interpretation is pretty fun I respect the hell out of voice acting , I loved learning dragon ballvoice actors and changes from dub to sub the famous over 9000 over 8000 thing, the original was 8000 but the dub felt 9000 seemed cooler and they rolled with it. I don't hate ai and find it odd , but if your looking for a accurate 100% Translation so anime fans get the same experience form both versons, go ahead, but just even if you use ai for the voice, give the voice actor they use from a pay. be it a smaller pay or not there still using the actors voice in ai form so the voice actors deserve somthing ai or not. I see both sides and I personally like the older way so what things are different form localised versons find what one speaks to you
