2026 Income Tax Increase
Back in 2017, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act brought significant tax reductions, but they're set to expire at the end of 2025. That's right around the corner, folks. Despite all the talk, the law of the land states that tax rates will revert to 2017 levels unless Congress acts fast, which, let's face it, is unlikely. Join Hans Scheil and Tom Griffith as they break down the current tax brackets, explore potential strategies, and shed light on how these changes could impact your financial future. From Roth conversions to estate planning, we've got you covered.

    Kudos for discussing the fact that the bracket Income Thresholds get inflation adjusted each year, and that when we return to the 2017 Percentage Brackets, the threshold borders won't be exactly as they stood in 2017. I watch a LOT of financial YT channels and it amazes me that no one else discusses this. Well done!

    Changing rates does not definitely mean a higher tax bill. Many people were hurt by the increase in the std deduction and the elimination of the personal exemption in 2017. While some will see higher taxes if there are no changes in 2026, some people’s tax bill will decline.

    Great video for tax planning. I have been maximizing my Roth conversion since I retired and will through 2025. Another consideration besides the higher rates is that the high standard deduction will get reset and many will have to start itemizing again. If you are mortgage free, and live in a tax free state, you will likely see your taxable income increase due to the lower standard deduction.

    • @EdNichols-qj4xk
      @EdNichols-qj4xk ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed, this is something that I think will affect the amount of taxes more so than the actual tax rate increase. Most retirees don’t have still a mortgage therefore very little deductions to help reduce taxes.

    I have a question. I am a teacher with a pension and social security. I retired Friday at 62. I am not getting Soc Sec yet but will next month. I have over 127K left in two 403b accounts. I am single and have thought about converting it to a Roth but I am not sure it would make that much difference for me. I have CDs well over $175K now and savings of $72K. Would you suggest combining the $127K 403b into an IRA or Roth conversion? I live in FL so only federal tax. Thanks.

    • @CardinalAdvisors
      @CardinalAdvisors 7 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Rodney. Not knowing the size of your pension and Social Security check? Most likely, you will not pay a lot of income tax. So Roth conversion, all at once, would cause your taxes to go way up. A possible alternative is purchasing an income annuity with the $127k that will pay a monthly income for life? Thank you for teaching kids all your life. I won’t charge you if you want some advice over the phone. Hans

    I think the videos you guys produce are fantastic. I haven't watched all the annuity videos, but it is a topic I am interested in. I am not a professional, so I used chatGPT to help me. I put in the numbers for the SPIA (55013.2) for 60 payments of 1000 and asked it to compute the IRR. The calculation came to 3.52%. I think every annuity video should talk about IRR, what it is, and why it is important to evaluating an annuity. There are other considerations, but paying money today for fixed payments for a fixed time period in the future produces an IRR that you can then use to see if it is of value or not. So in this specific case in your video, I ask myself, why when I can get 5% in my money market per year would I put it in this annuity and make only 3.52%? I don't think I would? But my point is not to say this is a good or bad investment for people, but to say that if you really wanted to educate people on annuities, you could talk about the importance of IRR so they don't get swindled. In this case, if I were asked the question, I would answer yes, you can get 5% this year, but if rates get cut you may not be able to in the future. Thanks though for all the great videos!

    So using the income tax brackets in your examples, can you back out any qualified dividends (taxed at 15%) from the income to determine the amount of a Roth conversion you may want to make up to $191,950 (single)? For example, say a single filer has $200,000 in taxable income, but $40,000 of that income is from qualified dividends . . . the Roth conversion one should consider is $31,000, right? Does that make sense (given Roth conversions make sense in this scenario)?
