10 things you NEED to know | Moving to Amsterdam

I had a few people reach out to me on Instagram after my last video, asking some really practical questions about my move from Melbourne to Amsterdam. I thought I'd collate it into one video - of course, I've only lived here three weeks, so I'm sure I still have a lot to learn! I'm also from Melbourne and thinking of doing the same thing. Amsterdam or Berlin next year. Work in Marketing Automation and thinking of applying for jobs towards the end of the year. Was wondering how was the visa/sponsorship process or do you have an EU passport?

    Omg please continue! Im moving to Utrecht before the fall for school. I’m definitely nervous but it’s nice to hear from other people who have already made the jump because it definitely makes it seem less nerve wracking.

    Hey Rosalind, thanks for sharing your experience 💛I’m also an Australian who moved to Amsterdam at the end of 2020 and I really related to many parts of your experience (incl. not dealing with cockroaches 😅). Hope you continue to share your journey + good luck with figuring out how to get your music recording off the ground!

    Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!

    Which country are you a citizen of? I'm so jealous of EU citizens. I would've loved to just work casually or part time but unfortunately I have to work full time for anyone to be interested in sponsoring me- I hope one day I can live in the Netherlands but at this point it's not possible because long term I need to be an EU citizen so I have to live somewhere that will allow dual citizenship (i.e. I will naturalise) by then I will probably be too settled to move. I hope to visit Amsterdam a lot since I will be in Europe at least- take advantage of the cycling for me, it's my favourite mode of transport.

    Amsterdam is not the Netherlands so just remember that. Amsterdam is often considered a dump by plenty of Dutch who live outside the city. I avoid it like the plague.

    I'm 26 turning 27 just moved from Sydney- was looking in Amsterdam and pretty much got a job but then I got an offer in Belgium which I went with for a bunch of reasons but still got Amsterdam in my heart- definitely will be catching the train up there! Hope we both have an awesome experience. Always scary to take a leap but also always worth it for new experiences.

    Great vlog! We've been seriously considering moving to Amsterdam from Canada in the next couple of years. It's our favourite city in the entire world, something about it, maybe because we got engaged there in 2019. So this was a nice little sneak preview of what that new feeling's like. Super brave of you, and I'm sure you're fitting in just fine! The Dutch are super friendly folks. We're actually flying to Amsterdam in a couple of days, really hoping the weather is going to cooperate!

    April and may are fantatic months to travel especially in southern Europe where the clime is warm and not yet very hot lie in summer time. Making even just week end trips form Amsterdam to Spain, Portugal, Italy or Greece should be easy and not that expensive.

    • @pietdegeling4696

      I am curious, why is amsterdam not a nice place to be?

    • @hendman4083
      @hendman4083 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pietdegeling4696 Tourists mostly I think. Amsterdam used to be overrun by tourists coming there over the weekend to get high and drunk. Since covid, when tourism stopped pretty much, even the people in Amsterdam and the city realised how much of a nuisance these type of tourists are, and steps are being considerd to try to keep these tourists out, and instead focus on a more 'mature' type of tourist, who stay longer to enjoy and get to know dutch culture a bit more. One part of this culture worth mentioning, is that people living in Amsterdam are considered arrrogant by the rest of the Dutch. While Amsterdammers boast about how great their city is, the rest thinks it is overcrowded, too expensive, and has the worst bike infrastructure in The Netherlands. 😂

    Hi, I'm a rando on the internet who did the reverse; Netherlands to Straya. If you're having problems getting into the Amsterdam music scene consider looking at Den Haag (The Hague). It's famous for it's artists. Rotterdam is good for electronic music.

    Hi Rosalind. You seem to be brave to leave your comfortzone and move to the other side of the world and I wish you well, but you made me laugh at the beginning. Showed us your Museumcard, then went to Lidl, as if you need a Museumcard to visit a super market. Edit: 3:40 'I just lose all sense of where I am'. Yep, I had that impression right away ;-)) Welcome to my country, enjoy your culture shock. Aussies and Dutchies get along very well, I'm sure you will make new friends soon and in a few months you will be alright. B.t.w. I subscribed 'cause I'm curious how you're doing in this sometimes 'weird' country. Maybe I'll comment or advice on future videos.

    Love to see you picked up biking, try Dutch snacks and probably learn Dutch fairly quickly. Get used to cold weather, our summer is probably as warm as your winter. But I prefer it that way, if it is cold, just put on some additional cloth. I got that you like music and want to start recording, did not yet work out though if you do that professionally or if you have a job in a different field. Maybe I can figure that out in one of the next videos. Amsterdam is beautiful, so I get you like the city. But try and make trips outside of Amsterdam, explore the country to get a feel of the Netherlands. Amsterdam is a bit different from other places in the Netherlands, so to get the whole experience take the train and travel a bit. I enjoyed the few videos you already posted, keep it up. Erik
