Sharing my sewing stories and bits of my life with you.
Hello fellow sewers!
I have been sewing consistently since 2020. While I benefit from learning extensively from other sewing talents from paid and free tutorials, I also just attempt many projects, make a lot of mistakes, and improve steadily that way!
"You have to make a lot of bad art before good art happens."
I feel comfortable attempting patterns labeled "confident beginner" and "intermediate" even though the things I make don't always turn out. But it helps to remind ourselves that in mastering any skill, there's always that hidden creative process where "ugly" and "bad art" happens. Learning from mistakes and persisting in making are the only way to get better.
A couple of people who inspire me to creative work (or any work at all, really) are:
Theodore Roosevelt: "Believe you can and you're halfway there."
Austin Kleon, author of "Steal Like an Artist," "Show Your Work," and "Keep Going."

A Mini but Mighty Backpack - A Great Beginner's Backpack!
Want to try your hand at sewing a proper backpack like I have for a while? This is a wonderful entry project into the world of backpacks! Even though there are many components and steps, the sewing is fairly straight-forward and simple. And don't be fooled by its "mini" status; it's actually much more spacious than it looks.
*Get your pattern at noodle-head.com/products/making-backpack-pdf-pattern (she has an Etsy presence as well). For the price of one, you get both the large and the mini pattern! What a deal!!
What I've learned and/or done differently:
🧵Interfacing I've used in this project includes: Pellon SF101 (woven interfacing), Pellon 808 or 809 (the ones I fused onto the main panels only for added sturdiness), and Pellon Matte Vinyl Fuse (the vinyl that I added to all exterior pieces).
🧵Add or subtract interfacing, stabilizer, or any finish according to your chosen material. For example, you can safely omit woven interfacing when you use faux leather, vinyl, oil cloth, heavy-duty canvas, etc...
🧵I dyed the webbing and zippers to match the fabric. The color turned out lighter than expected but it still worked.
🧵The lining I used is a failed curtain project I dyed and made years ago. I was so glad I could finally re-purpose it!
🧵The binding tape was made with the same curtain fabric.
🧵I hand-stitched a leather tag for the first time in this project!
🧵Rivets are more fun than functional in this backpack but they definitely elevate!

Sturdy Gusseted Tote with Exterior Pockets - No Hardware!
มุมมอง 1.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The meaty and sturdy feel of this tote comes from its foam interfacing, making it a slightly more heavy-duty bag than most market tote bags. It also features a gusset, giving it structure and ample room inside. Its curvy contour is a drastic departure from the standard rectangular look, making it a fun and rewarding project all the way around. Last but not least, this is a free pattern from Swo...
Easy Market Tote with Strong Sewn-in-Seam Straps and Boxed Corners
มุมมอง 6647 หลายเดือนก่อน
You can call this Easy Market Tote the "landscape" version of the previous Simplest Tote th-cam.com/video/oHOr2t-fXKM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=skhIonwNYBykqgUq but we are one-upping the difficulty level by adding a couple of very long straps sewn from cotton fabric. I arrived at the length of 56" x 6" wide because I like to sew the raw edge of the strap into the bottom seam of the bag for a sturdier bag. ...
Simplest Tote with French Seams
มุมมอง 1.7K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
This tote couldn't get any simpler: all you need for materials are 2 fat quarters and 2 pieces of webbing for straps. Since there are some variations in sizing with fat quarters, you can just trim the pieces down to even sizes without sticking to a specific size. If you don't have webbing on hand, you can sew the straps from scrap fabric. You can choose to make the straps wider for comfort. If ...
Crossbody Tote Bag with Adjustable Strap - Free Pattern
มุมมอง 2579 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is one of my favorite crossbody bags because the construction is simple and very forgiving. I sewed one a couple of years ago using only cotton fabric and it feels like a favorite shirt or sweater that I just layer on top of my clothes. It's instantly at home with whatever I'm wearing. This time I thought I'd changed it up a bit by adding the faux leather contrast. Mistakes were made but l...

Easy Peasy Tool Roll

I love this tool roll because it is a deeply satisfying beginner friendly project and a highly customizable and functional piece. In this video, I used: - 2 pieces of coordinating fat quarters (18" x 22") - 1 piece of fusible fleece (e.g. Pellon 973) on the exterior fabric only (17" x 21") - 1" wide cotton webbing (32") - 1 shop tag (optional) The most important step is to square up the two pie...

Drawstring Bag - Fully Lined with Boxed Bottom
มุมมอง 1.4Kปีที่แล้ว
Learn to sew a fully lined drawstring bag! It's actually not that much harder than sewing a unlined one. Also, with lining in place, we don't have to worry about finishing the raw edges because all of that messiness will be hidden inside, between the exterior fabric and the lining fabric. It makes a much sturdier and polished-looking bag! Nothing spells "handmade with love" much faster than a h...

When you add the bias tape, the video shows you pinning it open on one side and then sewing, but the next scene shows the bias tape fully attached. Did you anchor it on one side, then fold it around and topstitch it again? I rarely work with bias tape, apologies if this is a very obvious point.
Yes, that's exactly you would do! You pin the bias tape down, sew all around to secure it, then fold over, and top stitch to finish. So, you would've sewn the bias tape twice using this method. I believe some people fold, pin, and sew once for all but I don't have that kind of precision to do that! 😅 Have fun!! 😊
Thank you very much. I'm making a travel jewelry case, not a bible cover, but I'm using your basic construction method. This video has been very helpful.
@@sarahmckenna8906 Very nice!

Awesomeness!
This bag is so cute! Great job with the video! 👏
Thank you so much!
Guess. Who's. Back! ♥
Yay!!
Wonderful tote bag in a great video. Good to see a new one.
I totally needed this today ❤
I have same bible and I’ve been looking to make a cover for it!! Thanks for the video ☺️
Can I use cork/vinyl snd skip binding either raw edge?
Go for it! Cork and vinyl don't typically fray so they should work without binding. I learn that some people like to use a product called Edge Kote to finish cork edges. I have used Mod Podge to finished faux leather with great result.
Actually I was interested in the dimensions of the cover v. The dimensions of the Bible. For instance, how many additional inches did you leave for the top and sides, taking into consideration a 1/4” seam?
I measured my Bible and added 1/4" to every edge.
This project is beautiful! I love the fabric and handle!
very good
I did buy the pattern but the zipper on the outside is vertical on pattern and on this one it’s horizontal…. How do the measurements change because I think it’s better horizontal. Should say my daughter bought the pattern for me 😊
I followed the instructions in the pattern on pp. 20-21 (for cover C) except that I cut 1.75" from the edge of the Outer Pocket for the zipper. ☺
Gorgeous Bible coverI shall try to make one
Do you have a link for the pattern?
I was wondering the same thiing
Just bought my first sewing machine… this will be my first project for Myyy TX sized Bible 😊 🤟🏼 I definitely need to add some cardboard tho 👍🏼
Hi,I need the measurements of the laptop bag please.it’s so creative work 😊
Hi, thanks for the kind words! You can purchase this pattern from the desinger: sallietomato.com/collections/pdf-download/products/morning-post-pattern-instant-download (I am not an affiliate of this company and receive no commission from your purchase.) Happy sewing! 😊
Beautiful!!!!! You have a great talent!!!! Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much 😊
I love it and I wish I could make one but since I am not an expert or at least good sewing I wish measurements and slower details were given, I am a senior and I was trying to follow the video but it was to fast for me to learn the steps. It is a beautiful a great job!!
Hi!! Thanks for the kind words. Since I did not write this pattern, I cannot give measurements away. But you can purchase the pattern from the link I put in the video description (By the way, I do not earn any commission if you buy from that link). As to the speed of the video, you can slow it down by clicking on the gear icon in the video, select playback speed, then adjust the speed to your liking. You can also pause whenever it is going too fast for you. I hope this helps and I hope you get to make the bible cover to your liking!
You should try making makeup bags or pencil bags to start of with, I did and learned so much with zipper part and now I feel like I can move up to a new level
Thank you for the video - helpful! What interfacing did you use?
Hi, my go-to is Pellon SF 101. Thanks for watching!
@@VirginiaSews I got the pattern and was helped by seeing your video - my bible cover came out GREAT!!
Congratulations on your new bible cover!! I'm so happy for you! Enjoy it and praise the Lord! 💓💓💓
Beautiful "market tote"!
Awww... thank you! 😄
What a monstrous tote! I'm glad you showed exactly what to do with the cut outs for the boxed corners (4:37) when you were sewing up the sides!
I'm glad it's helpful! 💕😊
Wow, I really like the porcelian-like orange fabric! Good job on the bag! 🍊
Thanks! I love that fabric too!! 💕😊
Le quedó precioso.
Thank you so much!! 💕😊
Hi, thank you for the great video! I have a question. What happens between the shot at 7:34 and the shot at 7:35? I can make mine look like the 7:34 shot, but I don't know how to get to the 7:35 shot. I have a mess of waded up material on both ends of the hole and yours looks so neat at 7:35. How did you get there? I don't want to trim anything I'm not supposed to. The pattern does not call for that. Thank you again!
Hi! You can watch this bit on my other video explaining that process: th-cam.com/video/A6ZRwvs7RPY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Z2FgKLx75XAPxJR8&t=90. Feel free to slow the video down to 0.25 speed. I hope that helps! Much success on your project!
