Hey 👋 My name is Mark Benliyan and within 18 months of writing my first line of code I did 6 Software Engineering internships (Figma, Netflix, NASA JPL, Tinder, Clever, BitGo). I've interviewed with and gotten offers from nearly all major tech companies. I've been flown out to programs by Jane Street, D.E. Shaw, Salesforce, and even Harvard Business School. I've also been a part of multiple Venture Capital fellowships, most notably being a Kleiner Perkins fellow and a Neo Scholar finalist. My goal with this channel is to teach you everything I've learned and help you land your dream software engineering job. Welcome aboard!

Really Helpful Man! Thanks a lot!!
What a great video! Thank you, Mark!
Hi there! It's a nice video! May I know what font you used there? Tysm!
So sad. I got 390 on the test cases for Netflix and couldn’t get my other code to run the cases 🥹crying
woww just what i needed
This is a great video. However, I would suggest that new graduates who are going for competitive SWE roles also do the Leetcode Hard problems. Though these are less commonly asked, they definitely build that next-level problem-solving ability.
Hi - just came across your channel. This video and others you made are great and quite valuable. Thanks a lot! Keep it up and hope to see you become one of the top channels soon. I also had two questions from this video if you don't mind... 1) is there any way for me to take a General Coding Assessment and actually send that somehow TO companies or is the only way to take these assessments if a company sends them to ME? 2) I recently took a CodeSignal assessment for InstaCart. It seemed to be company-specific and it wasn't the standard 4 questions, but more so like the type where there is an existing codebase and you build on top of that by implementing certain parts of it. I got a score of 400/600. Would you say that's good/ok/bad?
Only if you don't have a CS bachelor's, or you want "to get paid more money" by law they technically have to, but not by much
Simple answer no. If you can't get a job with associate. What make you think you're going to get a job with BA or MA degree.
The issue is that I would much rather get a job than get a masters but no one wants to hire me (as an international)
Same question I had after I graduated. Took a phd instead lol.
Thanks for making a video!
This came at the perfect time! 😍
With easy apply, you can apply to over 20 jobs a day and easily reach 700 in like a month or so.
Can someone please explain "recruiting season" in current terms (It's June 2024 right now)
Hey Abdul - I'd be happy to! Could you elaborate on what you mean though? Are you asking if the timing of the season has shifted, or something else?
very useful! thank you!
Do you think you've had enough success to be making this kind of content? You've never worked somewhere longer than a few months
Yes and no! My thinking on this just boils down to I believe we're all credible to speak on our own experiences . My goal on this channel is to help others by early-career folks getting into software engineering by sharing what's worked for me. I do this because it's what I wish I had when I was first starting out. On your point though, I say yes because if someone is trying to replicate my results (mostly CS students) then it'll hopefully be valuable to them. I also say no though, because I in no way think I'm qualified to give advice to every person out there. For example, if someone is trying to land their next senior or staff engineering gig, I don't have much to say to them since, like you mentioned, most of my experience has been internships while in school up until now. I think we can all only speak to our own experiences and what's worked for us. I also think this holds regardless of how successful one is :) Thanks for checking out the video regardless!
What you were saying about scores might have been true a while ago, but right now unless you get perfect score they wont invite you to the next round. I got 750, 820, 770 last year and did not get invited to the next round. And those weren’t auto OAs, for one of them recruiter reached out to me before I even applied. Same for my friends who even got 830+
Great video!
this is cool
Underrated video, Mark... Not only did you change my perception on how important resumes truly are, you provided the roadmap on how to make a good resume in a simple, yet impactful manner!
Could you please make a video on how to find fall and spring internships please
Hello Mark, you have been doing a great job making contents and posts that's really helpful for students to find internships and jobs. We really appriciate that. I have been trying to find the best way to contact you to ask what would be the best way to know if we can apply for a Full-time position if we are graduating in December, 2024. I see you have been sharing a lot of job post for new grads, are those for students who will graduate in Fall too or just the one who graduate in Springs. If possible, can you please mention about the intakes too. This will really help a lot.

Mark thanks for this wonderful episode, and right now am so desperately looking for an internship and luckily enough just last week I got one, but even after passing all my interviews, got the job offer, even added to the company internal tools but at the last minute things hasn't went right during my onboarding session and I technically lost it.
lot of appreciation to you brother thank you for knowledge
Thanks for sharing the episode, Mark! It was a great conversation, and I'm happy you could join us as a guest.
Thank you for sharing this. I really really think these perspectives and stories are important. I work with too many engineers that just started young, and was surrounded by tech to a degree that it was an obvious choice for them. My path wasn't typical, and it was hard, and neither was yours and I love that you shared the story. Thank you
I totally agree! Appreciate you sharing your own journey as well Cody
Great story man, you didn't even start with CS major and yet you rocked recruiting and got the best internships and programs.
thank you bro!
How do we prepare for the DSA for interviews. My resume now seems to be getting me in the door but the technical interviews is holding me back with having to deal with certain DSA questions im unsure off.
amazing video, Shout out from colorstack
I enjoy hackerrank but codesignal is so cool. Will you please make a video on how best to grasp DSAs and how to prepare?
I enjoy hackerrank but codesignal is so cool. Will you please make a video on how best to grasp DSAs and how to prepare?
Hey Mark, great vid again! As a sophomore, I would request that you make a video on a guide through understanding DSA as it is kind of complimentary to these coding assesments/interviews. Also a side question I had was regarding the template of the resume you showed on your previous video, as I really liked the layout and was wondering if it was on overleaf or some other resource. Thank you again for all of your LinkedIn announcements as well!
What's your favorite online assessment platform?
I do believe this is overall a good video. However, I don’t understand the strict commitment to a short time limit for practicing problems. A lot of the best don’t do that. Being stuck and thinking through it strengthens your problem-solving skills. Similar to the gym, if you’re not being challenged you’re not growing. It seems to me the real thing to aim for when solving a problem is serious and conscious effort. Solving a problem involves checking through multiple avenues and can justifiably take more than 10 minutes. On the other hand, the real vice to avoid is self-deception. For a lot of people, they (unintentionally) don’t put in much effort into doing a problem because they know they’re going to look at the solution at a specific time.
Hey Justin! Thanks for the comment and taking your time to watch the video :) I can totally get where you're coming from. For me personally, the shorter time limit for each problem was an optimization that ensured I keep going instead of getting too burnt out by a couple problems. When I'd look at the solutions, I'd still take time to thoroughly understand the solution (usually by walking through iterations on paper). That did enough for me to actually learn even if I didn't crack the solution myself on the first go. Over a longer time horizon, this helped me get a ton more problems under my belt that I actually understood and translated well to interview performance. To be totally fair though, this is just what's worked for me. Can't guarantee it'll be right for everyone, but it's what I'd do the next time I'm interview prepping!
@@markbenliyan - Thanks for the thoughtful response. I really enjoy your videos!
@@justinhenry5772 That means a ton haha thanks Justin!
Straight value. Thanks
Imagine calling out resumes for looking sloppy when "formating errors" is on the screen.
🤣🤣🤣 solid catch btw not sure how serious you were but my goal here isn't to be calling anyone out! This is just me sharing what's worked for me and common gotchas I've come across. I don't think I'm some resume guru lol
Love your video. Will share with my software engineering students. One tip I usually add is to position Projects before Experience on the resume if the student has no related SWE experience.
What camera do you use?
Make video on all big tech compnay salary compensation?
Very helpful Mark jan. Thank you🤝🏻
Thanks for watching 🤝
fire bro!
Appreciate you!
Great callouts, especially for newer folks. You can cut up the first couple of bullets for your "intro to typography" channel, lol. Remember that the second person who reads a resume is usually the Hiring Manager, after your resume has passed the recruiter screen. They are typically going to read just the first couple of most recent bullets, so invest heavily in those, taking your advice on business value. Don't give in to a simple chronological ordering here---put the highest impact things first. Education and skills should only be at the top for junior folks. People reading experienced candidates' resumes go straight to experience. Nobody cares that I graduated from college w/ a CS degree over 20 years ago :) PS This is an interesting new, "Light Mode" version of your videos :)
Great call outs for things like educations & skills being at the top for junior folks. A big asterisk to these videos is that they're targeting students / junior folks as those are the only ones I can speak to from my personal experience. So cool that you noticed the "light mode"! Do you prefer it over Dark?
@@markbenliyan Target audience: yes makes sense. Keep making content for those folks 🌱🔜🌳. Honestly I prefer the dark mode, although the light mode is also high quality. I think the contrast between you and the background in dark mode makes you stand out more and the lighting is more dramatic on your face. I'm no cinematographer though, I'm struggling with lighting on my own channel... 🔦
Hi there, first one to comment. I like your content and as someone who is struggling to pass resume screenings, I am making mistakes you mentioned.
Thanks for watching! Hope fixing those mistakes help out
any links or resource to the resume templates? thanks lots
I've been using a software called Overleaf for building my resumes. It has a bit of a learning curve at first, but these are the links to the templates I recommend on there 1. www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/jakes-resume/syzfjbzwjncs 2. www.overleaf.com/latex/templates/awesome-cv/dfnvtnhzhhbm (I use a modified version of this) Anything similar to these simple styles on your resume platform of choice would do!

A common and easy addition to uplevel your answer is to add one more R: Reflection, what you took away from the experience. That or it’s just the talk like a pirate day version of behavioral interviews (STARR)…
