Best rod I own! I call it my first "real" fishing rod! Like you said, it's a great rod for beginners especially if you want to learn how to use a spinning real. Casts far for a spinner and it's super durable. Very comfy handle. I'll definitely be buying more Shakespeare rods and reals in my future.

We fish the West Arm. Last time we caught 40 fish - every one in the stupid slot size. Wonder why they're not getting any bigger. Hope they change the slot size soon...

I found this combo for $17 USD at Walmart. It's proven itself against large channel catfish, common carp, and bass with braided 30 lb test and the appropriate hooks. Everyone wants to say bad things about the reel, but honestly it's pretty amazing at the price point. If you don't like the reel, get something better to go along with a virtually indestructible rod. I'm thoroughly convinced that the people who break these things are either a victim of mass production/shipping, or their own negligence.

i got the 7 ft UL spinning combo about 1 1/2 years ago . the reel was a total POS , but the rod has done me well . i put a diawa 2500 on it with 20 lb braid and i go back and forth between 6 and 12 lb leaders . i've even caught 10+ lb carp on it . 2 thumbs up on the rod . thanks for sharing your results . .
