Hessian accent
The accent and dialect spoken in the area of Frankfurt am Main, Darmstadt and Wiesbaden is called Hessian, though it would be more precise to call it South Hessian. You can also hear it in neighbouring regions along the Main and Rhine rivers for example in Mainz or Aschaffenburg, even though these cities are situated in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria respectively. Its characteristics are: soft consonants, frequent use of diphthongs, and a very ubiquitous /æ/ sound.

Swiss accent
Swiss German is the thickest of all dialects of the German language and even native speakers of German have trouble understanding it. In the German speaking part of Switzerland it is spoken throughout all regions and all social spheres, even in TV interviews and when talking to your boss. Fun fact: When somebody speaks Swiss German on German TV, Germans need subtitles to understand what is bein...
English - it's vs its

Can you tell which of the following sentences are correct and which aren't? It's two o'clock. The cat has a collar around its neck. The dog eat's its food. The kid's think that its great. The it's are alright Show me your its! Itsburgh / Pennsylvania Everybody should wo...
A pile of human bones
In Oppenheim in Rhenish Hesse in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate you can find one of the largest ossuaries in all of Germany. St. Michael's Chapel (Michaelskapelle) hosts the bones of 20,000 people who died here between 1400 and 1750. It stands in the churchyard of St. Catherine's Church (Katharinenkirche) and the bones are visible through the gate. The painting at 1:39 is a tryptich by Hans ...
Bavarian accent
Bavaria is probably the most famous of all the German regions. The Bavarian accent and dialect are considered cultural assets and whereas in most parts of Germany accents and dialects are associated with a lack of cultivation, in Bavaria it is much more socially accepted to have an accent, even in a business context. This is how a Bavarian accent from Upper Bavaria would sound in English, it is...
Darmstadt is a city in southwest Germany. With its four universities it is famous for sciences and popular with students, and it has got nice places like the Ludwigshöhe, Mathildenhöhe or the Großer Woog, a lake in the city centre. The only strange thing about it: its name. Darmstadt literally means Bowel City. How could that happen? What is the history of that name? Unique Places in Germany In...
The old town that is two years old - New Frankfurt Old Town
The area between the Cathedral (Dom or Kaiserdom) and Römerberg square in Frankfurt's historic city center ("Altstadt") used to be the oldest part of the city until it was destroyed in World War II. A small part of this Old Town was reconstructed (kind of...) and opened to the public in 2018. This is the "New Frankfurt Old Town" or Dom-Römer Project with 35 new buildings, some of which are reco...

My dad's ancestors came from, he said, "Hesse Darmstadt." He was way too busy to learn anything about family history, so that's where it ended. People in my generation, however, made connections -- Facebook is amazing -- with relatives in Reichelsheim, a bit to the southeast of Darmstadt. When my ancestors came to this country, they changed Boehm or Böhm to Bame; Americans can't pronounce an umlaut. Like another commenter here, my Lutheran ancestors came to this country looking for religious freedom, and they all settled, after a famous "shipwreck," in the town of Jenera, Ohio -- so named because the guy who scouted out the land was a Dr. Jenner. The big Lutheran church they built is still the connecting point of the community.

Where <kk> is the swissest of all sounds. Standard german with swiss accent can be difficult to understand. The video does an excellent job in showing this, well done 👏! Swiss dialects however are on a completely different level. I hope the example above illustrates this for non-german speakers.

The same text w/o sound shifts: Last-a-day, I have been a-bit-ly hungry, therefore I have wanted go-n a kabap go get. It-has been to-evening, about-n eight-ei. But where-I have come out-my house out, I have seen it-has an accident been. And a car has in-thunder-ear-ed in-n-a bus been. And the bus conductor has been under shock. He has at-peeking at-me been, like... totally in-a daze. And then my next door neighbour, the Mr Spät-ly, he has come running out-his hause out. And the first-thing wher-he has done been at-yelling at-the-bus conductor: "Hey what the f*uck are marking there? Can not park-eare there, this is a private ground!" Such an a*hole, the Mr Spät-ly. But really: straight in-front of-my house! But luckily nobody has been really injured. And later-n we have-n out-found had, that the-whole thing has been recorded on-an camera, because the Mr Spät-ly the, has CCTV.
