The other side of the High Street, down to where Worcester Road Starts - 1943 and earlier.

As with the other side of the High Street, I've put together the stitched pictures without all my arrows to tell you what is there now. There are some additional pictures at the end of this video that show some of the premises close to where Worcester Road starts.
1943 High Street, Bromsgrove - without markings showing todays shops.

I have put together the whole of the one side of the High Street, in succession, without my arrows and notes for what is there now.
A wander along the High Street - 1943 - Part 7 - New Road to Worcester Road.

A really short one this time. Seems the guy who was doing the photos may have gotten mistaken about where the High Street ended and Worcester Road (then Worcester Street) started as there are no photos of what is now Urban Angel, the space that is now A Plan Insurance and Flavours Indian Restuarant.

Continuing a wander along the High Street. This video takes us from Lloyds Bank at Chapel Street to New Road. This has been quite a challenge as there are large swathes of premises that have been replaced with 'new' builds and nothing remaining from 1943, so once I had started with Lloyds Bank and the timber framed building next to it, I only got so far, before I had to start at New Road and wo...

Continuing my piecing together pictures taken in 1943, I continue from the area of where Argos now stands, down to the small shopping area this is now Chapel Street, next to Lloyds Bank. Due to the nature in which the images were taken, they are lining up somewhat different to the other side of the High Street - it's fried my head putting them together as I'd got in a rhythm for the other side ...

Only a short one this time, between the Post Office and the top of the road. More demolished buildings are to be seen again, with one picture from 1943 missing.
A wander along the High Street - 1943 - Part 3 - From Church Street to the Old Post Office.

We start where we left off in Part 2, the junction of the High Street at Church Street. We travel past Mill Lane, with a lot of buildings demolished in that area to widen Mill Lane, up to what is now the Old Post Office. I've managed to get a lot of shops in this one, but it gets a bit crowded with arrows and locations in the middle bit!
A short wander along High Street, Bromsgrove - Part 2 - 1943 - Poundland to Church Street.

Another short video shows stitched pictures taken in 1943. This one is a little shorter than the first and goes from Poundland which sits just off the junction with New Road up to Church Street. When I put this together, I was amazed at how many buildings were demolished to build where Poundland and Bodycare are now and I questioned if I was correct but HSBC Bank has been there since at least 1...
A wander along the High Street - 1943 - Part 1

Something a little different - I have stitched together the pictures taken in 1943 as a survey of Bromsgrove High Street. This video shows the beginning of the High Street, from St John Street to just past New Road. Other parts of the High Street will be completed soon. It has proved a challenge as the photos were taken from a side view so they get smaller as they lead off to the right. The per...

Not a lot to tell you about this building, nor the business that was there (unfortunately). It appears John B Wilson & Sons was well-established at the turn of the century, with a trade directory from 1879 showing the business on the High Street. By the mid-1940s it appears the shop was subject to a fire and the business traded from the Coach & Horses which was situated across the road. The sho...
The Roebuck Inn, High Street, Bromsgrove - now demolished.
มุมมอง 420ปีที่แล้ว
I tried to find more information about the Roe Buck Inn, such as when it was built and demolished, but there doesn't seem to be anything, other than what the photos tell us - that it was built sometime before 1900. It can be found in Ordnance Survey maps from 1883 The 1900 pictures show a lovely double-fronted building with six windows on the upper floor, but by the 1940's it had been reduced b...
Ye Old Black Cross, Worcester Road, formally Worcester Street, Bromsgrove.
มุมมอง 357ปีที่แล้ว
This is a familiar sight for those of us who live in Bromsgrove. Ye Old Black Cross dates back to 1640 and has been linked to King Charles II, with a suggestion it is haunted by a Royalist soldier who is said to walk between the bar and lounge along a passageway. Other stories also suggest the kitchen to be haunted by a young girl who was said to have been murdered on the premises when the kitc...
The Merchants House, formerly at Worcester Street/Station Street - now at Avoncroft Museum
มุมมอง 617ปีที่แล้ว
This is the Merchants House, also called the Bromsgrove House or the Medieval Town House. It used to stand on the corner of what was then Worcester Street at its junction with Station Street. Worcester Street later became Worcester Road. It is believed it was built in the late 15th century and was just a single hall downstairs - it is now a Grade II listed building. It is the removal of The Mer...
The Old Hop Pole, formerly on the High Street, now on New Road, Bromsgrove.
มุมมอง 607ปีที่แล้ว
This is a brief visual history of a building which is classed as being 'Tudor' meaning it was built between 1485 and 1602. It was initially situated on the High Street in Bromsgrove, known as the Hop Pole Inn, but was demolished in about 1865 to create a 'new road' which was required to link the town to the new train station. If you follow New Road on Google maps, it does indeed go all the way ...

I wonder if the hallways up stairs all still creak when you walk along them? I don't recall stories of the ghost of the soldier but my mom reckoned she saw the woman when she used to live there.

I think my nan and granddad, Harold and Mary Pitcher used to run the Roebuck back in the 50s and 60s. When my mom and dad got married they moved in to live with them for a while before getting a house on Charford in the early 60s. Harold and Mary then went on to run the Black Cross. I have fond memories of the Black Cross. Sneaking into the 'Buffs' meeting room which was strictly out of bounds, followed by the sensation of a hot backside after being caught 'exploring'. Playing in the cellar. Feeding the chickens. I spent hours pumping the handle of the water pump which back then was situated outside. Despite everyone telling to give up and stop as it hadn't produced any water 'for donkey's years' i'd still go at it and once managed to get it to burp up something wet, that you wouldn't have wanted to put your finger in, let alone drink it! It was planned that when i was to start at Watt Close middle school in 1970 that i'd spend my lunch times eating at the pub but sadly that never happened due to Harold becoming ill not long before i was to change schools and they had to give up the pub. He passed away within a couple of years.

Thanks for your comment - it's all gone a little mad in a desire to build new homes, which I know are needed, but it appears they are planned with little thought. There are plans to put an island at the junction of Rock Hill & Fox Lane, and a few more houses on the land once occupied by The Greyhound. I have objected every step of the way - but everything falls on deaf ears!

Was the "butcher" formerly located in the vacant lot (now Cex) possibly Isaac Partridge, father of CE (Charlie) Partridge? I know Partridges had the original shop in the High Street before relocating to Stourbridge Road/Broad Street.

Sorry about a delay in response to your query. I'm afraid I don't know, as I've only been in Bromsgrove for about 10yrs, I'll do some digging and see if I can find out about the butchers.

Buildings renumbered, Worcester Street became Worcester Road, Guild Hill became Station Street (not Old Station Street, unless it referred to the Police Station in the Crescent) and Alcester Road (or Alcester Hill as Grandad called it) became Stratford Road. All very strange and confusing

Sad how many of these beloved buildings 'accidentally' catch fire. I see incidents like this regularly in Private Eye.
