My dog has separation anxiety... but is totally fine sleeping downstairs on her own, I teach her to be independent... not too affectionate. I try to quietly leave the house but she panics . Even if I am outside for 20 minutes!! I ignore her coming in, and ignore her going out. I do not give a treat unless it is ball return. We are calm.

This is a subject that highly interests me as I rescued a highly reactive dog ion July 2021.. Unfortunately, I could not hear you as the sounds was too light for me.

Are you still doing on line consults ? Have you heard of the condition the rescued dogs from the Amish / Mennonite puppy mills come on here in USA? We rescued one , I called him my Dunbass dog because his tail was plastered up under his belly . A year later he is better . He is a much more joyous dog . He still however has a built in systemic flight reaction even in the house , he won’t come to me on call in the house , he goes to his safe place and I put the lead on him there. He can take or leave treats . He has become very leash reactive on walks and I you present anything new ( pick up a piece of trash to carry , try a new lead ) , he goes into Dunbass mode ( tail tucked , wide eyes , won’t respond to touch or treats , he obeys but he is in a frozen fearful state . We have come so far with him . But are Stuck in this zone where he is bounding along in front of us basically taking US on walks … or frozen in fear heeling next to our legs not taking anything in . When he was the latter on walks early on we were thrilled the first time he sniffed something . Now he pulls us to sniff . Totally unbalanced . A firm voice results in him barking AT us .. which we KNOW is not good .

beautiful video! you are a lovely, gentle soul with buddy!! we just adopted a very timid, anxious, fearful shelter dog so going to use some of your methods. i thought you said you'd had buddy 4 years, but i hope i misunderstood AND that all these years later he is adopted and thriving!!! the stories are heart breaking!! ONE DAY, no more pain and sorrow for ALL GOD's creatures! ♥

Well done on using the training tools that are best for a dog's specific needs!!! How will you manage with the upcoming remote collar ban this Feb. 1st? I hope you find a way around this idiocy. ❤ It's sad when these "people" and their fallacious logic mentality, thought they had the best interest of dogs in mind are actually doing a great deal of harm long term.

Love this instructional video. I am fostering a 3 year old male very similar. He was 1 of 150 dogs rescued from hoarding. When I think he's conquered a milestone as using pads outside his crate he reverts back to relieving himself in his crate even when all doors are open. I am letting him take his time as he has almost conquered not defecating when i get too close to him. I struggle between letting him continue to decompress saying some cats dont ever go outside and gently getting him into a new comfort zone. Right now, i am simply getting him used to seeing a lead and re-associating his carrier.

I have a very fearful dog strait since May 9 months.he has no aggression but fearful of his own shadow, doorways. He has a trouble going from one room to another. He trying to do it it takes few attemps. Doggy door flap is a stigma too. We have to keep it up. Trying every technique in you tube. He also does not want to follow a command come in dog parks. I basically have to choose him , or trick him with a treat.

Hello Jo, thank you SO MUCH for all of your tips ! We jjust adopted a dog from Bosnia and it seems like it's going to be quite challenging. Your advice has helped us very much allready, thank you again!

I just adopted this type of dog. She's a small GDS, approximately 5 years old. At the shelter she found more comfort with people, then with other dogs. Yesterday was our first day, and over night, I believe she was up, and down, most of the night. Right now I'm just encouraging her to sleep. I didn't want to take her off property, but she isn't relieving herself, so short walk, and finally got her to go pee, but still no poop. Have tried to engage her to play with toys, but I guess she's not ready for that. This is the one and only shelter dog I've had. My first dog was 3 months old when I got him from a home based rescue. I have no idea how long it's going to take to get her to relax, and trust. Hoping that getting her on a routine, and just allowing her to stay resting with me is the right start.

I adopted a Malinois mix, he is so scared all the time. Thank you for sharing

What kind of collar and leash

Hi Jo, we have a 12 week Labrador. She barks when we separate her with a gate when we want to eat our dinner. It’s like she is frenzied by food and wants to eat ours after she has eaten her dinner. This has got worse in the last few days and the bark is high pitched and she is biting the gate.

Thank you for the advise. I just got a rescue dog who was abused. She doesn't bark. She had a mussel on her and a shock collar during her birth process in a puppy mill. I have had people tell me to be more firm with her and it just keeps her in her shell. I prefer to go a gentle approach. Thank you for making this video. It really affirmed my way of teaching.

Very helpful vid, thank you for sharing...I've also adopted a dog from abroad(it's only been a week...I haven't yet put a collar on her or a harness because she doesn't yet let me touch her(she cowers and/or runs away)...should I try to put the collar on her at least? Please help🙏

I have only just found this lady on You Tube, it is exactly the way I gently trained most of my nervous dogs over the years, she is so patient and loving towards her charges, and I would recommend her methods to many who are anxious or worried about their nervous dogs. ❤

Good information! And FYI: Never …EVER negatively correct your dog for not following your recall command. I made that mistake once. It took weeks to undo the adverse result.

I watched this video and then got some spirulina for my dogs. They couldn’t get enough of it. In the end I took the bowls away as I’m not sure if there is a limit to how much they should have. Can they just eat as much as they want?

My dog has similar behaviour, fearful of the surroundings, little kids specially, absolutely not food motivated, constantly checking his back when we are walking, would hide in the woods and not coming out when strangers around. If I practice this exercise, how long would you suggest for each session and should I do after the walk or before the walk? Thank you

Really well explained. Thank you Jo. My dog barks a lot every time I take her to the vet or talk to people. She barks constantly. I took her to a day boarding kennel and on the first assessment day she failed as she barked most of the time she was there. The time she was in resting area she was calm but when she was out and about in the kennel she barked all the time. Please can you make a video and share how to manage such situation?

I just adopted a rescue dog and the shelter person who the dog was familiar with allowed her to put a collar and harness on her but the dog wouldn't be lead by the leash she was carried to our car and put inside. When we got home she would not get out of the car and growled and barked at us. After several hours of just sitting calmly with her we placed a crate into the car and coaxed her into the crate. We carried her into our house and opened the crate door and she hesitantly came out. She is now exploring the house with her leash still attached to her collar and growls at us if we try to remove the leash.At this point it looks like we will have to allow her to go to the bathroom in the house until she will allow us to lead her by the leash. She pulls very hard and I'm afraid she will slip out of her collar and run away any suggestions?
