I spent a lot of time walking around the beautiful city of Baguio City, Philippines. Sometimes I would clock in 20,000 steps per day or roughly 10 miles or 16km. The aquatic river shoe, Merrell Hydro Moc, seemed like a good alternative to the very common Crocs. Though are they really??? A more in depth review will be coming out soon. What it's like to be a "Boondock Earth Pilot" in the Philippines!

Driving around the island of Luzon, the mountainous region of Northern Philippines inspired me to come up with the term "Boondock Earth Pilot." I feel that term is a great way to describe how my life feels like in the Baguio City Area as a Filipino American who has the privilege of taking road trips. Some of the locations (or surrounding/nearby areas) and roads featured in this video are... Hal...

Samsung Galaxy A52 4K Video Example with Zoom Shots | Burnham Park, Baguio City, Philippines
Yo John thanks for the info, was wondering if you ever figured out how to mitigate the mold issues? Thank you for your videos sir!
True. Baguio is a walkable place. Less then 10,000 step from Burnham Park to Mansion House.
No..Baguio didn’t get its name from tagalog. It’s the moss!
Time to go home! The Philippines is already overpopulated. We don’t need more foreigners here!
Wat the heck he's local here / he just lived in abroad probably but...
I am home. Well I have like two home countries for now, maybe I’ll add more in the future. This is my territory, I was born in Baguio I lived in California and I have the right to go almost wherever on Earth I want. Back off. Funny comment tho so i guess I’ll leave it up lol. No wonder TH-cam held this comment for review or something.
What the indeed. Tho hey I guess “hate” or “trolls” still help drive engagement numbers (hopefully more people curious about PH see this video) so I’ll leave the comment and responses up for now. 😂
@ Who says you have the right to live anyplace you want to on this planet? Don’t act so entitled. You’re nobody special!
@LantangKaturay the basic reality that I’m human. Maybe you’re an AI troll bot, I don’t even know at this point. I’m not any one special. You’re certainly not either, I’m sure you would never say these things to me in public like in Malcom Square in front of many other Filipinos and my fellow Igorots and foreigners. You have absolutely no right what so ever to tell me where to go especially if you’re an AI bot or a racist Filipino telling foreigners to leave my country. Man you might now even be a real person. If you keep leaving hostile low key racist comments I will report you whether you’re a robot or a racist English speaking Filipino.
Awesome thank you, ne interesting to know condo prices and and association dues
Thanks! Filipino condos can certainly be far cheaper than the ones in USA. I don’t have the numbers on top of my head for that info. Though there are many options in Baguio to look at for housing, and they seem to be building a lot of new fancy residential places. I encourage you to take a tour near the downtown area, maybe ask for info in SM where they’ve have pop up real estate related booths, or check out the big residential buildings near Baguio Country Club. Enjoy Baguio.
Wal-mart should be here in the city and those high-end products....❤
Maybe one day? Hehe
Mold isn't an issue if the place you live at or build is properly done. We've had a house there since 1979 and mold hasn't wrecked havoc with it. A lot of people build incorrectly there ( A lot of locals built the houses themselves) or build houses without proper insulation and weather proofing for their walls and roofs. We finally had to repaint and weather proof our roof (we do this every 10 years) once again and it had no mold growth on it. Our walls are cement and adobe stone and we still don't have mold growth on it after all these years.
Interesting! Thanks for the info! Indeed a lot of the locals build their houses in ways that Americans and other developed nations would constantly criticize, (my cousin kept complaining about lack of enforcing building codes when he visited the Philippines).
Do more research about the name Baguio
I shall try to talk about it in a future video maybe
6:12 Wrong, wrong, wrong. Baguio comes from Bag-iw, the Ibaloi word for moss. Coincidence lang na bagyo is tagalog for typhoon. Pano naman nangyayari that tagalogs will name a city in the highlands, takot nga silang umakyat dati dahil pupugutan sila ng ulo :)
Hmmm… I’ll try to consult my Ibaloi friends and the museums and the old English speaking Igorot uncles/aunties seguro
Madlaw ay IGOY !
HAHAHAHAHA
Wow thanks for the mold heads up. I’m in seattle we have probably so much mold here but never hear anyone talk about it. We just probably call it the flu when u get it.
Interesting, everyone handles mold/mildew differently I guess.
You ever see any snakes out there?
I personally haven’t seen a lot of snakes in the Baguio area, though I’ve certainly heard of them.
There are 2 seasons in Baguio. Rain or no rain. 😂
LOL when there is sun though it’s awesome
The leading cause of mold is a lack of air circulation with high moisture levels and warm temperatures. I have lived on the Oregon coast and in Montana, with elevations of 6800 feet (2.7 km). With the high elevation of Baquio, the chance of having mold is slim unless you keep the moisture level up in a closed area(bathroom) and no air circulation or bring damp clothes from the lower elevation that are very hot to a cooler elevation and not open the suitcase or place them in a closet right away.
Thanks for the comment. Oregon is amazing.
This Guy Spits the truth!
Thanks so much! I just uploaded another long form video after a long time haha.
Hello i have just bought them in cream color, ive heard that they're more durable than crocs, especially the merrell bloom hydro mocs. How are they right now? Are they still in good condition? Do you still use them?
Hey. They are dead and buried somewhere in my tools or something. I wish I bought crocs instead. The grip of the hydro mocs failed me miserably. I wouldn’t recommend them, at least not the old models like what I had I guess. Maybe they improved the new batches durability/grip? Though for around $40 and to be tripping on slippery ground was disappointing. Part of me wishes I bought cheap sticky slippers that the locals use instead. 😂
@@johnjimages dude its funny how you replied now after 7 months because i actually ended up buying the hydro mocs myself, and same as you, i actually dont use them anymore. the hydro mocs are not a good product, they have to be worn with socks or else they scratch my legs. i'm currently using ordinary flip flops right now, i might look into buying crocs as well
@theanimeboy9953 LOL I’m so sorry hahahaha. Time flew and city life is busy so for some reason this channel just got put on pause i guess. Though now im back! And I’ll be making more adventure type clothing content for the glorious aquatic boondock city land. I heard the igorots like the brand nanyang? It’s more expensive though more durable. I haven’t tried them myself tho.
One of most informative, balanced takes on living in Ppns of any TH-cam channel...very useful!
Thank you so much! Do you have other topics that you would like me to consider?
помоему это не твой размер (больше чем нужно)
Maybe, thought if they were tighter they would really annoy the back of my heel I think
I'm from Baguio, there are molds in some houses but not that much of a problem. Not all houses have mold in Baguio. Do not generalize not all houses have molds. I also want to correct you that Baguio is not in the boondocks. And please read on the history on how the name Baguio came about. Baguio doesn't mean storm! It means moss (bagiw In ibaloi).
I guess the word “boondocks” can be perceived differently by different people. I meant to use it to refer to the wonderful wild mountain feeling of the city, even though it has a lot of urban developments already. I’ll try to consult some of my Ibaloi friends more about bagiw.
It is interesting that mold would be so pervasive. Without your information I would have guess that mold would be more a problem in warmer areas of the Philippines. Thanks for the very well produced video.
Thanks for the kind words! Mold is certainly a problem in Baguio. I can’t speak much about the hotter lowlands though. Though the reality is many people have cool lives here I think and they figure out how to deal with the mold, constant cleaning, dehumidifiers, sunshine and wind etc. I encourage you to explore Baguio and La Union (the lowland or hot area next to it) more to see and compare for yourself. 😁
Thank you for the insight about the mold. I thought about it, but I've never heard anyone mention that. I was planning to eventually retire in Baguio due to the cooler climate. Now I have something new to take into consideration.
Baguio is an amazing place. I strongly recommend you explore it more and see for yourself. 😁
Background music ruined the video for me.
Agreed. Too loud and distracting.
Thanks for the feedback. Check my new video, that one may be better to listen to.
My new long form video does not have overly distracting background music, check it out!
Great video!
Thanks! What things do you want to see, especially since you’re a photo trekker?
All factors considered - and - ''in the greater scheme of (all) things'' - it has come down to my considering Tagaytay - or - 'perhaps' - even Lipa City ? -- At 2000 feet and 1000 feet elevation respectively - likely giving Tagaytay the edge for overall 'comfort' ? Although Lipa likely is a bit cheaper. Average utilities costs nearly twice as much in Baguio than in Tagaytay ! Perhaps more AC is needed in Lipa than Tagaytay - also costing more - and likely helping to offset other higher costs of being in Tagaytay. -?- Seems likely to me if you value your 'comfort' at all ?!? - - - Near Tagaytay - w/o a killer view - might save a good bit on rent. Starbucks & McDonalds (24/7) have terrific views - which are invisible to me when I'm sleeping anyway !?! 😂❤👍🙏🌞✨
I’d be really interested if you make a TH-cam video on that! I didn’t know that even the McDo had a killer view in Tagaytay hahahah.
Having lived in the US, can you suggest tips on how you could best address the mold issue? Thank you
- Constant cleaning - open the windows to let fresh air through occasionally - dehumidifiers help, a foreign friend of mine I think had a massive dehumidifier machine shipped from Canada - let sunshine in rooms to help combat mold
@johnjimages Thank you.
Baguio is not a good place to live because they don't have a good hospital!
wrong. we have better healthcare in general here in the city compared to other places in the country.
It depends who you are.
S&R is Costco not SM :-) Keep working the craft and stay warm!!!!! Getting to Baguio was quite an adventure in 1997, the last time I went. Washed out single lane roads!!!!!
Baguio was a way different place 1997! I worked on the craft! Maybe you’ll see improvements on the latest talking head video I did. Single lane roads washed out sounds wild driving up!!!
The background noise is too loud and distracting 😅
Thanks for the feedback. My new video has better background noise I think. 😁
Hello John, I was born in Quezon City but like you, grew up in So Cal. I'm currently living in the East Cost and grew to like the cold. I'm also planning to return to PI to live permanently and currently doing some research. I have fond memories of Baguio as a child and considering it as my top choice to live. I'm looking forward to more videos and thanks for sharing.
Hello! Baguio is an epic place. I just posted a new video after not posting for a long time. Is there a certain topic you would like me to cover fellow Filipino Californian? Baguio is a great place to live if you’re coming from Cali because of the cold, I’m typing this in a fleece hoodie with the hood on in rainy season haha.
Hey John, it’s been since 73’ since we left the P.I. Still have relatives at Baguio and miss the beauty of the city. Might be a Expat from Nor Cal to Baguio to retire. We’ll see by 2024 where we’ll retire, Oregon or Baguio.. Thanks.
It’s 2024 now! Which one did you choose?
Ano pong year model yan colour na yan?
I think it’s the 2023/2024 algae model possibly
Thanks for the great content and advice for living in that area.
Thanks! If you have questions let me know, I might have answers. 😁
Maybe u got the wrong size that’s why the heel is slipping?
тоже так думаю
Maybe, though I think a lot of people have heel issues with this shoe
Could you have picked worse audio tracks for the background? Holy F... I will never subscribe to this channel.
My new video probably has better audio. Maybe you’ll subscribe then? lol
I like your positivity 👍👍👍
I appreciate it. 😁😁
when you say its cold how cold is it usually?
Usually it can get cold enough to have a nice maybe spring/fall weight jacket around. It feels like around the 60’s F a lot of times though weather can change quickly in the mountains so I always have a jacket near me. Sometimes it can reach single digit Celsius. Which can mean around 48 F. Though you have to factor in the wind speed and rain which can make things a lot colder. To put in perspective, im typing this out right now in rainy season with a big fleece hoody on, with the hood on… I hope those viewpoints help.
Well done, thanks.
Thank you!
How are things there in the off season? I am interested in coming during USA summer. I have a place in Florida for winter here.
What do you mean off season? Like not holidays? If that's what you mean then its way better 😂 bec the traffic is not so bad.
The traffic in the low season for tourists is sometimes a night and day difference. Though of course in high tourist season there are many activities to do in Baguio!
I just bumped into your vlog here and it is unfortunate that you seem to attribute “mold” to Baguio. I was born and raised in this beautiful city and I was never aware of any “mold” problem. I suspect that you are mistaking “mold” for “mildew.” And this is not because you are in Baguio. I am not sure what places you visited that had mold occurrence, but it all depends on how a building/house us maintained. And you are wrong about the origin of “Baguio” is. It is explained somewhere here in the comments section by someone. Please check your facts first before sharing information with others especially when it comes to historical facts. And your reference to a “boondock” life is rather offensive. Baguio is a city and is not a remote rural area. Sorry.
Yeah I agree that "boondock" sounds offensive, but I doubt that John J will change or remove this word from the thumbnail.
Hi, thanks for your sharing your viewpoint. Igorotak ya, ket diay word “boondock” is one of my favorite words because it hints to the wonder that the mountains told to the world. Baguio (sorry if my history lesson on that word was way off) is one of the best cities I’ve ever lived in because it mixes urban and mountain feelings in such an interesting way. Igorot used to be considers offensive also, though with the massive cultural changes many things have changed! I’m so sorry, though I don’t agree with your mold comment. Though of course we will have our different viewpoints. I suggest you ask your Baguio friends/family about the mold/mildew problem. It’s in the comments also. I’ve been everywhere in these boondocks, the deepest parts of the city that tourists will probably never see and far out into remote lands beyond Baguio and the locals like it when I use that word. Though I guess it depends how you use it and who you say it to. 🤷♂️ Oh the word boondock is proudly displayed on some pick up trucks here. And I’m quite sure a significant number of those guys are adventurous Igorots like myself. Experience the amazingly positive cultural changes that have happened in our city. It’s amazing.
Igorotak. Boondock is proudly displayed on some trucks here. Please see the long comment I replied back to that one viewer. I think it will help clarify things. Visit Baguio and experience the massive cultural “renaissance” of the Igorots and the wonders of the boondocks. Hahahahahah can’t please everyone. 😂
Hi there, how are the floods in Baguio City
Uncommon to have flood in here but avoid "city camp" bec they can get flooded sometimes. That's the only area that gets flooded here bec our drainage is located there.
Hi, we have a lot of typhoons this November 2024. People definitely have to be careful with driving around Baguio and the surrounding area, especially near the vegetable dealing city next door in La Trinidad.
Anong american accent mo pinagsasasabe mo??? Sinong ginago mo???
Maybe I fooled many? Or can you please try to convince the Filipinos that I don’t have an accent lol.
What is the cost to live there? $2000 a month enough or will I need more?
Depends on your lifestyle and accomodation. rents here for a simple 2 bedroom apartment start at 6000 pesos. It cost higher if you rent in condominiums of course and if you rent a whole house. When it comes to food, highland vegetables are cheaper than in manila. Transpo is pretty cheap for foreigners too, even taxis and the best thing is that taxis here wont try to scam you. 😅.
It certainly depends on the lifestyle!
That is a lot of money for a normal Filipino per month. It really depends on what kind of lifestyle you want!
Did you buy a place in Baguio or renting?
My family has lands which makes life a lot more convenient. I’m not a licensed real estate agent though if you buy something in Baguio now or back then it will most likely increase in price significantly I think.
I visited baguio and loved up this summer. I love the temperature there, even if it rains. I checked out a few condos there looking to buy.
Baguio is amazing in summer. I hope you found something that works well.
hi, i'm from California and was wondering can you ride electric kick scooters in baguio or do u need a license?
Not sure about license. I think my friend used to ride one. I saw police/security ride around Burnham Park a few times? Not really sure if that’s really safe for foreigners though because Baguio has very cramp roads lots of times. A lot of people here use the moped/scooter type motorcycles.
Very informative video John, Thank You
Thank you so much! Let me know what other info you seek, I might have answers.
I was interested in the temperatures also and so I searched. To my surprise, the average monthly highs and lows run between 0-5 degrees F, usually 2-3, cooler than Medellin, Colombia. More rain at certain times of the year but from experience Medellin has fantastic weather and it seems like Baguio would be pleasant as well. Medellin is called the city of eternal spring and for a city in the Philippines Baguio might be close.
Thanks for the info! It might be close!
Hi John, Thanks for the info. Thinking about moving to the Philippines in a couple years . Baguio seems to be fantastic. And, how far is the nearest beach.
1.5 hours nearest beach La Union
It’s relatively near, about 1.5 hour or so and if you like challenging mountain drives it’s enjoyable driving towards the beach. Stay safe.
2 questions: Could you recommend a colder climate than Baguio...??? Could you recommend 3 equally cool climates as Baguio...??? Thx in Advance.
They say taytay rizal is as cold as baguio though its way smaller in area and i think its heavily cramped with businesses already so not much for residential but i could be wrong. As for colder, you can go further than baguio, and look for a olace to stay along the halsema highway. Sayangan atok is colder there all year round and you get to experience frost from time to time. Most places in benguet and mt province have colder temperature at night and morning and during rainy season, i still find it hot during the day but still not as hot as the lowlands.
That’s a great question. I think @learninghowto101 seems to have given a lot of info that will help.
What I would say is that Baguio and the surrounding cities/towns is probably one of the most relatively convenient cold places in Philippines. Especially because Baguio has big department stores. The colder places in PH might be quite farther away from the conveniences people might be used to if you’re coming from a place where you leave near big stores or well developed roads.
It's nice that the airport is open again but only for two flights per week and only to Cebu City.
I wish the airport there would improve haha.
